5 Getting Star ted This section explains how to connect audio/video components and speakers to the receiver , and how to connect the power supply . Before Installation General Precautions • Be sure your hands are dry . • T urn the power of f to all components.

8 Connecting Audio/V ideo Components Y ou can connect the following audio/video components to this recei ver . Refer also to the manuals supplied with your components.
9 CD player Cassette deck or MD recorder CD recorder Note: Y ou can connect either a cassette deck or an MD recorder to the T APE/MD jacks. When connecting an MD recorder to the T APE/MD jacks, change the source name to “ MD , ” which will be sho wn on the displa y when it is selected as the source.
10 V ideo component connections Use the cables with RCA pin plugs (not supplied). Connect the white plug to the audio left jack, the red plug to the audio right jack, and the yellow plug to the video jack.
11 TV and/or DBS tuner When connecting the TV to the AUDIO jacks (TV SOUND/DBS), DO NOT connect the TV ’ s video output to these video input jacks. VIDEO FRONT RIGHT LEFT DVD TV SOUND DBS OUT (REC) .

13 DVD DBS DIGITAL IN DIGITAL 3 (TV) DIGITAL 4 (CDR) DIGITAL 2 (CD) DIGITAL 1 (DVD) PCM/DOLBY DIGITAL /DTS DIGITAL OUT Digital Connections This receiv er is equipped with four DIGIT AL IN terminals — one digital coaxial terminal and three digital optical terminals — and one DIGIT AL OUT terminal.
14 5. Check if the drivers ar e correctly installed. 1. Open the Control Panel on your PC: Select [Start] = [Settings] = [Control Panel]. 2. Select [System], then [Device Mana ger] and click [Sound, video and game controllers] and [Uni versal serial bus controller].
15 Connecting the Power Cord Before plugging the receiv er into an A C outlet, make sure that all connections hav e been made. Plug the power cord into an A C outlet. K ee p the po wer cord away from the connecting cables and the antenna. The po wer cord may cause noise or screen interference.

17 Changing the source name When you ha ve connected an MD recorder to the T APE/MD jacks or a DBS tuner to the TV SOUND/DBS jacks on the r ear panel, change the source name which will be sho wn on the display . On the front panel ONLY: When changing the source name from “T APE” to “MD”: 1.
18 MASTER VOLUME Listening Only with Headphones Y ou can listen with the headphones without deactiv ating both pairs of speakers by connecting a pair of headphones to the PHONES jack on the front panel .
19 DGTL A UTO : Select this for the digital input mode. The receiv er automatically detects the incoming signals. The DGTL AUT O indicator lights up on the display , and the digital signal format indicators for the detected signals also light up. ANALOG : Select this for the analog input mode.
20 When the shut-off time comes: The recei ver turns off automatically . T o check or change the time remaining until the shut-off time: Press SLEEP once. The remaining time until the shut-off time a ppears in minutes. • T o change the shut-off time , press SLEEP re peatedly .
21 Basic Settings Some of the following settings are required after connecting and positioning your speakers while others will make operations easier . • When performing the basic settings, it is recommended to use the remote control so that you can show the on-screen display on the TV .
22 1 Setting the Speakers T o obtain the best possible surround sound from the Surround and DSP modes, you hav e to register the setting about the speaker arrangement after all connections are completed. 7 Subwoofer setting — SUBWOOFER [On-screen display] [Front panel] Select whether you hav e connected a subwoofer or not.
23 2 Selecting Channel Numbers to Reproduce Multi-channel Digital Software — EX/ES [On-screen display] [Front panel] Y ou can select 5.1-channel repr oduction or 6.1-channel reproduction when playing back multi-channel (more than 5.1-channel) digital software with setting the surround back speakers to “ LARGE ” or “ SMALL ” (see page 22).
24 4 Setting the Bass Sounds Y ou can adjust subwoofer and bass sounds precisely according to your preference. 7 Cr ossover fr equency — CROSSOVER [On-screen display] [Front panel] When you use a subwoofer , you can select the cutoff frequency for the small speakers used.

26 8 Memorizing the V olume Level for Each Sour ce — ONE TOUCH OPR (ONE TOUCH) [On-screen display] [Front panel] This unit memorizes some settings separately for each source (see page 20). In addition, you can store the volume le vel for each source with the other memorized settings.
27 MEMORY T uning into Stations Manually On the front panel: 1. Press FM/AM to select the band (FM or AM). The FM/AM lamp on the front panel b utton lights up. The last recei ved station of the selected band is tuned in. • Each time you press the button, the band alternates between FM and AM.

30 Setting Sound Y ou can select the following sound settings to your preference according to your listening conditions or sources. • Items shown in this section are the initial values when shipped from the factory . • The on-screen display will disappear if no operation is done for about 1 minute.
31 BASS BOOST SOUND 1 BOOST BASS Notes: • This function does not aff ect the sounds outputting from the surround speakers . • When Analog Direct is in use (see page 30), the Bass Boost function is canceled temporarily .
32 Using Sur r ound Modes and DSP Modes This unit activates a variety of Surround modes and DSP (Digital Signal Processor) modes. T o use Surround and DSP modes properly , speakers required for creating each Surround and DSP modes should be activated.
33 DTS Digital Sur round ** Used to reproduce multi-channel sound tracks of the software encoded with DTS Digital Surround ( ). DTS Digital Surround is a discrete 5.
34 ■ DSP Modes Reflections from behind Direct sounds All Channel Stereo mode (ALL STEREO) This mode can reproduce a larger stereo sound f ield using all the connected (and acti vated) speakers.
35 Available Surr ound and DSP Modes According to the Speaker Layouts A vailable Surround and DSP modes will v ary depending on how many speak ers are used with this receiver . Make sur e tha t y ou have set the speak er setting correctly (see page 22).

37 Using the DVD MUL TI Playback Mode This receiver provides the DVD MUL TI playback mode for reproducing the analog discrete output mode of the DVD player .
38 Adjusting Sound Y ou can adjust sound parameters to your preference after completing basic setting. • When performing the sound adjustments, it is recommended to use the TV screen so that you can show the on-screen display on the TV .
39 CONTROL DOWN UP 2. Press CONTR OL UP 5 or DO WN ∞ repeatedly to adjust the frequency le vel. The DIGIT AL EQ indicator lights up on the display . • The frequency le vel changes from – 8 dB to +8 dB in 2 dB steps. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to adjust the other frequency le vels.
40 Using the on-screen display (through the remote contr ol]: Adjustment is also possible without outputting the test tone. In this case, you can skip steps 2, 3 and 7 belo w . 1. Show LEVEL ADJUST menu (see page 38). 2. Press 5 or ∞ to m o ve to “ TEST T ONE.
41 5. Press SOUND again then r epeat steps 3 and 4 to adjust the other speakers output levels. 6. Press TEST again to stop the test tone. Notes: • If you ha ve selected “ NO ” or “ NONE ” for a speaker (see page 22), test tone does not come out of the corresponding speaker .
42 EFFECT LEVEL : (EFFECT) R OOM SIZE : (R OOMSIZE) LIVENESS : Adjust the D AP effect le vel. As the number increases, the D AP effect becomes stronger .
43 COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The COMPU LINK remote control system allows you to operate JVC’ s audio components through the remote sensor on the receiver .
44 TEXT COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The TEXT COMPU LINK remote control system has been developed to deal with the disc information recorded in the CD T ext * and MDs. Using these information in the discs, you can operate a CD player or MD recorder equipped with the TEXT COMPU LINK remote control system through the receiver .
45 1 Source name: CD or MD 2 Select or , then press SET to change the disc. 3 T rack numbers and track titles. • When y ou move to a track number, y ou can change the track information by pressing 2 or 3 . Each time you press the button, track inf ormation alternates between its track title and its performer .
46 Searching for a Disc (Only for the CD player) Search for a disc by its perfor mer: 1. Press TEXT DISPLA Y while “ CD ” is selected as the source. The Disc Information screen appears on the TV . 2. Press 5 or ∞ to mo ve to “ SEARCH, ” then press SET .
47 Entering the Disc Information For the CD Player with the disc memory function: Y ou can use the disc memory function through this receiver . The disc information (its performer , disc title, and music genre) of normal audio CDs will be stored into the memory built in the CD player .
48 For the MD r ecorder: Y ou can write the disc information (disc title and song titles) onto the disc. Y ou can only write the song title for the song currently selected.
49 A V COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The A V COMPU LINK remote control system allows you to operate JVC’ s video components (TV , VCR, and DVD player) through the receiver . This receiv er is equipped with the A V COMPU LINK-III, which adds a function to operate JVC’ s video components through the video components terminals.
50 One-T ouch DVD Play Simply by starting playback on the D VD player , you can enjoy the D VD playback without setting other switches manually . • When the D VD player is connected through the anal.
51 Operating JVC’ s Audio/V ideo Components Y ou can operate JVC ’ s audio and video components with this receiver ’ s remote control, since contr ol signals for JVC ’ s components are preset in the remote control.
52 CD player After pressing CD, you can perform the following operations on a CD player: 3 PLA Y : Start playing. 4 : Retur n to the beginning of the current (or previous) track. ¢ : Skip to the beginning of the next track. 7 STOP : Stop playing. 8 P AUSE : Pause playing.
53 Operating Video Components IMPORT ANT: T o operate JVC ’ s video components using this remote control: • Y ou need to connect JVC ’ s video components through the A V COMPU LINK jacks (see page 49) in addition to the connections using cables with RCA pin plugs (see pages 10 to 12).
