5 Bef ore operating this unit 1. Remo ve the battery compar tment cov er by pressing and sliding it out. 2. Insert two AA (R6- or UM-3)-size batteries into the batter y compartment. Carefully f ollow the polarity diagram (positive (+) and neg ative (–) symbols) inside the battery compartment.

9 Connecting other de vices A C outlet connection Y ou can connect the pow er cord from another audio device to the rear of this receiver . Since the A C outlets on the unit are a SWITCHED type outlet, you can use the Standby/On button to turn on/of f the pow er to both this receiver and the connected audio devices.

11 P ositioning speak er s Speaker placement plays an important role in the repr o- duction of Surround sound. The placement of the speak- ers varies depending on the size of the room and the w all co verings used in the room. The illustr ation shows an example of a lay out f or standard speaker placement.

13 Making antenna connections Please mak e sure that y ou f ollow the consider ations below reg arding the location. Keep the antenna aw ay from noise sources (neon signs, busy roads, etc.). It is dangerous to put the antenna close to po wer lines. Keep it w ell away from po wer lines, transf or mers , etc.

18 Selecting a sound source Assigning the dig ital input If another device is connected to the digital input jac k of the DTR-5.1, assign the digital input to D VD, CD, VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3, or T APE depending on the type of connected device. Follow the steps (1–4) belo w .

21 Using Listening Mode Listening Modes The DTR-5.1’s surr ound sound enables you to enjo y the presence of a mo vie theater or concert hall in your room. Bef ore using a listening mode, make sure the Speak er Setup parameters have been set (ref er to page 14).

31 Using the remote contr oller Overview When y ou use a remote controller , typically you press one of the MODE buttons that corresponds to the de vice you wish to control, then press the operation buttons. For example, if y ou wish to control the DTR-5.
