12 Hardwa re M aint enan ce Man ual: xSe ries 33 0 POST When you turn on the server , it performs a series of tests to check the operation of server components and some of the options installed in the server . Thi s series of tests is called the power-on self-test or POS T .

For instance, a short circuit can exist anywhere on any of the pow er distribution busses . Usua lly a short circuit will cause the power subsystem to shut down because of an over current condition.

T o avoid damage to a har d disk d rive, do n ot re move the drive fr o m the hot-swap bay until it has h ad time to spin dow n ( a ppr oximately 30 secon ds). Handle the drive carefully . 3. Before you replace a hot-swap d r ive, ma ke sure it is defective.

Installin g op t io n s 53 — The green light flashes slo wly (one flash per second) , the dri ve is being reb u il t . — The green light f lashes rapidly ( three flashes per second) , the controller is identifying the d rive. Memory Adding memory to the server is an easy way to impr ove system performance.

Install the DIMM in the connector . Attentio n: T o prevent damage to the DIMM connectors do no t force the memory module into th e conn ector .
Chapter 5. Installin g op t io n s 55 Micr op r ocessor The server comes with one or two m icropr ocessors installed on the system boar d. If you have two, or ha d one a nd yo u installed a seco nd micropr ocessor , the server can operate as a symmetric multipr ocessing (SMP) server .

Peel the plastic protectiv e strip off the bottom of the heat sink. Make sure the square of thermal material is sti ll on the bottom of the h eat sink.

When the primary link is restored to an operational state, the Ethernet traff ic switches back to the primary Ethernet controller .
Chapter 5. Installin g op t io n s 69 Note: IEEE 802.1p tagging increases the si ze of the packets it tags. Some h ubs and switches w ill not r ecognize the larger packets an d will drop them. Check your hub or switch documentation to see if they support 802.

Note: Operati onal notes: 1. Server 1 (usually th e server at the botto m of the rack) is the server to which you connect the C2T device br eak out cable.
