Memory The system board contains six 16 8-pin DI MM slots each supp orting 72- bit ECC (64-bit m ain mem or y plus ECC) reg istered SDRAM DIMMs (PC- 133 compatible ).

Configurati on Software and Ut ilities 53 When to Run the FRU/SDR Load Utility You should ru n the FRU/S DR Load Utili ty each tim e you upgrade or rep lace the hardw are in your server, excluding add-in boards, hard dr ives, and RAM . For exam ple, when you upg rade your processor or add a se cond power module t o the 1+1 po wer supply.

A command line function m ay consist of two param eters; for example: cfg filename.cfg . Any inv alid parameter s result in d isplaying an erro r messag e and exiting the p rogram .

56 xSeries 343 Har dware Mainte nance Manual Clean ing Up and Ex itin g If an update wa s successful ly perform ed, the utility dis plays an appro priate m essage and then ex its with a DOS exit c ode of zero. If the utility fails, i t imm ediately exits with an error m essage and a non-z ero DOS exit code.

Upgrading t he Hardware 63 Replacing Power Supply Modules To replace a power supply module, follow this procedure: 1. Depress the locking tab (A in Figure 11). 2. Rotate the ha ndle downward (B in Fig ure 11). 3. Using the handle, pull the power supply outward (C in Fig ure 11).

T he serv er board has 6 DI MM slots and suppo rts up to 6 GB err or checking and correcting (EC C) SDRAM m emory.
Upgrading t he Hardware 71 Removing a nd Installing Memory The server boa rd supports o nly PC133-com pliant SDRAM. Install from 128 MB to 6 GB of registere d memory , using up to six s ingle- or double- banked DI MMs. DIMMs m ust be installed i n pairs in the fol lowing order: 1A-1B, 2A- 2B, and 3A-3B as shown in Figure 16.

74 xSeries 343 Har dware Mainte nance Manual 5. Using Fig ure 18 as a guide, align the corne r mark on th e process or with the corn er mark on the socket and insert the proces sor into t he socket. Lower the locking bar completely and verify that it ha s fully latch ed.
Upgrading t he Hardware 75 6. Align the processor and hea tsink (D in Figure 19) so that the raised are as can make full contact when assembled (the blad es of the heatsink should poi nt toward the fans). 7. Place the heats ink (B in Figure 19) on top of the processor (A in Figure 19 ).

78 xSeries 343 Har dware Mainte nance Manual Replaci ng 3.3 Volt and 5 Volt PCI Add- in Cards The server supports two typ es of PCI riser boards: 3.3 Volt and 5 Volt. The riser boards m ay be installed as two 3.3 Volt, or one 3.3 Volt and one 5 V ol t.
Upgrading t he Hardware 79 PCI Add-in Card Ca ble Installatio n It m a y be dif ficult to ins tall a cable o n the connec tor of a PC I add-in card c onfigured at locat ion A in Figure 24 due to inter ference from t he power s upply.
80 xSeries 343 Har dware Mainte nance Manual Statement 2 CAUTION When replacing the lithiu m battery, use only IBM Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalen t type battery reco mmended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium b attery, repla ce it only wi th the same module t ype made by the sam e manufactu rer.

83 6 Upgrading the Chassis Replac ing the Server Board To rem ove the server boa rd, follow t his procedu re: 1. Remo ve th e top co ver . 2. Rem o ve the fa n bracket. 3. Remove any PCI cards that m a y be installed in a 3.3 Volt or 5 Volt riser boards and place them on a clean, st atic-free surfa ce.

Lift the se rver board o ut of the chas sis and place on a c lean, static- free surface. 9. Repeat this procedur e in reverse to install the serv er board.
Upgrading t he Chassis 85 Replaci ng the CD-ROM and Floppy Disk Drives At te nti on: T he cable can easi ly be damag ed if not handled carefu lly. Refer to the installati on instruct ions supplied w ith the replacem ent cable. To replace the CD-ROM and/or floppy disk driv es, f ollow this procedu re: 1.

Raise the securing latch on the floppy disk driv e’s ribbon cable conne ctor (E in Fig ure 29) and lift out the ribbon cable (F in Figure 29).
Upgrading t he Chassis 87 Replac ing the Front Pane l Board To replace the front panel board, follow thi s procedu re: 1. Disconnec t the small rib bon cable (A in Figure 30 ). 2.
