4 ASSEMBL Y Read these instructions and this man u al in its entirety before you attempt to assemble or operate your new lawn mow er . IMPORT ANT : THIS LAWN MOWER IS SHIPPED WITH OUT OIL OR GASOLINE IN THE ENGINE. Y our new lawn mower has been as sem bled at the factory with the ex cep tion of those parts left unassembled for shipping purposes.
5 KNOW YOUR LA WN MOWER READ THIS OWNER'S MANUAL AND SAFETY RULES BEFORE OPERA TING YOUR LA WN MOWER. Compare the illustrations with your lawn mower to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.
6 TO CONVERT MOWER Y our lawn mower was shipped ready to be used as a mulcher . T o convert to bagging or discharging: REAR BAGGING (See Fig. 6) • Open rear door and remove mulcher plug. Store mulcher plug in a safe place. • You can now install the grass catcher or optional clip- ping defl ector.
7 OPERA TION BEFORE ST ARTING ENGINE ADD OIL (See Fig. 9) Y our lawnmower is shipped without oil in the engine. For type and grade of oil to use, see “EN GINE” in the Maintenance section of this manual. CAUTION: DO NOT overfi ll engine with oil, or it will smoke on startup.
8 MOWING TIPS CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher blade attachments on your mower . Such at- tachments are hazardous, will damage your mower and could void your warranty .

10 LA WN MOWER Always observe safety rules when performing main te nance. TIRES • Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect control chem- i cals which can harm rubber . • Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp objects and other hazards that may cause tire damage.
11 TO CLEAN AIR FIL TER 1. Loosen screw and tilt cover to re move. 2. Carefully remove cartridge. 3. Clean by gently tapping on a fl at surface. If very dirty , replace car tridge. CAUTION: Pe tro leum solvents, such as ker o sene, are not to be used to clean car tridge.
12 LA WN MOWER TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT See “TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT” in the Operation section of this manual. REAR DEFLECTOR The rear defl ector , attached between the rear wheels of your mower , is provided to minimize the possibility that objects will be thrown out of the rear of the mower into the operator's mowing position.

14 ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM IMPORT ANT : IT IS IMPORT ANT TO PREVENT GUM DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUEL SYSTEM P ARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FIL TER, FUEL HOSE, OR T ANK DURING STORAGE. ALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL OR METHANOL) CAN A TTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS TO SEP ARA TION AND FORMA TION OF ACIDS DURING STORAGE.
