NOTE: The ambient upper limit o f 35°C (9 5°F) only good up to 15 24 m ( 5000 ft) elevatio n. There is a 1°C (33 .8°F) per 304.8 m (1 000 ft) der ating above 15 24 m (500 0 ft). So, at 3,048 m (10,000 ft), the uppe r ambient air tempe rature l imit is 30°C (8 6°F).
Setup procedures WARNING! To reduc e the risk of elect ric s hock or damage to your equipme n t, observe these practices: • Plug the power cord into an AC ou tlet that is easily ac cessib le. • Disconnect power from the com puter by unplu gging the power co rd from the AC outlet (not by unplugging the po wer cord from the computer).
Adding monitors Planning for additional monitors All graphics cards provided with HP Z series Workstations suppo rt two simultaneous d isplay monitors (see Connecting and confi guring monitors on pag e 26 ). Cards that support more than two monitors are available.
NOTE: Mon itors with resoluti ons above 1920 x 1200 pixe ls at 60 Hz req uire a gr aphics card with either Dual Link DVI ( DL-DVI) or Displa yPort outpu t. To get native resolution with DVI, you must use a DL-DVI cable, not s tandard DVI-I or DVI-D c ables.
Finding supported graphics cards To find information about graphi cs cards supported for your wor kstation: 1. Go to http://www.hp.com/go/q uickspecs . 2. In the left navigatio n bar under Qu ickSpecs , click on your country, then select Workstat ions .
● Graphics card with DisplayPort output — If t he graphics card has four Disp layPort out puts, you can connect a monitor to each connector. Use the prop er adapter s if required. ● Graphics card with DVI output — If you have a PCIe graphics card with two DVI outputs, you can connect a monitor to each connector.

Using a third-party graphics configuration utility Third-party gr aphics cards may include a monitor configuration utility. Upon installa tion, this utility is integrated into Windows. You can select the utility and use it to configure multiple monitors with your workstation.
Converting to desktop configuration (Z220 CMT and Z420) This workstation can b e operated in mini-tower or deskto p confi gura tion. Follow these ste ps to convert to desktop configurati on: NOTE: See a video of this task at http://www.hp.com/ go/sml .

Transferring files and settings The Windows operating system off ers data migration tools that h elp you select and transfer files and data from one Window s-bas ed workstation to another. For informat ion about these tools, go to http://www.microsof t.

System Recovery CAUTION: This procedure will delete all us er information. To prevent los s of information, be sure to back up all user information so you can restore it after recove ry. Always use th e System R estore proced ure before you use the Syst em Recovery program.
Using HP Recovery Disc operating system discs CAUTION: Using a Windows 7 operating system DVD completely erases h ard d rive c ontents and reformats the hard drive. All f iles that you have created a nd a ny software th at you have installe d on the workstation are permanently remo ved.
5 Setting up and restoring Windows 8 This chapter provide s setup and update information for the Wind ows 8 operating syst em. It includes these topics: Topics Additional information on page 37 Backup.
Downloading Windows 8 updates Microsoft may release updates to the operating system. To help keep the computer running optimally, HP recommends checking for the late st updat es during the initia l insta llation and periodically throughout the life of the computer.
1. From the St art sc reen, typ e backup , click Settings , and then select from the list of displayed options. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up yo ur backu p, create a system image, or create system repair media.
Using F11 recovery tools CAUTION: Using F11 completely erases har d drive contents and refo rmats the hard d rive. All files that you have created and any softwa re that you have install ed on the computer are perman ently removed .
Using HP Windows 8 restore media (purchased separately) To order HP Windows 8 restore media, go to http://www.hp.com/ support , select your country or region, and follow th e on-screen instructions. Yo u can also ord er the media b y calling su pport.
6 Setting up and restoring Linux HP offers a variety of Linux solu tions for HP workstation custo mers: ● HP certifie s and supp orts Red Hat Ent erprise Linux (RHEL) on HP workstations. ● HP certifies and supports SUSE® L inux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) on HP worksta tions.
HP Installer Kit for Linux (HPIKL) The HP Installer Kit f or Linu x helps users install certified ve rsions of RHEL or SLED on HP workstations. It is available as an operating system option on all HP workstations.
HPIKL driver disc Recent versions of Red Hat Linux typically require onl y driver updates with minor f ixes to support HP workstations. These releases can usually be supporte d with the HPIKL dr iver disc, which can be used as a post-installati on utility for the st andard Red Hat Linux i nstal l.
Setting up SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) HP offers a 64-bit SLED 11 preloa d on some Z seri es Workstation s and supports 64-bit SLED 11 on other w orkstations. Various ver sions of S LED are cer tified and s upported by SUSE on HP workstations.
Restoring SLED (preloaded systems only) The SLED re store media is requir ed to restore th e Linux operati ng system. To create restore media: 1. Click the SUSE ISO icon on the desk top to go to the /iso folder. This folder contains all i so images used to preload your workstation.
7 Updating the workstation HP is consta ntly worki ng on impr oving yo ur total workstation ex p erience. To ensure that the workstation leverages the lat es t enhancements, HP recommend s th at you install the latest BIOS, driver, and software updates on a regular basis.
Upgrading BIOS To find and download the latest a va ilable BIOS, which includ es the latest enhancements: 1. Go to http://www.hp.com/ go/workstationsupport . 2. Select Download Drivers and Soft ware from the left menu column under Tasks. 3. Follow the instructions to locate the latest BIOS available for the workstation .
8 Diagnostics and Minor Troubleshooting Calling support At times you might enc ounter an issue that requ ires support. Wh en you call su pport: ● Have the computer re adily accessible. ● Write down the com puter serial numbers, product num bers, model names, and model numb ers and have them in fr ont of you.
Locating ID labels To assist in troubleshooting, pr oduct, serial, a nd authenticati on numb ers are available on e ach computer. ● All workstations have a serial nu mber (unique for each workstation) a nd product number. Have these numbers available wh en you contact support.
NOTE: HP Support Assistant is not ava ilable on Linux or Window s 8. Online support Online acce ss and su pport reso urc es includ e web-based troub lesh ooting tools, technica l knowledge databases, driver and patch do wnloads, online communities, a nd product change notifica tion services.
Troubleshooting a problem To help you troubleshoot problem s w ith your system, H P provides the Business Support Center (BSC). The B SC is a p ortal to an extensive selection of online tools. To access BSC and trouble shoot a problem wi th the wo rkstation, comp lete the following: 1.
Helpful hints If you encounter a p roblem with t he workstation, monitor, or so ftware, the followin g general suggestions might help you isol ate and focus on the problem bef ore taking fu rther action. At startup ● Verify that the w orkstation and monitor are plugge d into a work in g electrical outlet.
◦ Plug the monitor into a differ ent video po rt on the comp uter if one is availab le. Alternatively, replace the monitor with a mo nit or that you know is working pro perly. ◦ Verify that the computer and mon itor are plugged in to a working electrical o utlet.
9 Routine Care General cleaning safety precautions ● Never use solvents o r flammable solutions to clean the computer . ● Never immerse any componen t in w ater or cle aning solutio ns; app ly any liquids t o a clea n cloth and then use the cloth on the compo nent.
Cleaning the keyboard CAUTION: Use safety glasse s equipped with s ide shields befo re attempting to clean debris from under the keys. ● If the keyboard has an on/off sw itch, turn it off. ● Follow the safety precautions in the Maintenance and Se rvice Guide for your workstation before cleaning the computer.
