2 Getting to know your device Using the Home screen The Home screen prov ides a centr al location where yo u can custo mize the informa tion, media, and applications you would like to access quickly. Touch or click an icon on the Home screen t o perfor m the action described in the table.
Icon Description NOTE: This icon does not display on all screens. When on the Quick Settings Menu, the Notifications icon display s. Quick Settings Menu —Display icons on the top o f the screen to notify you about new messages or events. When on the Notifications menu, the Quick Settings Menu icon di sp lays.
Component Description Action keys Execute frequently used functions on a keyboard . Fo r more information, see Using an external or attached keyboard and mouse (select devices only) on pa ge 41 Airplane mode key (also referred to as the wireless button) Turns the airplane mode and wireless feature on or off.
Component Description NOTE: HDMI refers to an HDMI or micro HDMI port. Internal display switch Turns off the display and initiates Sta ndby if the display is closed while the power is on. NOTE: The internal display switc h is not visible from the outside of the device.
Component Description ● Blinking: The device is using battery power, or may be in Sleep mode, a power-saving state. ● Off: The device is off. Right TouchPad button Functions like the right button on an ext ernal mouse.
Component Description USB 3.0 charging (powered) port Connects an optional USB device, such as a keyboard, mouse, external drive, printer, scanner or USB hub. Standard USB ports will not charge all USB devices or will charge using a low curre nt. Some USB devices requir e power and require you to use a powered port.
Labels The labels a ffixed or e tched ont o the device provide i nformatio n you may need when yo u troubleshoot device prob lems or travel inter nationally w ith the device.
3 Connecting to a network Connecting to the Internet is qu ick and easy on your Android d e vice. Follow the directions in the sections below to co nnect to a wired local area netwo rk (LAN) ( select devices onl y) or to c onnect wirelessly throu gh your d evice’s onboard WLAN antennas or by Bl uetooth (select d evices only).
Connecting to a wired networ k—LAN (select devices only) Use a LAN connecti on if you want t o connect the device directly to a route r in your home (ins tead of working wi relessly ), or if you want to co nnect to an existing n etwork a t your off ice.
3. Under Wireless and networks , turn on Bluetooth , and then touch or click Bluetooth . 4. Touch or click your device name to make it visible to al l nearb y Bluetooth devices. 5. To find available Bluetooth devi ces, touch or click Search for devices .

Connecting to a wireless display (select devices only) To connect to a wireless displ ay: 1. Touch or click the All Apps icon , and then touch or click the Settings icon . – or – On a touch screen, swip e down from the top-rig ht edge, and then tou ch or cl ick th e Settings icon .
Improving the connection s peed to improve performance When video streaming is not smoo th or the audi o cuts in and out , the wirel ess connection to your adapter may have lost bandwid th. ● Move the device closer to your ad apter. The closer yo ur devic e is to the adapter, the better the connection s peed will be.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP device as an entertai n ment hub to socialize via the webcam, came ra, enjoy a nd manage your musi c, and downloa d a nd watch movies. Or, to make y our device an even mo re powerful entertainm ent center, c onnect external devices like a monitor, p rojector , or TV, or speaker s and headphones.
Taking a screenshot (select devices only) ▲ To take a screenshot, press the power button and the volume dow n button at the same time for about 1 second.
Connecting headsets (s elect devices only) WARNING! To reduc e the risk of person al i njury, lower the volume setting before putting on headphones, earb uds, or a headset. For additi onal safety inform ation , see the Regulatory, Safety and Environmental Notices or Product Notices .
Connecting digital display devic es using a DisplayPort cable (s elect devices only) NOTE: To connect a d igital display dev ice to your devic e, yo u need a DisplayPort (DP-DP) cable, sold separately. The DisplayPort connects a digital displa y device such as a hig h-performance moni tor or pro jector.
5 Navigating the screen You can n avigate the device screen in t he followin g ways: ● Touch gestures ● Keyboard a nd option al mous e (purchased separately) Touch gestures can be used on yo ur device's Touch Pad (select de vices only) or on a touch screen (select devices only).
Two-finger scroll Use the two-finger scroll g estur e to move up, down, or sideways on a page or image. ● Place two fingers slig htly apart on the To uchPad zone or touch screen and then drag them up, down, left, or right. Two-finger pinch zoom Use the two-finger pinch zoom to zoom out or in on ima ges or te xt.
Right-edge swipe Use the right-edge swipe to acce ss additional desk top space on your device. NOTE: On selec t devices , this ges ture may pr ovide ac cess to ad ditiona l apps, settings, o r other features . Top-right-edge swipe Use the top-right-edge swi pe to d ispl ay the Quick Settings Men u .
One-finger slide (touch screen only) Use the one-finger slide to pan or scroll through lists and p ag es, or to move an object. ● To scroll a cross the screen, light ly slide o ne finger across th e screen in the direction you want to move. ● To drag, press and h old an object, and then d rag the object to move it.
6 Using apps and widgets Touch or c lick an app to open an application installed on your device. Widgets are apps with special fu nctiona lity that displays conten t that is updated frequently. You can view the updated content without o pening t he widge t.
To remove an app from th e Home screen: 1. On a touch s creen, t ouch and hold the icon. 2. While holding the icon, drag it to t he Remove icon at the top of th e screen. NOTE: The Remove option is o nly available at the top of the screen i f you are touching an d holding an ico n.
● Touch or click the icon for the app marketplace, and then touch or click a category, or type a keyword in t he search field. ● To download and i nstall an app , follow the on-screen instructio ns. Uninstalling apps 1. Touch or click the All Apps icon , and then touch or click the Settings icon .
7 Voice device features (voice devices only) Using voice calling features (voice devices only) NOTE: The icons on the Ho me screen and the a ppeara nce of the H ome scr een may vary.
8 Using Settings NOTE: The icons in Settings and th e av ailable selections may vary. Use Settings for connecting to net works, s etting p referenc es, a nd fi nding information abo ut your device. ● Touch or click the All Apps icon , and then touch or click the Settings icon .
Device ● Sound —Select volume, ring tone (select devices only), and vibration p references for your device. ◦ Volumes —Touch or clic k Volumes , touch or click Music, video, games, and oth er .
● Battery (select devices only)—View battery cha rg e percenta ge and batte ry usage by var ious featur es. ● Power saving —Enable or disable and set prefe rences for the power savin g mod e. ● Apps —View downloaded a pps and running apps.
◦ Google™ keyboard (select dev ices only) — Allows y ou to configure the Google keyb oard preferences. ◦ Voice typing —Touch or click the check box to enable this feature, and th en touch or click the Settings icon to select preferences. Clear the che ck box to disable this fea tur e.
9 Managing files HP File Manager (select d evices only) is a file managemen t app that provide s f ile browsing , copying, cutting, ren aming, printing and othe r functions on loc al storage/USB drives/SD Cards. If there are multiple app s installed that can open a file , HP File Manage r allows you choose wh ich app to use.
Printing Files Before you can print, you need a printing service installe d on your device. To check what services are currently available, touch or click Settings > System > Printing . NOTE: You can also find the Print option from a suppo rted app.
10 Backing up and recovering your data Automatically updating apps Some online marketpla ces update your apps auto matically. Some k eep a record of yo ur purchases as well as your last s ynched se ttings.
Factory data reset Resetting with the device turned on If the dev ice starts normally, an d if you are able to sign in t o the owner account (the firs t account added to the device), follow the steps in this section. To reset all settings and del ete all data on the device: 1.
6. Use the volume down (-) button to highlight Yes -- delete a ll user dat a . 7. Press the power butto n to begin the reset. A recovery system screen shows the reset process. 8. When the screen displa ys the message Data wipe complete , highlight Reboot system now , and then press the power button to select.
Updating the device using a file-based update NOTE: Before pe rformi ng the foll owing procedure, plug in the AC a dapter for your dev ice , if one has been provided. 1. Download the latest o perating system restore image for your dev ice. a. Go to http://www.
11 Managing power Your device can operate on eithe r battery power o r externa l pow er. When the devic e is running on battery po wer only and an A C power source is not available to c harge the battery, it is important to monitor and conserve the battery charg e.
Running on AC power For informat ion about connecting to AC power, see the Quick St art guide or Setup Instructions poster included with your de vice. The device does not use ba ttery power when the dev ice is connec ted to AC external power with an approved AC adapte r or an optional docking /expansion device.
Contact support for information a bout obtaining a rep lacement A C powe r adapter. Powering off (turning off) the device CAUTION: Unsaved information is l ost when the device shuts down.
12 Using an external or attached keyboard and mouse (select devices only) Using an a ttached key board, o r connecting an ex ternal keybo ard and mouse allows you to type, select it ems, scroll a nd to perfo rm other functions. A keyboard also allows you to use action keys to perform sp ecific f unctions.
Icon Description Plays the previous track of an audio CD or the previous section of a DVD or a BD. Begins, pauses, or resumes play back of an audio CD, a DVD, or a BD. Plays the next track of an audi o CD or the next section of a D V D or a BD. Turns the Airplane mode and wireless feature on or off.
13 Maintenance It is impo rtant that y ou perfo rm s imple maintenance of your dev ice to b e sure t hat it wor ks at pea k performanc e. Cleaning your device Use the following product s to safely clean your device: ● Dimethyl ben zyl ammonium chloride 0.
Cleaning the device vents (select devices only) Air vents keep the device cool. K eep these vents clean by us ing a small, ba ttery-p owered va cuum cleaner. (A battery-pow ered vacuum cleaner eliminates the risk of electric shock.) 1. Vacuum the vents on the device case .
14 Securing your device Locking and unlocking the device Lock —Press the power button. Unlock —Press the power button to turn on the device, then place your finger on the lock icon and slide the icon t o the unlock position. Setting a screen lock 1.
