1I n t r o d u c t i o n This guide contains general information about HP notebook computers. NOTE: Some of the feature s described in this g uide may not be availab le on your comput er.
2 Networking (select models only) Your computer supp orts two type s of Internet acc ess: ● Wireless —See Creating a wireless connection on page 2 . ● Wired —See Connecting to a wired network on page 9 . NOTE: You must set up Internet service be fore you can connect to the Internet.
Icon Name Description Network (connected) Indicates that one or more network de vices are connected to a network. Network (disconnecte d) Indicates that network devices are not conne cted to a network. Network (disabled/ disconnected) Indicates that no wireless connections are available.
Turning wireless devices on or off You can use the wirel ess button or HP Connection Manager (sele ct models only) to turn on and turn off wireless devices. NOTE: A computer may have a wir eless button, a wireless switch, or a wireless key on the keyboard.
Using a WLAN A wireless connection connects the computer to Wi-Fi networks, or WLANs. A WLAN is composed of other computers and accessories that are linked by a wireless ro uter or a wireless access point. Connecting to an existing WLAN 1. Be sure that the WLAN device is on.
Setting up a new WLAN Required equipmen t: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cabl e) (purchased separa tely) (1) and high-speed Intern et service purchas ed from an In te rnet service provider (ISP) ● A wireless router (purchased separately) (2) NOTE: Some cable modems in clude a built-in router.
NOTE: HP recommends that you select WPA2, which is the most advanced of the three encryption protocols. The use of WEP encryption is not reco m mended, beca use it can be o vercome with little effort.
Inserting a SIM NOTE: To identify the SIM sl ot locat ion, see the Getting Started guide. 1. Shut down the comp uter. If you are not sure whet her the computer is off or in Hiberna tion, turn the computer on by pressing the power bu tton . Then sh ut down the computer throu gh the operating system.
Using GPS (select models only) Your computer may be equipped wi th a Global Positioning System (GPS) device. GPS satellites deliver location, speed, and direction information to GPS-equipped systems. For more information, see the HP GPS and Location software Help.
Connecting a modem cable 1. Plug the modem cab le into the modem jack (1) on the computer. 2. Plug the modem ca ble into the RJ-11 telephone wall jack (2) or a ro ute (not illu strated).
Connecting a country- or region- specific modem cable adapter Telephone jacks vary by country or region. To use the modem and the modem cable outside the country or region in which you purchased th e comput er, you must obtain a coun try- or regi on-specific modem cable adap ter.
Adding new locations when trave ling On a new computer, the onl y location setting available to the mod em is a location setting for the country or region in which you purchased th e computer.
Connecting to a local area netw ork (LAN) (select models only) Connecting to a LAN requires an 8- pin, RJ-45 netwo rk cabl e (purchased separately). If the network cable contains noise supp ression ci rcuitry (1) , which prevent s interference from TV and r adio reception, orient the circuitry en d of the cable (2) toward the comput er.
3 Multimedia Your computer may inclu de the following mul timedia components: ● Integrated speaker(s) ● Integrated micropho ne(s) ● Integrated web cam ● Preinstalled multimedia software ● Mu.
Adjusting the volume Depending on your computer model, you ca n adjust the volume usin g the following: ● Volume buttons ● Volume hotkeys (speci fic keys pressed in combination with the fn key) ● Volume keys WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury, adjust the volu me before putting on he adphones, earbuds, or a headset.
The webcam software enable s you to ex periment with th e following features: ● Capturing and sharing vide o ● Streaming video with instant message software ● Taking still photos Administrators can set th e security level for Face Recognition in the Security Manager Se tup Wizard or HP ProtectTools Administ rative Co nsole.
DisplayPort The DisplayPort connects the computer to an option al video or a udio device, such as a h igh-definition television, or to any compatib le digital or a udio componen t. The DisplayPort delivers h igher performance th an the VGA external mo nitor port and improv es digital connect ivity.
HDMI The HDMI port conne cts the comput er to an optional video or audio device, such a s a high-defini tion television, or to any comp atible digital or audi o component. NOTE: To transmit video and/or audio si gnals through the HDMI port, you need an HDMI cable (purchased separa tely).
Intel Wireless Display (select models only) Intel® Wireless Display allows you to share your computer co ntent wirelessly on you r TV. To experience wireless disp lay, a wireless TV adapte r (purchased separately) is required. DVDs that have output protection ma y not play on Inte l Wireless Displa y.
4 Power management NOTE: A computer may have a power button or a p ower switch. The term power button is us ed throughout this guide to refer to both types o f power controls. Shutting down the computer CAUTION: Unsaved inform ation is lost when the co mputer shuts do wn.
Setting power options Using power-saving states The computer has two power-saving states that are e nabled at the factory: Sleep a nd Hibernation. When Sleep is initiate d, the power ligh ts blink and the scree n clears. Your work is save d to memory, letting you exit Sleep faster than exiting Hibernat ion.
To initiate Hibernation: ▲ Click Start , click the arrow next to the Sh ut down button, an d then click Hibernate . To exit Hibernation: ▲ Briefly press the power button . The power lights turn on and your work retu rns to the screen where you stopped working.
3. Change the settings as n eeded. 4. To change additional settings, click Change adva nced powe r settings and make your changes. Setting password protection on wakeup To set the computer to prompt for a p assword when the computer exits Sleep or Hibern ation, follow these steps: 1.
Using HP Power Assistant (select models only) HP Power Assistant allows you to configure system settings to op t imize your computer's power consumption and batte ry charge.
Using Battery Chec k Help and Support provides informa tion on the st atus of the battery installed in the co mputer. To run Battery Check: 1. Connect the AC a dapter to the computer. NOTE: The computer must be connected to external power for Battery Check to work properly.
NOTE: For additional information about th e power meter, see Using the power meter on page 22 . The computer takes the follo wing actions for a critical battery level: ● If Hibernation is ena bled and the com puter is on or in the Sleep state, the computer initiates Hibernatio n.
If a computer will be unused and unplugged from external power for more than 2 weeks, remove the user-replaceabl e battery and store it sepa rately. To prolong the ch arge of a stored battery, place it in a cool, dry place. NOTE: A stored battery shou ld be checked every 6 mo nths.
When you disconne ct external AC pow er, the followi ng events occur : ● The computer switches to battery po wer. ● The display bright ness is automatically d ecreased to save ba ttery life.
Switchable graphics/dual gr aphics (select models only) Select computers are equipp ed with eith er switchable graphics or dual graphics. ● Switchable graphics—Supporte d by both AMD™ an d Intel. If your computer has AMD dynamic switchable graphics, it suppor ts only switchable graphics.

5 External cards and devices Using Media Card Reader cards (select models only) Optional digita l cards provide secure data storag e a nd convenient data sharing. These cards are often used with digital med ia–equipped came ra s and PDAs as well as with o ther computers.
Removing a digital card CAUTION: To reduce the risk of loss of data or an unresponsive syst em, use the following procedure to safely re move the digital card. 1. Save your information and close all pro g rams associated wi th the digita l card. 2. Click the remove ha rdware icon in the notif ication area , at the far righ t of the taskbar .
Inserting an ExpressCard CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer a nd external med ia cards, do not insert a PC Card into an ExpressCard slot. CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the conn ectors: Use minimal force when inserti ng an ExpressCa rd.
Removing an ExpressCard CAUTION: To reduce the risk of loss of data or an unresponsive syst em, use the following procedure to saf ely remove the ExpressC ard.
Inserting a smart card 1. Hold the card label-side up, and gently slid e the card into the smart card reader until the card is seated. 2. Follow the on-screen instruction s for logging on to the computer using th e smart card PIN. Removing a smart card ▲ Grasp the edge of the smart card, and then pull it out of the smart car d reader.
Connecting a USB device CAUTION: To reduce the risk o f damage to a USB conn ector, use minimal force to connect the device. ▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB po rt. NOTE: The following illustration may look sli ghtly different than your computer.
Connecting a 1394 device CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to a 1394 port connector, use mini mal force to connect the device. ▲ To connect a 1394 device to the comp uter, connect the 1394 cabl e for the device to th e 1394 port. You will hear a sound when the de vice has been de tected.
Connecting an eSATA device CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to an eSATA port co nnector, use mi nimal force to connect the device. ▲ To connect an eSATA de vice to the computer, connect the eSAT A cable for the device to the eSATA port. You will hear a sound when the de vice has been de tected.
Using a serial device (select models only) Select computer models include a serial p ort that con nects optional devices such as a serial modem, mouse, or printer. Some serial devices may requ ire additional sup port software, which is usually included with th e device.
USB drives include the following types: ● 1.44-megabyte diske tte drive ● Hard drive module ● External optical drive (CD, DVD, an d Blu-ray) ● MultiBay device Using the expansion port (select .

Using hard drives Improving hard drive performance Using Disk Defragmenter As you use the compute r, files on th e hard drive become fra gmented. Disk Def ragmenter consolidates the fragmented files and folders on the hard drive so that the system can run more efficiently.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard (select mode ls only) HP 3D DriveGuard protects th e hard drive by pa rking the drive and halting da ta requests under eithe r of the following conditions: ● You drop the compu ter. ● You move the compute r with the display cl osed while th e computer is running on battery power.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard software The HP 3D DriveGuard so ftware enables you to perform the following tasks: ● Enable and disa ble HP 3D DriveGua rd. NOTE: De pending on you r user privileges, you may be unable to ena ble or disable H P 3D DriveGuard.
5. Gently press the disc (3) down onto the tray spind le until the disc snaps into place. 6. Close the disc tray. NOTE: After you insert a disc, a short pause is normal. If you have not select ed a media player, an AutoPlay dialog box opens. It p rompts you to select how yo u want to use the m edia content.
When the dis c tray opens normally 1. Press the rel ease button (1) on the d rive bezel to rele ase the disc tra y, and then ge ntly pull out the tray (2) un til it stops . 2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by ge ntly pressing dow n on the spindl e while lifting the oute r edges of the di sc.

Sharing optical drives Although your computer may not have an integra ted optical drive, you can access software a nd data, and install applicatio ns, by sharing an opti cal driv e connected to anothe r computer in your network.

Setting passwords in Windows Password Function Administrator password* Protects access to a Windows administrator-level account. NOTE: This password cannot be used to access Computer Setup contents. User password* Protects access to a Windows user account.
Setting passwords in Computer Setup Password Function BIOS administrator password* Protects access to Computer Setup. DriveLock master password* Protects access to the internal hard drive that is protected by DriveLock. It is also used to remove DriveLock p rotection.
Changing a BIOS adminis trator password 1. Turn on or restart the compu ter, and then press esc while the “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of th e screen. 2. Press f10 to enter Computer Setup. 3. Use a pointi ng device or the arrow keys to select Secur ity > Chan ge Password , and then press enter .
Managing a DriveLock password To set, change, or delete a DriveLock passwo rd in Computer Setup, follow these ste ps: 1. Turn on the co mputer, and then press es c while the “Press the ESC ke y for Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Removing Automatic Dr iveLock protection To remove DriveLock protection in Co mputer Setup, follow the se steps: 1. Turn on or restart the compu ter, and then press esc while the “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of th e screen.
Using the fingerprint reader (select models only) Integrated finge rprint readers are availab le on select computer mo dels. In orde r to use the fingerpr int reader, you mus t set up a user a ccount with a Wind ows passwor d on the compute r. This accoun t allows yo u to log on to you r computer with a swipe of a designated finger.
Using Internet security software When you use the co mputer to acc ess email, a netw ork, or the Internet, you pote ntially expose the computer to computer viruses, spyware, and other malicious atta cks that can disable the operating system, programs, or utilities, or cause them to function abnormally.
Updates to the operating system and other software may have become ava ilable after the c omputer left the factory. To be sure that all availabl e updates are installed on the co mputer, observe these guidelines: ● Run Windows Update as soon as possible after you set up you r computer.
8 Maintenance Cleaning your computer Cleaning products Use the following produ cts to safely clean and d isinfect your computer: ● Dimethyl benzyl ammoni um chloride 0.3 pe rcent maximum concentratio n (For example: germicidal disposable wipe s. These wipes come in a variety of brand names.
Cleaning the sides an d cover To clean and d isinfect the sides and cover, use a so ft microfibe r cloth or chamois moiste ned with one of the cleaning solutions listed previously or use an acceptable germi cidal disposable wip e. CAUTION: When cleaning the T ouchPad and keyb oard, do not let liqu ids drip between the keys.
Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you up date your prog rams and drive rs on a regula r basis with the la test versions. For U.S. supp ort, go to http://www.hp.com/go/contactHP . For wo rldwide support, go to http://welcome.hp.com/ country/us/en/wwcontact_us.
Using SoftPaq Download Manager HP SoftPaq Download Manag er (SDM) is a tool tha t provides quick access to SoftPaq i n formation for HP business computers witho ut requiring the SoftPaq number. Usin g this tool, you can easily search for SoftPaqs, an d then download and unpack them.
Using HP Software Setup util ity HP Software Setup utility is a tool that provides qu ick access to applications that are n ot already installed on the computer . HP Software Setup utilit y allows you to install hardware- enabling drivers and optional software applications.
9 Computer Setup (BIOS) and Advanced System Diagnostics Using Computer Setup Computer Setup, or Basic Input/Ou tput System (BIOS), controls communication between all the inpu t and output devices on the system (such as disk drive s, display, keyboard, mou se, and printer).
To exit Computer Setup menu s, choose one of the following method s: ● To exit Computer Setup menus without saving your chan ges: Click the Exit icon in the lower-left corn er of the screen, and then follow the o n-screen instructions.
Updating the BIOS The next sections describ e different ways of updating the BIOS. Downloading SoftPaqs to update the BIOS Most BIOS update s on the HP website are packaged in compre ssed files called SoftP aqs . To install BIOS updates from the HP website, follow the steps b elow: 1.
Using f10 setup to update the BIOS 1. Download th e SoftPaq from the HP website. NOTE: Verify that the UEFI system diagnostics is installed on your computer (or USB flash drive). 2. Click Run , and then click Cancel at the Update/USB b ootable dialog box.
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the compu ter or an unsuccessful installati on, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external p ower using the AC adapter.
Main menu Select To do this System information ● View and change the system time and date. ● View identification information about yo ur computer. ● View specification information about the processor, memory size, and system BIOS. ● Memory test—This test analyzes the physical cond ition of the memory mo dules. If it reports an error, replace the memory modules immediately. ● Battery test—This test analyzes the conditi on of the battery and calibrates the battery if necessary.
10 MultiBoot About the boot device order As the computer starts, the system attempts to boot from enabled bo ot devices. The MultiBoot utility, which is enabled at the facto ry, controls the orde r in whic h the system se lects a boot device.
Enabling boot devices in Computer Setup The computer wil l boot to a USB device or a NIC device only if the device ha s first been enabled in Computer Setup. To start Computer Setu p and enable a USB device or a NIC device as a bo ot device, follow these steps: 1.
● Changing the boot order also chan ges the logical drive designati ons. For example, if you start up from a CD-ROM drive with a disc formatted as dr ive C, that CD-ROM drive be comes drive C and the hard drive in the hard drive bay becomes drive D.
