Buttons and lights Use the printer buttons to turn the printer on and off, cancel a pri nt job, restart a job, and open HP Photosm art Software. The p rinter lights give you visual cues about the status of the printer.
Power butto n and light Use the Power button to turn the printer on and off. It can t ake a few seconds for the printer to turn on after you press the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flash es when the prin ter is processing. CAUTION: Always use the Power butt on to turn the printer on and off.
Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cart ridge Status lights a re located in the center of th e control panel. For more information, se e Print cartridges .
1. The left status li ght represents th e tri-color print cart ridge, which is insta lled in the lef t side of the print cartridge cradle. • The light is o n and solid when t he tri-color print cartridge is low on ink. • The light f lashes when the tri-colo r print cart ridge needs to be serviced.
Resume button an d light The Resume lig ht flashes when an a ction is required , such as loading paper or cl earing a paper jam . When the probl em is solved, press th e Resume button to contin ue printing.
NOTE: You can also use the front U SB port to downloa d images from e xternal card readers, USB flash drives, and other USB devices. Cancel icon The printer has a Can cel icon located to the lef t of the Pow er button. Whe n the printer is busy, the Pow er button funct ions like a Cancel button.
Unfold the paper trays To unfold the paper trays 1. Lower the input tray. 2. Lower the output t ray. 3. Pull out the o utput-tray exte nsion. Chapter 3 16 Get started.
Input tray The input tray h olds paper or other media. 1 Input tray Paper guide Print on different size s of media by sliding the pap er guide to the right or t o the left.
Raise the outpu t tray to load paper or other me dia. Lower the out put tray before printing. To prevent pape r from fall ing out of the ou tput tray, pu ll out both sect ions of the out put- tray extension. If you are printin g in the Fast Draft mo de, raise the outpu t-tray extension stop.
4. Raise the ou tput tray. 5. Raise the in put tray. Print cartridges Three print cartri dges can be used with the printer. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-col or print cartridge 3 Photo print cartridge.
Use print cartridges The print cartridges can be used in the foll owing ways: • Everyday printi ng : Use the bl ack and tri-color print cartridges for everyday print jobs.
NOTE: When the printe r operates in i nk-backup mode, a m essage is displ ayed on screen. If the message is displa yed and two print cartridge s are installed in th e printer, verify that the p rotective piece of pl astic tape has been rem oved from each p rint cartridge.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer con nects to the compu ter with a universal serial b us (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 co mpatible cable. For instructio ns about connecting the printer with a USB cable, see the Setup Guid e that came with the pr inter.
5 Print using the Photosmart Essential button To quickly print phot os, use the Phot osmart Essential button. • About the Photosma rt Essential bu tton • About the HP Photosmart Softwa re About the Photosmart Essential button The Photosmart Essen tial button i s located on the fron t panel of the printer.
6 Print photos using the front USB port You can transfer ph otos from a digit al camera, externa l card reader, or USB flas h drive to your computer, and then print them.
To print from the front USB port 1. Load photo p aper into t he printer. For instructions a bout loading photo paper, click one of the fol lowing options: • Print borderless photos • Print photos w ith a border 2. Connect your cam era or other USB device to the front USB port usi ng a USB cable.

7 Print photos The printer softw are offers several featu res that make pri nting digital p hotos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to prin t photos Print a borderless photo .
Prepare to p rint 1. Raise the o utput tray. 2. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left. 3. Verify that the photo paper is fl at. 4. Place the photo pap er in the right side o f the input tra y. The side to be print ed on should face dow n and the short edge sho uld point tow ards the printer.
4. In the Printing Shortc uts list, click Photo Printin g-Borderless , and th en select th e following o ptions: • Print Quality : Normal or Best NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Features tab, and then click Maximum dpi in t he Print Quality drop-down lis t.

Print posters Guidelines • For poster printing , sections of t he poster are a utomaticall y arranged on indivi dual sheets that ca n be taped tog ether. After the se ctions of a po ster have be en printed, trim the edges of the sheets and tape t he sheets toget her.
4. In the Poster Printing drop-down list, sel ect the number of shee ts for the poster. 5. Click the Select Tiles butto n. 6. Check that the number of tiles that are selected matche s the number of sheets f or the poster, an d then click OK . 7. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK .
Print NOTE: If your softw are program incl udes an iron-on transfe r printing feat ure, follow the instructions th at are provided wit h the software prog ram. Otherwise, follow t he instructions b elow. 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2.
9 Printing tips Check your printe r • Connect t he printer to your compu ter. • Print a test page . Save time •U s e t h e Printing Shortcuts tab. • Set the order that the pages p rint. Save money •U s e Fast/Economical printing . •P r i n t multiple p ages on a sing le sheet of paper .
NOTE: When you sel ect a printing sh ortcut the ap propriate prin ting optio ns are automatically di splayed. You can leave them as is or change t hem.
To use Fast/Eco nomical pr inting 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Fast/E conomical Printing . 4. Specify the print sett ings that you want , and then click OK .
Print quality settings • Fast Draft produ ces draft-qualit y output at t he fastest pri nting speed, w hile usin g the least amount of ink. • Fast Norm al produces higher qualit y output th an the Fast Draf t setting and prints more quickly than the Normal setti ng.
To print in Maximum dp i mode 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Pa per Type drop-down list, click More , and then select the appropriate paper type. 4. In the Print Qual ity drop-down list , click Maximum dpi .
3. In the Size drop -down list, sel ect Custom . The Custom Paper Size d ialog box is displa yed. 4. In the Name box, type a name f or the custom paper si ze. 5. In the Width and Le ngth boxes, t ype the dimensions of th e custom paper size. The minimum and maximum dimensio ns are displayed be neath Widt h and Length.
To pre view a p rinted doc ument 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show preview before printing check box. 4. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK . Before the docum ent prints, a p review is disp layed.
To print a two-sided document wi th a book bind ing ▲ Follow th e instructions for basic two-side d printing. To print a two-sided document w ith a tablet binding 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-si ded printin g drop-dow n list, clic k Manu al .
10 Printer software • Make the HP Deskjet the default printe r . • Set the default print settings for all documents. •U s e t h e Printer Properties dial og box to select pr inting options. •U s e t h e What's T his? help to le arn more about specifi c print setting s.
To save time when pri nting, set the def ault print sett ings to optio ns that you use oft en. That way, you do not have to specify the options e very time you use the print er. To change the d efa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digita l Imaging Mon itor icon on the righ t side of the Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Printer Properties dialo g box can vary dependi ng on the software program you are u sing. What's This? h elp Use the What's Thi s? help to learn about the features that yo u see on the Pri nter Properties dialog b ox.
Download printer software updates Download the latest printer so ft ware update eve ry few months to ensure you have the latest f eatures an d improvements.

You can find the se lection number i n three places: • Selection num ber label: Loo k at the label on the print cartridge th at you are repla cing. 1 Selection number label • Printer document ation: For a li st of print cartrid ge selection num bers, see the reference guid e that came with t he printer.
5. Press down on the prin t cartridge, and the n slide it out of the p rint cartridge cradle. 6. Remove the replacement prin t cartridge from its packag ing and carefully remove the plastic tape. Hol d the print cartridge so tha t the copper strips are on the bottom and facing to ward the prin ter.
7. Slide the print cart ridge at a sligh t upward angle in to the cradle u ntil the cart ridge snaps into place. 8. Close the pr inter cover. Align the print cart ridges for optimum pri nt quality. For information a bout storing pri nt cartridges, se e Maintain print cart ridges .
To clean the p rint cartridge s 1. Open the printe r Toolb ox . 2. Click Clean the Print Car tridges . 3. Click Clean , and then follow the onscreen instructions. If your document s are still faded after cleaning, man ually clean t he print cartridg e contacts .
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet e jects ink onto the paper in a fine mist , ink smudges wil l eventually appea r. To remove smudges, stains, or drie d ink from the ex terior 1. Turn off the HP Deskj et, and then discon nect the power cord.
To prepare to cle an 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until the p rint cartridge cradl e moves to the righ t side of the HP De skjet and is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the print cart ridges and plac e them on a piece of paper, wi th the copper strip s facing up.
Print cartridge storage and handling Follow thes e guidelines to h elp maintain HP print ca rtridges and ensure con sistent print quality: • Install the cartri dge on or before the Install by date, which is printed on the cart ridge package.
To remove th e print cartridge fr om the prin t cartridge protec tor 1. Press down and back o n the top of the pro tector to release the print cartridge. 2. Slide the pr int cartridge out of the protec tor. CAUTION: Do not drop t he print cartridge . Dropping t he print cartridge can damage it.

"Print cartridge i s in the wron g slot" message If you recei ve this error message, th e print cartridge is installed in the wrong side of t he print cartrid ge cradle. Follow the in structions in " Print cartridge is in th e wrong slot" message to resolve the pro blem.
Solution: To resolve the problem 1. Make sure that no USB de vices other than the pri nter, the keyboa rd, and the mouse are connect ed to the co mputer. 2. Disconnect and recon nect the U SB cable. 3. Make sure that the prin ter is connected di rectly to a USB port on the computer (instead of throug h a USB hub).
Printer name does not appear Solution: If th e printer software seem s to instal l correctly, but the printer na me does not appear in th e list of printe rs when you cl ick Print on the File me nu or in the Printe rs folder in Cont rol Panel, try reinstalling t he printer softw are.
What the flashing light means The printer light s indicate the printer status. 1 Power light 2 Print Cartridge Status lights 3 Resume light Power lig ht is flas hing 1 Power light If the Power light is flashing, the printer is preparing t o print. The ligh t stops flashing when the printer ha s received al l data.
Resume light is flashi ng 1 Resume light If the Resume li ght is flas hing, check th e following co nditions: • The printer mi ght be out of p aper. Place paper in the i nput tray, and t hen press the Resume button. • There might be a p aper jam. For informati on about cleari ng a paper jam, see Paper jam .
Print Cartridge Status ligh ts are on or flashing The printer has two pri nt cartridge stat us lights. 1. The left status li ght represents th e tri-color print cart ridge, which is insta lled in the lef t side of the print cartridge cradle. 2. The right stat us light represent s the black or the photo print cartridge.
Front USB por t lights are flashing If the front USB port lights are fl ashing, follow the instruct ions in Front U SB port lights are flashi ng . Printer does not print • Verify the following • C.
• If you are connect ing the printer throug h a USB hub, make sure t he hub is turned on . If the hub is o n, try connecting t he printer directl y to your computer. • Try connecting the U SB cable to another USB port on your compu ter. After you check the connection s, try restarti ng your computer.
If there are no loose or broken parts, follow these step s: 1. Check for and remove any obstacles, such as packing tape or material s, that prevent the print cartri dges from moving back and forth. 2. Make sure the print cart ridges are insta lled securely i n the print cartri dge cradle.
For information a bout updating t he printer softw are, see Download pri nter software updates . Computer does not me et syst em requirem ents If your computer d oes not have enough R AM or a large amount of free space on the h ard drive, the pr inter processing t ime will be longer.
3. Check the list of print cartridges that ca n be used in the print er. a . Open the pri nter Toolbox . b . Click the Estimated Ink Leve ls tab. c . Click the Print Ca rtridge Informa tion button and vie w the list of p rint cartridge selecti on numbers.
"Print cartridg e is in the wrong slot" messag e Cause: If you receive thi s error message, the print cartri dge is installed in the wrong side of the print cartridge cradle. Solution: Always insta ll the tri-color print cartridge in the left print cartri dge cradle compartmen t.
removed from each prin t cartridge. When pl astic tape covers the p rint cartridge contacts, the p rinter cannot detect that the print cartri dge is inst alled.
4. Remove the rear access do or. Press the handle to th e right, and then pull out the door. 5. Remove any paper that is inside the printer by pul ling it out from the back of the printer. If you are p rinting labe ls, verify th at a label did not b ecome detach ed from the label sheet while pa ssing throug h the printer.
Printer does n ot feed paper Solution: Try one or more of the fol lowing soluti ons: • Reduce the number of sheets in the input t ray. • Remove the pa per from t he input tray, a nd then reload it.
Paper mi ght be lo aded im properl y The printer might print on multi ple sheets of paper at once if the pap er is loaded too f ar toward the back of t he printer or if the paper guide is not positi oned firmly aga inst the paper.
Horizontal lines appe ar on a photo Solution: If light or d ark horizontal li nes appe ar on p hotos, foll ow this proce dure: 1. Clean t he print cartrid ges. 2. Reprint the photo. 3. If horizontal l ines still occur, pe rform a print qual ity calibra tion .
Verify that the p hoto paper is not curle d. If the pho to paper is curled, plac e the paper in a plastic bag an d gently bend it in the opposite direction of the curl until th e paper lies flat. If the p roblem persists, th en use photo pa per that is not curl ed.
• If printing in grayscale, select High Quality un der Print in Grayscale on the Color tab. • Do not pri nt borderless doc uments in ink-ba ckup mode. Always h ave two print cartridges installed in t he printer when printing borderle ss documents.
3. If horizontal lines stil l occur, perform a pr int quality calibratio n . A black and a tri-color p rint cartridge must be installed for print qu ality calibrati on. 4. Reprint the photo. Image is printed at an angle Solution: Verify that no problem exi sts with the so urce image.
Fading occur s on the edges of a photo Verify that the pho to paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curl ed, place the p aper in a plastic bag a nd gently bend it i n the opposite dire ction of the curl until the pap er lies flat. If the problem persists, t hen use photo pa per that is no t curled.
For most paper typ es If the photo has an unwanted b order, try one of th e following so lutions: • Align the print cartri dges . • Open the Printer Pr operties dialog b ox , click the Features ta.
Print quality is poor If you are having problems with p rint quality, try t he solutions in this section and observe the fol lowing guide lines: • Replace refil led or empty cart ridges. • Check the device set tings to make sure that the print mode a nd paper selection is correct for the pap er and the task.
Prints are faded Solution: • Verify that neithe r of the print cart ridges is low on ink. For more info rmation, see View estimated ink levels . If a print cart ridge is lo w on ink, consider replaci ng the print cartri dge. For the corre ct part numbers, se e the reference guide th at came with the printer.
• The print cartri dges might be out of ink. Replace one or bo th empty print cartridges. For more info rmatio n, see View estimated ink levels . • You migh t be trying to print a border less documen t with only th e black prin t cartridge installed .
Envelope is prin ted at a n angle Solution: 1. Slide the flap i nside the envelope before loadi ng it in t he printer. 2. Confirm th at the paper gui de fits firm ly against the e dge of the en velope.
