1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the prin ter buttons to turn the pr inter on and of f, cancel a print job, and restart a job. The printer light s give you visual cues about the stat us of the printer.
Power butto n and li ght Use the Power button to turn th e prin ter on a nd off. It can ta ke a fe w seconds for the printer to tur n on after yo u press the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light fla shes when the print e r is processing.
Resume bu tton and light The Resume ligh t flashes when an action is required, such as loading paper or cl earing a paper jam. Whe n the problem is solved, press the Resume button to continue printing. 1 Resume button and ligh t Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cartridg e Status lights are loca ted on the control pane l.
1 Tri-color print cartrid ge light 2 Black print cartridge light 1. The left statu s light represents the tri -color print cartridge, which is install ed in the left side of the prin t cartridge carriage. • The light is on and solid when the tri-color print cartridg e is low on ink.
2. Pull out the t ray extension. 3. If you are printing in th e Fast Draft mode, fold out t he tray extension stop. Use the p aper tray Print on different sizes of media by sliding the pape r guide to the right or to t h e left. The printer deposits pri nted pages on the top of th e paper tray.
Fold the paper tr ay To fold the paper tray 1. Remove p aper or other media from the paper tray . 2. If the tray extensio n stop is folded out, fold it back in.
Print cartridges Two print cartridg es can be used with the p rinter. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-col or print cartridge NOTE: Your printer m ight be packaged with only a tri-color print cartridge. For better results, instal l a black print cartridge in addit ion to the tri-color print cartri dge.

Ink-backup mode output Printing in ink-backup mode slows the printer and affects t he quality of printouts. Installed print cartridge Result Black print cartridge Colors print as grayscale. Tri-color print cartri dge Colors print but black is grayed and is not a true black.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer con nects to the compu ter with a universal serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 compatible cable . For instructio ns about connectin g the prin ter with a USB cable, see the Setup Guide that came with the p rinter.
5 Print photos The printer softw are offers several fe atures that make printing digita l photos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to pr int photos Print borderless photos . Prepare to p rint 1. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left. 2. Verify that the photo paper is flat. 3. Place the phot o paper in the right side of the tray. The side to be printed on shou ld face down and t he short edge should point towards the printer.
Guidelines • For maximum fade resist ance, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. • Verify that th e plai n paper that yo u are usi ng is flat. • Do not excee d the pa per tray cap acity: 80 shee ts of paper. Prepare to pri nt 1. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft.
4. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Photo Printin g-with white bor ders , and then select the following op tions: • Print Quality : Normal or Best NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advanced tab, and then select Enabled from th e Ma ximum dpi drop-down list.
Print NOTE: If your softwa re program includes a photo printing feature, follow the instructions that a re provided with the software program. Otherwise, follow these instructions. 1. Open the photo i n a software program that allow s editing, such as HP Photo smart Software.

Print greeting cards Greeting car ds • Unfold pre folded cards, and then place them in the p aper tray. • For great result s, use HP Greeting Card Paper. • Do not exceed the paper tray capacity: 20 cards. Prepare to p rint 1. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left.

7 Printing tips Learn how to use printing shortcuts, select a paper type , change the print resol ution, set the page order, print m ultiple pages on a sin gle sheet, previ ew a document, and use two- sided print ing. Click any o f the following links: Check your pr inter • Connect the printer .
NOTE: When you select a printing shortcu t the appropriate printing options are automatically d isplayed. You can leave the m as is or change them. This secti on contai ns the foll owing top ics: • .
3. In the Printin g Shortcuts li st, click th e prin ting shor tcut th at you wan t to del ete. 4. Click Delete . The printing short cut is removed from the list . NOTE: Only the shortcut s that you have created can be del eted. The origi nal HP shortcuts cannot be deleted.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up to 16 pages on a single sheet of paper. 12 4 3 To print multiple pag es on a single sheet of paper 1.
4. In the Print In Grayscale drop-down list, select from th e following options: • High Quality : uses all the available colors to p rint your photo in grayscale. T his creates smoot h and natura l shades of gra y. • Black Ink Only : uses black ink to print your ph oto in grayscale.
To pre view a p rinted do cumen t 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show preview before printing check bo x. 4. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK . Before the docum ent prints, a p review is displayed.
Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskj e t automati cally chooses a print qua lity and spee d setting de pending on the paper t ype setting yo u select. You can also change the prin t quality setti ng to customize the spe ed and quality of the print process.
Printing in maximum dpi takes longer than pri nting with other set tings and requires a la rge amount of di sk space. To print in Maximum dp i mode 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Advan ced tab. 3. In the Printer Features area , select Enabled from the Maximum dpi drop -down list.
To print a two-sided document w ith a tablet bindi ng 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-si ded printing drop-d own list, click Manual . 4. Select the fo llow ing check boxes: • Flip Pages Up • Preserv e Layout 5.
To print a We b page 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web browser, clic k Print . TIP: For best results, select HP Smart Web Printing on the File menu. A check mark appears w hen it is se lected. The Print dial og box appears.
8 Printer software • Make the HP Deskj et the default printer • Set default print sett ings • Printer Properti es dialog b ox • What's Th is? help • Download printer softwa re updates Make the HP Deskjet the default printer You can set the H P Deskjet as th e default printer to use from any so ftware prog ram.
To save time when print i ng, set the defau l t print setti ngs to options that you use often. That way, you do not h ave to specify the opti ons every time you use the p rinter. To change the defa ult print settings 1. Double-click the HP D i gital Imag ing Monitor icon on the right side of t he Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to t he Printer Propertie s dialog box can vary depen ding on the software progr am you are us ing. What's This? help Use the What's Th is? help to learn about the f eatures that you see on the Pri nter Properties dialog box.

Choose ca rtridge combinat ions for be st results • Text, graphics, a nd color photos: Combine tri-color an d black print cartridges. • Metallic accents: Combine tri-co lor and metallic print cartrid ges. NOTE: Metallic print cartridges are availa ble in select countries/regions.
4. Slide the prin t cartridge out of the carria ge. 1 Press the Power button 2 Open the printer cover 3 Push down on the print ca rtridge 4 Slide the print cartridge out of the carriage 5. Remove the replacement prin t cartridge from its packaging and carefull y remove the plastic tape.
1 Ink nozzles 2 Copper contacts 6. Slide the print cartridge firmly in to the carriage at a slight upwa r d angle unti l you feel resistance. 7. Push the cartridge into the c arriage. You hear a snap when the print cart ridge is correctly positioned. 8.
3. Click Align the Print Cartridges . 4. Click Align , an d then follow the onscreen i nstructions. The HP Deskje t prints a test pag e, aligns the print cartridg es, and calibrates the printer.
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet e jects ink onto the paper in a fine mist, ink smudg es will eventually appea r. To remove smudges, stains, or d ried ink from the ex terior 1. Turn off the HP Deskj et, and then discon nect the power cord.
To prepare to cle an 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait unti l the print cartridge carriage moves t o the right side of t he HP Deskjet a nd is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the print cart ridges and place them on a piece of paper, with the copper strips facing up.
• When you remove a print cartridge from the printer, store it in an airtight plastic container to pr otect your print cartridge and to prevent the ink from drying ou t. • Keep all unused pri nt cartridges in their origina l sealed packages unt i l they are needed.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartri dge reorder number, see the printed do cumentation that came with the HP Deskj et. You can also use th e software that came with the HP Deskjet to f ind out the reorder number fo r the print cartridg e.

Print cartridg e problem message The printer cannot pri nt if the print cartridge s are faulty, or if they are not in stalled properly. If you recei v e a message stat ing there is a problem with a print cartridge, follow the instructions in Resolving pri nt cartridg e error messages to resol ve the problem.
Original HP ink d epleted Solution: Follow the pro mpts on the computer screen to cont inue or replace the indicated print cartridges. For m ore information, see Re place print cartridges . Ink levels might not be available for t he indicated print cartrid ges.
removed from each prin t cartridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridg e contacts, the p rinter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is in stalled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Prin ters folder or from the printer icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect al l applications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft W ord. To set the paper size in Micr osoft Word 1.
Installation pr ogram stops Cause: If the installation p rogram stops when i t looks for new hardw a re, one of t he following issue s is causing a communicat ion problem: • The USB cable is old or d efective. • Software, su ch as an antivirus program, i s running.
To resolve the problem 1. Disconnect the US B cable from the printer. 2. Disconnect the pow e r cord from the prin ter. 3. Wait approxi mately 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the pow e r cord to the printer. 5. Reconnect the USB cabl e to the printer. 6. If the “Unkno wn Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The prin ter lig hts indica te the p rinter sta tus. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights To resolve the pro blem that is causing the lights to flash, click the ap propriate link.
Power lig ht is flas hing 1 Power light If the Power light is flashing, the printer is preparing t o print. The light stops flashing w h en the printer ha s received al l data. Resume light is flashing 1 Resume light If the Resum e light is flashing, check th e following conditio ns: • The printer mi ght be out of pa per.
Both Power and R esume lights ar e flashing The printer mi ght need to be restarted. 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and t h en press the Power button to restart the printer. Proceed to step 2 if th e lights continue to flash. 2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
If one or both Print Cartridge Sta tus lights are on and flashin g • The light on the le ft blinks when the tri-co lor print cartridge (on the le ft) is the problem, the light on the right blinks when the black cartridge (on the ri ght) is the problem.
• Solution 3: Clear the pri nt queue • Solution 4: Check the pr inter cabl e connection • Solution 5: Verify the pri nter dr iver confi guration • Solution 6: Check if the prin ter is paused o.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your comput er to clear the print queue. To clear the pri nt queue 1. Restart your comput er. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check t he print q ueue.
After reconn ecting the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting th e product through a USB hub, make sure the hub is turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting d irectly to your computer. 5. If the pr oduct does not start printing automati cally, start another print j o b.
6. Check the drive r listed in th e Driver drop-down menu to verif y that the product is using the correct dri ver. The name of your product should be listed as the driver. 7. If the wrong driver is selected, select the correct driver from the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the print queue man ually Solution: Man ually clear the pri n t queue. To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software applicatio n is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the software applicat ion is the problem. To verify the so ftware applicatio n 1. Close the sof tware application an d reopen it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software application.
To increase pri nter speed, close all unnecessary software program s when printing. Complex docume nts, graphics , or photos are prin ting Documents contai ning graphics or photos print more slowly than text documents.
NOTE: In the procedures b elow, the "p roblem" cartri dge is identified by the blin king light. The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print ca rtridge (on the left) is the problem and the light on the right blinks w hen the black cartrid ge (on the right) is the problem.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the erro r has been resolved, then there is a pro blem with the bl ack print cartridge. • If the error has not been resolved, then there is a problem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have i dentified the problem cart ridge, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with your printer. Compatible p r int cartridges are list ed in the reference guide that came with your p rinter. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selecti on number, inst all a new print cartridge.
Try the followi ng solutions: • Solution 1: Turn the po wer off an d on • Solution 2: Clear an y paper ja ms • Solution 3 : Move the printer carriag e • Solution 4: Verify the pow er source • Solution 5: Re move and reinstall the prin t cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the po wer off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move th e printer carriage Solution: If the printer carria ge is still stuck, try moving it as described in the followin g procedure. To move the pr inter carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power cord from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify the power so urce Solution: Verify t hat the printer is pro perly connected to a suitable power source . To verify the p ower source 1. Verify that the computer and the p r inter have the correct power plug s depending on your country/regio n.
5. Remove the rear access do or. Press the handle to the right, and th en pull out the door. 6. Remove the pap er jam from the back of the p rinter, and then replace th e rear access door securely.
• Use a different t ype of paper. • Do not mix paper ty pes in the inpu t tray Out of paper Try the followi ng solutions: • Solution 1: Make sure the pape r tray is no t empty • Solution 2: Ch.
3. If the product is not alre ady on, turn it on by pre ssing the Power button. 4. Remove the stack o f paper from the paper tray and veri fy that all the paper in the paper tray is the same size a nd type. 5. Replace any pape r that is ripped, dusty, wr inkled, or be nt.

If this di d not s olve th e issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 5: Cl ean the roller s Solution: Clean the rolle rs. Make sure you have the following materials avai lable: • Lint-free clot h, or any soft material that w ill not come apart or leave f ibers.
Printe r prints on mul tiple sheets at once If the print er prints on multiple she ets at once, check the following: • Paper weight • Paper might be loaded imp roperly Paper wei ght The printer mi ght print on multiple sheets of paper a t once if the paper is under the recommended pa per weight.
Tab Setting NOTE: For more information on enabling the maximum dpi mode, see Maximum dpi . Problems with borderless documents If you are havi ng problems with printi ng borderless documents and p hoto.
If the problem is not caused by the source image, fol low these steps: 1. Remove al l paper from the paper tray. 2. Load the photo paper correctly in the paper tray. 3. Verify that the paper guide fits firmly agai nst the edge of the paper. 4. Follow lo ading inst ructions for th e paper type.
If the printo ut has an unwante d border, try the f o llowing sol u tions: • Align the print cartri dges . • Open the Printer Pr operti es dialog box , click the Feature s tab , an d verify th at the selected paper size matche s both the paper size that the phot o is formatted f o r and the size of the p aper that is loaded in the printer.
HP recommen ds that you use genuine H P print cartridges. Genuine HP print cartridges are designed and tested with HP pr inters to help yo u easily produce gre at results, time a fter time. NOTE: HP cannot gu arantee the quality or reliability of non-HP supplies.
Solution 4: Check to see i f the product is in i nk-backup mo de Solution: Check to se e if the the p roduct is pri nting in i nk-backup mode , with on ly one print cartri dge installed. If the produ ct is in ink-backup mode, text and photo quality w ill differ fr om those pri nted when using al l print cartridges .
Ink is not filling th e text or graphics complete ly Try the following solutions if the in k is not fi lling the text or image completel y so that it appears that parts are mi ssing or blank.
Always make sure th e paper you are printing on is fla t. For best resu lts when printing images, use HP Adva nced Photo Paper. For more information, see: Store and handle pho to paper Cause: The w rong kind of pap e r was loaded in th e input tray. If this di d not s olve th e issue, try the n ext solution.
Solution 2: Check th e print quality setting Solution: Check th e quality setting. Use a hi gher quality set ting to in crease the amount of i nk used for printing. For more information, see: • Change the pri nt speed or quality • Maximu m dpi Cause: The print quality setting was set to low.
Solution 2: Check the pr int quality setting Solution: Check the quali ty setting. Use a higher quality sett ing to increase the amount of in k used for prin ting. For more information, see: • Change the pri nt speed or quality • Maximum dpi Cause: The prin t quality setting was set too l ow.
Printouts are faded or have dull colors Try the follow ing solutions if the colors in your printout are not as b right and inte nse as you expected. • Solution 1: Ch eck the print settings • Solution 2: Ch eck the paper type • Solution 3: Clean the pri nt cartridges Solution 1: Check the print settings Solution: Check th e print settings.
self-test report show s a problem, clean the pri n t cartridges. If the problem persist s, you might need to replace the print cartri dges. For more information, see Print a test page . Cause: The pri nt cartridges need ed to be cleaned o r there was insufficie nt ink.
Solution: HP reco mmends that you use HP Advanced Pa pers or any othe r paper type that is appropriate for the product. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat.
Solution 1: Pri nt on a page of plai n paper Solution: Print one or several pages of plain paper to soak up any exce ss ink in the product. To remove exces s ink using plain paper 1. Load several sheets of plain paper in the paper tray. 2. Wait five minutes.
Solution: Use TrueType or Ope nType fonts to ensure t hat the product is able to print smooth f onts. When selecting a font , look for the TrueType or OpenType icon. Some softwa re applicat ions offer custom fonts that have jagged edges when enlarged or print ed.
If parts of t he document are still missing , the printer settings might be o verridden by the software prog ram print settings. Select the appropriate print settings from within the software pro gram. Envelope is pr inted at an angl e Solution: 1. Slide the flap i nside the envelope before lo ading it in the print er.
