F irst- time setup Step 1 : Insert th e bat ter y T o insert a primary battery: 1. T urn the computer upside down on a flat surf ace, with the battery bay to ward you. 2. Slide the battery 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery release latches 2 automatically lock the battery into place.

4 T r oubl eshooting T roub leshooting resource s If you experience computer problems, perform these troubleshooting steps in the order provided until the problem is resolved: ■ Refer to “Quick troubleshooting, ” the next section in this chapter .
T r oubleshoot ing Q uic k troubl eshooting T he com pu ter is una bl e to star t up T o turn on the computer , press the po wer b utton. When the computer is turned on, the po wer light turns on. If the computer and the po wer light are not turned on when you press the po wer b utton, adequate po wer may not be av ailable to the computer .
Tr o u b l e s h o o t i n g T he com pu ter sc reen is bl ank If the computer is on b ut the screen is blank: the computer may be in the Sleep state or in Hibernation; the computer may not be set to display the image on the computer screen; or the display switch may not be functioning properly .
T r oubleshoot ing Soft war e is func tionin g abnorm all y Follo w these suggestions if the software becomes unresponsi ve or responds abnormally: ■ Restart the computer by clicking Start , clicking the arro w next to the Lock b utton, and then clicking Restart .

T r oubleshoot ing A n e xte rn al de vi ce i s n ot w o rki n g Follo w these suggestions if an ex ternal de vice does not function as expected: ■ T urn on the device as instructed in the de vice user guide. Some de vices may not be po wered by the computer , and must be turned on before the computer is turned on.
Tr o u b l e s h o o t i n g ■ If applicable, be sure that the wireless router (access point) is turned on and properly connected to the DSL or the cable modem. ■ Disconnect and then reconnect a ll cables, and turn the power of f and then back on.

A Conn ec t to t h e Intern et from y our h ome The computer includes hardware and softw are that allo ws you to connect to the Internet. Before you can access the Internet, you must choose an Internet service provider (ISP) and choose the type of Internet connection you want, such as broadband (wired or wireless) or dial-up.
Connec t to the Internet f r om y our home Using t he N e w Conn ec tion Wizard The Ne w Connection W izard works under the follo wing conditions: ■ Y ou already ha ve an account with an ISP . ■ Y ou ha ve a disc from an ISP . ■ Y ou do not ha ve an Internet account and w ould like to select an ISP from the list provided within the wizard.
Connect to the I nternet fr om y our home ■ WLAN —Internet connection through a WLAN requires broadband wired service with an ISP as well as a wireless router (purchased separately). T o learn about setting up wireless access, see the HP W eb site at http://www .
B B ac k u p and reco v er y Creating reco v er y disc s After setting up the computer for the f irst time, be sure to create a set of recov ery discs of the full factory image. The recov ery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recov er the operating system and software to f actory settings in case of system instability or failure.
Back up and r eco very T o create a set of recovery discs,: 1. Select Start > All Programs > HP Backup & Reco very > Backup & Recov ery Manager . 2. Click Next . 3. Click Create a set of r ecov ery discs (Recommended) , and then click Next .
Back up and reco very Back up su g ge sti on s ■ Create a set of recove ry discs using HP Backup & Recov ery Manager . ■ Create system recovery points using HP Backup & Reco very Manager , and periodically copy them to disc. ■ Store personal files in the Documents folder and back up these folders periodically .
Back up and r eco very B ac kin g up s pec ific f iles or folders Y ou can back up specif ic files or folders to the reco very partition on the hard dri ve, to an optional e xternal hard driv e, or to optical discs (CDs or D VDs). ✎ This process will take se veral minutes, depending on the f ile size and the speed of the computer .
