3 Setting up your computer ❑ Follow the steps in the setup document ation included with your computer. ❑ Place the computer so that all ventilation openings are unobstructed and cabling is not in a walkwa y or where it can be stepped on or dam aged by placing furniture on it.

Adjusting settings with onscreen display (game console models only) HP TouchSmart PCs with the game co nsole option include a n onscreen display (OSD) button on the right side of the computer, just above the volume buttons. 1. Press the display menu button on the right si de of the com puter.
Your HP TouchSmart PC fea tures audio connector s (headphone and Audio Out ) that are optimized for Beats Audio™ headphone s and external audio systems (p u rchased separately). Select HP TouchSmar t PC models also include four Bea ts-optimized in ternal speakers and a Beats toggle button on the keyboard.
Locate the HP TouchSmart PC in the room to minimi ze glare from the screen. You ca n also reduce glare by tilting the screen. The HP TouchSmart screen can be used as an input devic e; therefore, the comp uter should be placed so that your shoulders and neck a re comfortable.
4 Troubleshooting and maintenance Refer to the documentation prov ided by the product manufacturer for in formati on about peripheral-spe cific problems, such as issues with a printer. The following sections present some iss ues you might en counter while installing, starting up, or usin g y our computer and possible solutions.
Power Symptom Possible solution Error message: Invalid system disk or N on- System disk or Disk error. When drive activity stops, re move the disc, and then press the space bar on the keyboard. The computer should start up. Computer does not tur n off when the Power button is pressed.
Keyboard and mouse (with cable) Symptom Possible solution Keyboard commands and typing are not recognized by th e computer. Use the mouse to tu rn off the compute r, unpl ug and reconnect the keyboard to the back of your computer, an d then restart your computer.
Symptom Possible solution Cursor responds slowly, moves only verti cally o r horizont ally, or does not track smoothly. For a mouse with a roller ba ll: ● Clean the roller ball: Remove the roller ball cover from bottom of mouse (rotate it counterclockwise), remove the ball, and clean it by using a damp, lint-fr ee cloth (not paper).
Keyboard and mouse (wireless) Symptom Possible solution Wireless keyboard or mouse d oes not work or is not detected. ● Ensure that you are using the wireless keyboard or wireless mouse within range of the receiver, approximately 10 meter s (32 feet) for normal use, and within 30 cm (1 2 inches) during initial setup or for re-synchronization.
Speakers and sound Symptom Possible solution Volume is very low or unsatisfactory. Ensure that you connected the speakers to the Audio Out connector on the back of the computer.
Symptom Possible solution Cannot connect to the Internet. For Windows 7: 1. Tap the Start button, ta p Control Panel , tap Action Center , and then tap Troubleshooting . 2. Under Network and Internet , tap Connect to the Internet . Verify that you ar e using the prop er cabl es for your In ternet connection type.
Symptom Possible Soluti on No Signal message appears on the display. ● Ensure that the gaming de vice is on. ● Make sure the HDMI cable is conne cted fr om the gaming de vice to the computer. Audio drops when a video game is being played. ● The system is on Mute.
Complete the following pr ocedure to update a d river, or to revert to an earlie r version of the driver if the new one does not solve your problem: 1. Tap the Start button. 2. Type Device Manager into the Start Search box, a nd then tap Device Manager to open the Device Manager window.
To add restore points manu ally: 1. Close all open programs. 2. Tap the Start button, ta p Computer , tap Properties , and then ta p System protection . 3. Under Protection Settings , ta p the disk for which you want to create a re store point. 4. Tap Create , and then follow the onscreen instructions.
To reinstall a program using th e Recovery Manager: 1. Tap the Start button, ta p All Progr ams , tap Recovery Manager, and th en tap Recovery Manager . 2. Tap Softw are Pro gram Rein stallat ion , and then tap Next at the Welcome screen. 3. Choose the program you want to install, tap Next , and follow the on screen instructions.
System Recovery In time, your system might stil l get bogged down, dep ending on the computer usage. Use System Recovery to wipe your Windows operating system installatio n clean, restoring it to the orig inal configurat ion when you first st arted your system.
Cleaning the keyboar d and mouse When cleaning the keyboard ke ys, use a low setting on a battery-power ed vacuum cleaner, to avoid removing key cap s and springs. 1. Vacuum between the keys of the keybo ard and along the grooves. 2. Use a clean, dry cloth and iso propyl (rubbing) alcohol to clea n buildup on the keyboard keys and along its edges.
NOTE: Some features might not be available on systems that are shipped without a version of Microsoft Windows. You must choose one of the following methods to p erform a System Recovery: ● Recovery Image — Run the System Recovery from a recovery ima ge stored on your hard disk drive.
If the computer is working an d Windows 7 is respon ding, use these st eps to perform a System Recovery. 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Disconnect all peripheral devices fro m the computer except the keyboard and mou se. 3. Turn on the computer. 4. Tap the Start button, ta p All Progr ams , tap Recovery Manager , and then ta p Recovery Manager .
If Windows 7 is not resp onding, but the co mputer is work ing, follo w these steps to perform a System Recovery. 1. Turn off the computer. If necessary, press and hol d the Power button until the computer turn s off. 2. Disconnect all peripheral devices fro m the computer, except the keyboard and mouse.
To perform a System Recove ry using recovery media: 1. If the computer is wo rking, create a backup DVD, or backup USB flash drive, co ntaining all the data files you want to save, and then re move the backup media from the computer.
Choosing recovery media ● To create recovery discs, your computer must have a DVD writer, and you must use only high-quality blank DVD+R or DVD-R discs. NOTE: You cannot use CDs or DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+R DL, or DVD-R DL discs to create recovery discs.
