4 Theory of operation Chapter contents ● Basic operation ● Internal com ponents ● Timing ● Print cartridge memory system ENWW Chapter conten ts 45.
Basic operation This chapter presents an overview of the relationships among major compone nts in the device, and includes a deta iled discussion of the image-formation system.
Engine control unit (ECU) The ECU coordinates all device functions, accordin g to commands that the fo rmatter sends. It drives the laser/scanner system, the image formation system, and the pickup/fe ed/delivery system.
Figure 4-3 Engine control system circuit diagram 48 Chapter 4 The ory of operation ENWW.
Fuser heater control circuit ECU Figure 4 -4 Low-voltage power supply circuit diagra m ENWW Basic operation 49.
Pickup/feed/delivery system The pickup/feed/delivery system consists of several types of feed rollers and sensors. The ECU uses two motors and two solenoids to drive the rollers. Three media-detection senso rs detect media as it passes through the device.
Laser/scanner system The laser/scanner system receives video signals from the ECU and the formatter and converts the signals into l atent images on the photosensiti ve drum.
Image-formation system Laser printing requi res the interaction of several diff erent techn ologies, including electronics, optics, an d electrophotograph ics, to provide a printed page. Figure 4-7 Print cartridge diagram Each process functions i ndependently and must be co ordinated with the other d evice processes.
Step 1: Primary charging DC and AC biases are appli ed to the primary charging roller, which transfers a uniform ne gative potential to the photosensitive drum. Figure 4 -9 Primary charging Step 2: Laser beam exposure The laser beam scans the photosensitive drum to ne utralize neg ative charges on parts of the drum.
Toner acquires a nega tive charge through friction fr om the developing cylind er and the blade. When the negatively charged toner come s in contact with the drum, the toner adhere s to the electrostatic latent image. The image on the drum becomes visible because of the toner.
Figure 4 -13 Fusing Step 7: Drum cleaning The cleaning blade scrapes the residua l toner off of the photosensitive drum and deposits it into the waste toner case.

Print cartridge memory system The memory tag is a nonvolatile memory built into the print cartridge. The cartrid ge usage condition is detected as the engi ne controller reads or writes the data stored on the memory tag . The engine controller renews the information in the prescrib ed timing and reads or wr ites it from or to th e memory tag.
