1 Introduction Safety precautions Before using your printer, read th e following safety precautions to make su re you use the equipment safely. General safety guidelines ● Refer to installa tion instructions bef ore connecting th e printer to th e supply.
To avoid the risk of electric shock: ● Do not attempt to disma ntle the drying and curi ng modules or the electrical control cabinet. ● Do not remove or open any othe r closed system covers or plugs. ● Do not insert objects thro ugh slots in the printer.
● Avoid standing close to the fans, which could cause injury and could also affect print quality (by obstructing the air flow). ● Do not touch gears or movi ng rolls during printing. Heavy substrate hazard Special care must be t aken to avoid persona l injury when han dling heavy subst rates.
Label Explanation See installation instructions before connecting to the supply. Ensure that the input voltage is within the printer's rated voltage range. The printer requires two dedicated lines, each protected by a branch circuit breaker according to the ratin g of the wall socket outlet.

3 Basic setup options Printer setup options Turn the printer on and off To turn on the printer, ensure that the power switch at the rear of th e printer is turned on, ensure that the residual curr ent circuit breakers ar e in the up position , then press th e Power button on the front panel.
Restart the printer In some circumstances you may be advised to restart the printer. Pl ease proceed as follo ws: 1. Press the Power button on the front panel to tu rn the pr inter off. Wai t a few moments, and then press the Power button again. This sh ould restart the printer.
Request e-mail notification of s pecific error conditi ons 1. In the Embedded Web Server, go to the E-mail server page on the Setup tab and ensure that the following fields are correctly filled in: ● SMTP server .

4 Handle the substrate Overview You can print on a wide variety of printing materia ls, a ll of which are referred to in this guide as substrates. Use substrate Choosing the correct substrate for your ne eds is an essential step in ensuring good print quality.
CAUTION: Remo ving the substrate from the printer ma n ually without using the front pane l could damage the printer. Do thi s only when necessary to clear a substrate jam.
3. Remove the first end of the spindle from the right side of the printer, and then move the spindle to the right in order to extract the ot her e nd. Do not insert your finger s into the spindle supp orts during the removal process. The spindle h as a stop at each end to keep the ro ll in position.
6. Rest the roll of substra te that you want to load on the lo ading table. If the roll is long and heavy, you may need two p eople to handle it. 7. Slide the spindle into the roll. 8. The right stop of the spindle has two positions: one for rolls of the printer' s maximum width, and another for narrower rolls.
9. Put the blue stop on to the u pper end of the spindl e, and push it towards the end of the roll. 10. Slide the lever-lock to the locked position. 11. Lift the loading table to ea se the spindle into th e printer. CAUTION : To avoid trapping your fingers, do not push the roll with your hands.
TIP: To load a roll of textile material, cut a strip of another substra te of a similar width to the te xtile and around 0.5 m in leng th. Polyester (b acklit) substrates a re the best fo r this purpose because of th eir stiffness. Lay this strip of substrate on top of th e leading edge of the textile and loa d the two together as described below.
NOTE: You can specify th e maximum permitted amount of ske w at the front panel: se lect the icon, then select Substrate handling options > Max skew setting . 5. Wait until the substrate e mer ges from the printer, as shown in the following graph ic.
Unload a roll from the printer If you used the take-up reel during pr inting, unload the p rinted roll from the take-up reel before attemp ting to remove t he roll fr om the printer.
3. Pull out the substrate fro m the front of the printe r. 4. Remove the empty spindle from the printer, pulling out the end on the right side of the printer first. Do not inse rt your fi ngers into th e sp indle sup ports during the removal process. 5.
2. If you want to lo ad the take-up reel n ow, select Load take-up reel now on the fro nt panel. If you want to load the take-up reel du ring printing, select L oad it during printing on the front pan el. 3. Make sure that the load ing table is in its upright positio n.
6. Remove the blue stop from the spindle. 7. Load the core onto the take-up reel spindle. 8. Replace the blue stop on the spindle. 9. Load the take-u p reel spindle into the prin ter by pushing firmly on both e nds of the spindle.
10. Press the OK button on th e front panel, and th en select a winding directio n. The printer advances the substrate. Make sure th at the substrate passes in front of the lo ading table, as shown. 11. Pull the substrate taut to the position sho wn in the following fi gure.
12. Press the OK button on the fro nt panel. The printer advances th e substrate. 13. Assemble a loop -shaping core by ma tching the shap e-coded and color-coded le ngths of plast ic tubing. The loo p-shaping core must be the same width as the su bstrate that yo u are using.
15. Carefully insert the loop-shapi ng core. NOTE: Make sure that you insert the loop-shapin g core. The take-up re el will not function correctly without it. The loop-shapin g core must ha ve end caps. Make sure that the end caps extend over the edges of the substrate.
NOTE: If you want to move the printer, first remove the take-up reel sensor and cable housing u nit from the foot of the printe r stand. Place the sensor and cable housin g unit on the printer stand crossbar and use the blue plastic screw to affix the housing unit to the leg of the stand, as show n, while the printer is being moved.
4. Remove the loop-shaping core. 5. Use the win ding button on the take-u p reel moto r to wind t he excess substra te around th e take-up reel spindle. 6. Press the OK button on the fron t panel. 7. Use the winding button on the take-up reel motor to wind the remainder of the sub strate around the take-up reel spindle.
9. Unlock the take-up reel spindle by pushing the spindle leve r to its uppermost position. 10. Remove the roll from the printer, pulling out the end on the right side of th e printer first. Do not insert your fingers into the spindl e supports during the removal p rocess.
● Allow all substrates to adapt to room conditions out of the packaging for 2 4 hours before printing. ● Handle film and glossy substrates by the edges or wear cotton gloves. Skin oils can be transferred to the substrate, leaving fingerprint marks.
9. Check the qu antity of ink and correc t it if there is too much; see Check the ink quantity on page 37 . The print may not be completely dry at this stage; this is normal an d not a problem. 10. After a little time, the print should be completely dry.

Setting Description If too low If t oo high Input tension Te nsion is applied to the substrate from the input spindle. It needs to be constant over the full width of the substrate, thus substrate load is a critical operation. The substrate skews and may become increasin gly wrinkled in the printing zone.
Setting Description If too low If too high Cool-down curing temperature offset The saf e temper ature at w hich the substrate can be under the curing module without being damaged. At the end of a job, the substrate is not stopped until this temperature is reached.
Check the ink quantity Check the p rinted chart in the following ways. 1. Too much ink: There are several possib le symptoms of this problem. ● The last two or three scales of the plot look the same.
● Coalescence, grain. Try reducing the amount of ink in your RIP software, then reprint the chart and check again. Also consider the follo wing tips.
Faster printing The obvious way to increase speed is to reduce the number of print passes, alth ough this will tend to reduce print quality . Bear in mind the fo llowing consid erations. ● With fewer than 10 pa sses, you may see an increase i n grain.
5 Handle the ink system Ink system components Ink cartridges The printer's six ink cartridges provide magenta, ligh t magenta, black, yel low, light cyan and cyan ink to the printheads. Each ca rtridge has a capacity of 775 ml. Ink cartridges require no maintenanc e or cleaning.
Although it is possible to use re filled or non-HP ink ca rtridges, either choi ce has several serious disadvantages: ● There is some risk of damaging the printer. In this case the printer warranty will not be valid for any printer repairs tha t are related to the cartri dge , nor fo r any problems due to ink contami nation.
CAUTION: Avo id touching pins, leads, and ci rcuitry when handling in k cartridges because these elements are se nsitive to electrostatic dischar ge . Such devices are called ESD-sensitive devices. See Glossary on pag e 66 . Electrostatic discharges are one of the main ha zards to electron ics products.
Ink system tips For best results, a lways follow these guidel ines: ● Install the ink ca rtridges, printhe ads and pr inthead cleani ng cartridge be fore the warra nty-ends date, which is p rinted on the product label and packaging. NOTE: The ink cartridges normally expire some time after the wa rranty ends.
● The ink cartridge is empty or faulty, a nd you must replace it to continue printi ng. CAUTION: T he procedure to remove an in k cartridge mu st be initi ated from the front panel . Do not remove an ink cartridge u ntil the front panel prompts you.
3. Pull the blue tab d own and then pull it ou twards, towards you. 4. The cartridge comes out, i n its drawer. 5. Lift the cartridge out of its drawer. NOTE: Avoid touching the end of the cartridge that is inserted into the prin ter, because t he connection might be coated with ink.
6. The front-panel displa y identifies the missing ink cartridg e. Insert an in k cartridge 1. Pick up the new ink cartri dge and find the label that identifies the i nk color. Hold the ink cartridge so that you can see the label at th e top of the side that is facing you .
5. Slide the drawer and ca rtridge into the slot until th ey lock into position. If you have di fficulty, see the Mainte nance and troublesho oting guide .
Remove a printhead 1. On the printer's fron t panel, select the icon, and then select Replace printhead s . 2. The carriage move s to the removal position.
5. Pull up and release the latch on top of the carriage. 6. Lift up the cover. This provides ac cess to the printheads. 7. To remove a printhead , lift up the blue ha ndle.
9. Gently pull the b lue handle upward until th e printhead is released from the carriage. CAUTION: Do not pull abru ptly. That action can damage the printhead. 10. The front-panel displa y identifies the missing printh ead. Insert a printhea d 1. If the printhea d is new, shak e it vigorously befo re removing the protective caps.
2. Remove the or ange protective caps by p ulling them down . 3. The printhead is designed to prevent you from acci dentally inserting it into th e wrong slot. Check that the colored label on the printhead matches the colore d label of the carriage slot into which the printhead is to be inserted.
6. Insert all of the other printhead s that need to be installed, and clo se the carriage cover. 7. Make sure that the end of the la tch catches th e wire loop on the near side of the carriage.
9. Close and lock th e printer window. 10. The front-panel display confirms th at all of the pr intheads are correctly inserted. The printer starts checking and pre paring the printh eads. The defa ult routine process, when all prin theads are changed, takes up to 18 minutes.
2. The printhead clean ing cartridge is located in a slot underneath the front pane l, at the front of the printer. Open the doo r. 3. The printhead cleaning cartridg e has a handle on the front. To remove the cartridge, press inward and upward as indicated by the arrow, until the cartridge is released.
Insert the p rinthead cleaning cartridge 1. Remove the plastic cove r from the new printh ead cleaning cartridge. 2. Insert the printhead cleaning cartridge into t he slot, in the direction in dicated by the arrow.
4. When you have inserted th e printhead cleaning cartrid ge into the printer, close the door. NOTE: The printer needs all the ink cartridges, printheads an d printhead cleaning cartri dge to be installed before it can continue. 5. If no substrate is loaded, the front panel i nstructs you to load some.

7. Close and lock the wind ow. Replace the printhead cleaning con tainer CAUTION: Yo u are recommended to wea r gloves. 1. Remove the printhead clean ing container. 2. Insert the new printhead cleaning container. 3. Ensure that the tube is pointing into the center of the con tainer.

6 Print options Printer states The printer may be in any one of the following states; some o f them require wa iting. ● Ready (cold) : The printer is powered on but has not p rinted yet, and the heaters are no t turned on. ● Preparing t o print : The printer is warming up the heaters a nd preparing the printhe ads to print.
Request the printer's internal prints The internal prints provide various kinds of informatio n a bout your printer. Re quest these prints from th e front panel, without using a computer. Before requesting any in ternal print, make su re that substrate is loaded and that the Re ady message appears on the front-pan el display.

Glossary Airflow Air is blown throug h the printing zone to speed up the drying proce ss. Too much or too little airflow may cause print quality defects. Back tension The backwards tension applied to the su bstrate by the inpu t spindle, which must be consta nt across the width of the substrate.
The Internatio nal Color Consortium, a gr oup of companies that have agreed on a common standard fo r color profiles. Ink density The relative amount of ink that is depos ited on the substrate per unit of area. IP address A unique identifier that identifies a particular node on a TC P/IP network.
