1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the printe r buttons to turn the print er on and off, cancel a print job, and restart a job. The printer light s give you visual cues about the status of the printer.
Power button a nd ligh t Use the Power button to turn the p rinter on and off. It can take a few secon ds for the printer to tur n on after you pre ss the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flashes w hen the printer is processing. CAUTION: Always use the Power button to turn the printer on and off.
Resume butto n and light The Resume light fl ashes when an action is required, such as loading paper or cleari ng a paper jam. When t he problem is solved, press the Resume button to continue pri nting. 1 Resume button and light Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cartridge Stat us lights are located on the cont rol panel.
1 Tri-color print cartridge light 2 Black print cartridge light 1. The left status ligh t represents the tri-color print cartridge, wh ich is installed in the left side of the print ca rtridge carriage. • The light is on a nd solid when the tri-color pr int cartridge is low on ink.
2. Pull out the tr ay extension. 3. If you are printing in the Fa st Draft mode, fold out the t ray extension stop. Use the p aper tray Print on different sizes of media by sliding the pape r guide to the right or to the left. The printer deposits pri nted pages on the top of the p aper tray.
Fold the pa per tray To fold the paper tray 1. Remove pap er or other me dia from th e paper tray . 2. If the tray extensio n stop is folded out, fold it back in.
Print cartridges Two print cartridges can b e used with the printer. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-color pr int ca rtridge NOTE: Your printer might be packaged with only a t ri-color print cartridge. For better results, install a b lack print cartridge in addition to the tri-color print cartridge .

Ink-backup mode ou tput Printing in ink-backup mod e slows the printer and affects the quality of printouts. Installed print cartridge Result Black print cartridge Colors print as grayscale. Tri-color print cartridge Colors print but black is grayed and is not a true black.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connect s to the computer with a universal serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 compatible cable. For instructions ab out connecting the printer with a USB cable, se e the Setup Guide that came with the prin ter.
5 Print photos The printer software o ffers several features that make pri nting digital photos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn ho w to print p hotos Print borderless photos . Prepare to print 1. Slide the paper guide all the way to the left. 2. Verify that the photo paper is flat. 3. Place the phot o paper in the right side of t he tray. The side to be prin ted on should face down and the sho rt edge should point towards the printer.
Guidelines • For maximum fade resistan ce, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. • Verify that th e plain pa per that you are using is flat. • Do not excee d the paper tray capacity: 80 sh eets of paper. Prepare to print 1. Slide the paper g uide all the way to the l eft.
4. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Photo Printin g-with white borders , and t hen select the fol lowing options: • Print Quality : Normal or Best NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advanced tab, and then se lect Enabled from the Maximum dpi drop-down list.
Print NOTE: If your software pro gram includes a photo printing fe ature, follow the instructions that ar e provided with the software program. Otherwise, follow these instructions. 1. Open the photo in a so ftware program that allows editing, such as HP Photosmart Software.

Print greeting cards Greeting cards • Unfold prefol ded cards, and then place the m in the paper tray. • For great results, use H P Greeting Card Paper. • Do not exceed the paper tray capacity: 20 cards. Prepare to print 1. Slide the paper guide all the way to the left.

7 Printing tips Learn how to use printing shortcuts, sele ct a paper type, change the print resolution, se t the page orde r, print multiple page s on a single sheet, previ ew a document, and use two- sided printin g. Click any of the foll owing links: Check your prin ter • Connect the printer .
NOTE: When you select a p rinting shortcut the appropria te printing options are automatically displayed . You can leave them as is or change them. This secti on contains the followin g topics: • Us.
3. In the Printing Shor tcuts list , click the pri nting sh ortcut th at you want to delete . 4. Click Delete . The printing short cut is removed from the list. NOTE: Only the shortcut s that you have created can be deleted. The original HP shortcuts cannot be deleted.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up t o 16 pages on a single sheet of pa per. 12 4 3 To print multiple pages on a sing le sheet of paper 1.
4. In the Print In Grayscale drop-down list, se lect from the following options: • High Quality : uses all the avai lable colors to print your photo in grayscale. This creates smooth an d natural shades of gra y. • Black Ink Only : uses black ink to print your ph oto in grayscale.
To previ ew a printe d docume nt 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show preview before pr inting check box. 4. Select any other print sett ings that you want, and then click OK . Before the documen t prints, a preview is disp layed.
Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskjet automatically chooses a p rint quality and speed se tting depending on the paper type se tting you select. You can also chan ge the print quality setti ng to customize the speed a nd quality of the print proce ss.
Printing in maximum dpi takes longer than printing with other setti ngs and requires a large amount of disk spa ce. To print in Ma ximum dpi mo de 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Advan ced tab. 3. In the Printer Features area, select En abled from the Maximum dpi drop-down list.
To print a two-sided document with a tablet binding 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-si ded printing drop-dow n list, click Manual . 4. Select the foll ow ing check boxes: • Flip Pages Up • Preserve L ayout 5.
To print a Web page 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web browser, cli ck Print . TIP: For best results, select HP Smart Web Printing on the File menu. A check mark appears whe n it is selected. The Print dialog box appears.
8 Printer software • Make the HP Deskj et the default printer • Set default print settin gs • Printer Properties d ialog box • What's This? help • Download pri nter software upd ates Make the HP Deskjet the default printer You can set the HP D eskjet as the default pri nter to use from any soft ware program.
To save time when printing , set the default print settings t o options that you use often. That way, you do not have t o specify the options every time you use the p rinter. To change th e default p rint setting s 1. Double-click the HP Dig ital Imaging Monitor icon on the right side of the Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Printer Properties dialog box can va ry depending on the software progr am you are using. What's This? help Use the What's This ? help to learn about t he features that you see on the Printer Properties dialog box.

Choose cartr idge comb inations for best results • Text, graphics, and co lor photos: Combine tri -color and black print cartridges. • Metallic accents: Combine tri-co lor and me tallic prin t cartridges. NOTE: Metallic print cart ridges are available in select coun tries/regions.
4. Slide the print ca rtridge out of th e carriage. 1 Press the Power button 2 Open the printer cover 3 Push down on the print ca rtridge 4 Slide the print cartridge out of the carriage 5. Remove the replacement print cartri dge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape.
1 Ink nozzles 2 Copper contacts 6. Slide the print cartri dge firmly into the carriage at a sl ight upward angle until you feel resistance. 7. Push the cartridge into the carriage. You hear a snap when the print cartridge is correctly posi tioned. 8. Close the prin ter cover.
3. Click Align the Print Cartridges . 4. Click Align , and th en follow the onscreen instru ctions. The HP Deskjet pri nts a test page, aligns the p rint cartridges, and calibrat es the printer.
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet eject s ink onto the paper in a fine mist , ink smudges will eventually appear. To remove smudges, stai ns, or dried ink from the ex terior 1. Turn off the HP Deskjet, and then disconnect the power cord.
To prepare to clean 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until t he print cartridge ca rriage moves to the right si de of the HP De skjet and is idle and qu iet. 3. Remove the print cartridg es and place them on a pi ece of paper, with the copper st rips facing up.
• When you remove a print cartridge from the printer, store it in an airtight plastic container to prote ct your print cartridge and to preven t the ink from drying out. • Keep all unused print cartridges in their original seale d packages until they are needed.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartridg e reorder number, see the printed docume ntation that came with the HP Deskjet . You can also use the software that came wi th the HP Deskjet to fin d out the reorder number for the prin t cartridge.

Print cartridge p roblem message The printer cannot print if the print cartridges are faulty, or if th ey are not installed properly. If you receive a message stating there is a prob lem with a print cartridge, follow the instructions in Resolving print cartridge error m essages to resolve the problem.
Original HP ink de pleted Solution: Follow the prom pts on the computer screen to contin ue or replace the indicated print cartrid ges. For more informati on, see Replace print cart ridges . Ink levels might not be available for t he indicated print cartridges.
removed from each print cart ridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridge contacts, the pr inter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is inst alled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Pri n ters folder or from the prin ter icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect all ap plications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft Word. To set the paper size in Microso ft Word 1.
Installation progr am stops Cause: If the installation progra m stops when it looks for new hardware, one of the following issues is causing a communication problem: • The USB cable is old or defecti ve. • Software, such as an antivirus program, is run ning.
To resolve the pr oblem 1. Disconnect the USB ca ble from the printer. 2. Disconnect the power cord f rom the printer. 3. Wait approximat ely 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the power cord t o the printer. 5. Reconnect the USB cable to the printer. 6. If the “Unknow n Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The printe r lights in dicate th e printer sta tus. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights To resolve the problem t hat is causing the lights to flash , click the appropriate link.
Power light is flashi ng 1 Power light If the Power light is flashi ng, the printer is preparing to print. The ligh t stops flashing when the printer has received all data. Resume l ight is flashing 1 Resume l ight If the Resume li ght is flashing, check the f ollowing conditions: • The printer might be out of paper.
Both Power and R esume light s are flashi ng The printer might need to be restarted. 1. Press the Power button to turn off th e printer, and then press the Power button to restart the pri nter. Proceed to step 2 if the l ights continue to flash. 2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
If one or both Print Cartridge Stat us lights are on and flashing • The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print cartridge (on the left ) is the problem, the light on the right blinks when the bl ack cartridge (on the right ) is the problem.
• Solution 3: Cl ear the print queue • Solution 4: C heck the printer cable co nnection • Solution 5: Verify the printer d river confi guration • Solution 6: Ch eck if the printer is paused or.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your computer to clear the print queue. To clear the print qu eue 1. Restart your computer. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check the p rint queue.
After reconnecti ng the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting the pro duct through a USB hub, make sure t he hub is turned on. If th e hub is on, try connecting direct ly to your computer. 5. If the produ ct does not start printing automati cally, start another print job .
6. Check the driver listed in the Driver drop-down menu to ve rify that the product is using the c orrect driver. The name of your prod uct should be listed as the d river. 7. If the wrong drive r is selected, select the correct driver fro m the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the p rint queue manually Solution: Manual ly clear the print queue. To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software application is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the soft ware application is the problem. To verify the softwar e application 1. Close the soft ware application and re open it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software a pplication.
To increase printe r speed, close all unnecessary softwa re programs when printing. Complex documents, graphics, or photos are prin ting Documents containi ng graphics or photos print more sl owly than text docume nts.
NOTE: In the procedures belo w, the "problem" cartri dge is identified by the blinking light. The light on the left bl inks when the tri-color print ca rtridge (on the left) is the problem and the light on t he right blinks when the black cartrid ge (on the right) is the problem.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the error has b een resolved, then there is a proble m with the black print cartridge. • If the error has not be en resolved, then there is a prob lem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have iden tified the problem cartridg e, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure i t is compatible wi th your printer. Compatible print cartridges are listed in the ref erence guide that ca me with your printer. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selection n umber, install a new prin t cartridge.
Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1 : Turn th e power off and on • Solution 2 : Clear any pa per jams • Solution 3: Move the printer carriage • Solution 4 : Verify th e power source • Solution 5: Remove and reinstall the print cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the pow er off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move the pr inter carriage Solution: If the printer carriage i s still stuck, try moving it as described in t he following pro cedure. To move the printe r carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power co rd from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify th e power source Solution: Verify that the printer is properly connected to a suitable power source. To verify the powe r source 1. Verify that the compu ter and the printer have the co rrect power plugs depending on your country/region.
5. Remove the rear access door. Press th e handle to the right, and then pull out the door. 6. Remove the pap er jam from the back of the pr inter, and then replace the rear access door securely.
• Use a different t ype of paper. • Do not mix paper type s in the input tray Out of paper Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1: Make sure the paper tray is n ot empty • Solution 2 : Che.
3. If the product is not already o n, turn it on by pressing the Power button. 4. Remove the stack of p aper from the paper tray and verify th at all the paper in the paper tray is the same size and t ype. 5. Replace any paper tha t is ripped, dusty, wrinkl ed, or bent.

If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution. Solution 5: Clea n the rollers Solution: Clean the roller s. Make sure you have the f ollowing materials availa ble: • Lint-free clot h, or any soft material that wi ll not come apart or leave fib ers.
Printe r prints on mult iple sheets at on ce If the printer pri nts on multiple sheets at once, check the fo llowing: • Paper weight • Paper might be loaded impr operly Paper weig ht The printer might print on multiple sheets of paper at on ce if the paper is under the recommended pape r weight.
Tab Setting NOTE: For more information on enabling the maximum dpi mode, see Maximum dpi . Problems with borderless documents If you are having problems with printing borderless documents and phot os,.
If the problem is no t caused by the source image, follow th ese steps: 1. Remove all paper from the pap er tray. 2. Load the photo pap er correctly in the paper tray. 3. Verify that the paper guide fits firmly against the edge of the paper. 4. Follow load ing instructions for the paper type.
If the printout has an unwanted border, try the fol lowing solutions: • Align the print cartridg es . • Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x , click the Features t ab, and ve rify that th e selected paper size matches bot h the paper size that the photo i s formatted for and the size of the paper th at is loaded in the printer.
HP recommends th at you use genuine HP print cartridges. G enuine HP print cartridges are designe d and tested with HP pr inters to help you easily produce great results, ti me afte r time. NOTE: HP cannot guaran tee the quality or rel iability of non-HP supplies.
Solution 4: Check to see if the pr oduct is in ink-backup mode Solution: Check to see i f the the produ ct is printing in ink-backup mode , with only one print cartridg e installed. If the product is i n ink-backup mode, text and pho to quality will differ from those printed when using all print cartridges.
Ink is not filling the tex t or graphics completely Try the following solutio ns if the ink is not fi lling the text or image completely so that it appears that parts are missi ng or blank.
Always make sure the p aper you are printing on is flat. For best results when prin ting images, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. For more information, see: Store and handle photo paper Cause: The wrong kind of paper was loaded in th e input tray. If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution.
Solution 2: Check th e print quality setting Solution: Check the qu ality setting. Use a high er quality setting to incre ase the amount of ink used for printing. For more information, see: • Change the pri nt speed or quality • Maximu m dpi Cause: The print quality setting wa s set to low.
Solution 2: Check the print q uality setting Solution: Check the quality sett ing. Use a higher quality settin g to increase the amount of ink us ed for printing. For more information, see: • Change the print speed or quality • Maximum dpi Cause: The print qu ality setting was set too low .
Printouts are fade d or have dull colors Try the followi ng solutions if the colors in your printo ut are not as bright and intense as you expected. • Solution 1: Check th e print settings • Solution 2: Ch eck the paper type • Solution 3: Cl ean the print cartridges Solution 1: Check the print settings Solution: Check the pri nt settings.
self-test report shows a pro blem, clean the print cartridges. If t he problem persists, you might need to replace the prin t cartridges. For more information, see Print a test page . Cause: The print cartridges needed to be cleaned or there was insufficient ink.
Solution: HP recomme nds that you use HP Advanced Pape rs or any other paper type that is ap propriate for the product. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat.
Solution 1: Print o n a page of plain paper Solution: Print one or several pag es of plain paper to soak up any excess ink in the product. To remove exces s ink using plain paper 1. Load several shee ts of plain paper in the paper tray. 2. Wait five minutes.
Solution: Use TrueT ype or OpenType fonts to ensure t hat the product is able to print smooth f onts. When selecting a font , look for the TrueType or OpenType icon . Some software applications offer custom fonts that have jagged e dges when enlarged or printed .
If parts of t he document are still missing, th e printer settings might be ov erridden by the software program p rint settings. Select the appr opriate print settings from within the software program . Envelope is printe d at an an gle Solution: 1. Slide the flap insid e the envelope before loadi ng it in the printer.
