6 Color management ● What is color? ● The problem: color in the computer wo rld ● The solution: color ma nagement ● Color and your p rinter ● A summary of the color ma nagement process ● C.
What is color? We see the world aroun d us as steeped in color, whe r e col or is in the first instance simply an asp ect of how we experience our e nvironment. Color is ther efore subjective. Upon further in spection we find that our color expe riences are closely rela ted to brain activity that is triggered by signals sent to it by our eyes.
To control the out put of color imaging device s, the following colo r spaces are normally use d: ● RGB (Red, G reen an d Blue) is the color sp ace typically us ed for additive devices.
1. All colors 2. Computer monito r gamut 3. CMYK press gamut Finally, there are some color spaces that ar e no t device-depen dent, but instead re present how a viewer sees colors, su ch as CIE Lab or CIECAM02 defined by the CI E (Commission Internationa le de l’Éclairage).
● CMS: CMS stands for Color Management System. It is the application that conve rts the color information stored in the inp ut image, which has the co lor space defined by a source p rofile, into an output image th at has the color space specif ied by a destination p rofile.
generate an RGB ICC p rofile, describing its color be havior for the paper that was loaded at the time of measuring . ● CMYK mode: ◦ SWOP: abbreviation of “Specification s for Web Offset Publica.
A summary of the color management process To get the accurate and consistent colors that you want, you shou ld follow these steps for each paper type that you us e. 1. If your paper ty pe is not alread y known to the p rinter, add it to th e printer's list of know n papers.
Color calibration Color calibra tion enables your p rinter to produce cons istent colors with th e particular printheads, i nks and paper type th at you are using, and und er your particular environment al conditions.
The calibrati on process is fully automatic and can be performed unattended after you have loaded paper of the type you wish to calibrate—which should be A4, Letter or any large r size. The process takes about 8–1 0 minutes and consists of the following steps.
In order to print accurate colors, it is necessary to convert the color val ues in your files to the color values that will pro duce the correct colors from your printer, your inks an d your paper. An ICC color profile is a descri ption of a printer, ink and p aper combination that contains a ll the information neede d for these color conversions.
NOTE: Chart measurement may not be successful if you load the chart as a single shee t with skew chec king disabled . 4. From the measurements ma de by the spectrophot o meter, the printer calculates the ICC profile for your printer, inks a nd paper type.
ColorSync can be selected u nder Mac OS X 10.4 from the Color Options pa nel, then select Use Embedded (ICC/ColorSync) from the Source Profile drop -down list. Unde r Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, ColorSync can be se lected from the Color Matching pa nel. You are recommended to consult the Knowle dge Center at http://www.
preserving shadows wh en the black p oint of the source space is dark er than that of the destin ation space. This option is allowed only wh en the relative colorimetric rendering i ntent is selected (see Set the rendering intent on page 71 ).
HP Professional PANTONE Emulation When you use a na med PANTONE color in an i mage, your application wi ll normally send to the printer a CMYK or RG B approximation to tha t color.
Color adjustment options The aim of color management is to print accurate colors. If you perform co lor manageme nt correctly, then you should be ab le to print accurate colors with no need of any manua l color adjustments.
● In the Mac OS X 10.4 P rint dial og (PostScr ipt drive r): select the Colo r Options pan el, then Lightness an d Hue . ● In the Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 Pri nt dialog (PostScr ipt driver) : select the Color Options panel, select Color from the Mode list, then press the Adjust button.
● The lightness slider simply makes the whole p rint lighter or dark er. This slider is availabl e under Windows in the same window as the other graysca le controls; it is available under Mac OS by selecting Lightness and Hu e . ● The zone definitio n sliders can be used to define what you mean by highlight, midton e and shadow.
