Understand paper use This pr oduct suppor ts a variet y of paper an d other prin t media in a ccordance w ith the guideli nes in this user gui de. Paper or print media tha t does not meet these guideline s might cause poor pri nt quality, incre ased jams, and prematur e wear on the product.
Media t ype Do Do not Heavy paper ● Use only heavy paper that is approved for use in laser printers and meets the weight specifications for this produc t. ● Do not use paper that is heavier than the recom mended media specification for this product unless it is HP paper that has been approved for use in this product.

Load paper trays Load the input tray NOT E: When you add new me dia, make sur e that you remove all o f the media from the inpu t tray and strai ghten the stac k of new m edia. Do n ot fan the media. Thi s reduces ja ms by pre venting mult iple sheets of media from feeding thro ugh the product at one time.
Tray adjustment for short media To print on media shorter tha n 185 mm (7 .28 in), use the shor t media exten der to adjust your input tr ay. 1. Remove th e short media extender tool from the storage slot on the left side of th e media inpu t are a. 2.
4. Push t he paper into the pro duct until i t stops, and then slide the front media gu ide so the tool suppor ts the paper. 5. When fi nished printing with short media, remove the s hort media exten der tool, and then place it bac k in the storage slot .
Load the docu ment feeder (M1210 Series only) NOT E: When you add new media, make sure th at you remov e all of the med ia from the inpu t tray and straig hten the stac k of new media. Do not fan t he media. T his reduce s jams by preventing multiple sheets of media from feeding throu gh the product at one time.

Configu re trays Change the default paper-size setting (M1130 Series) 1. Use the pr inter driv er to chang e the defau lt settings. Cancel a pr int job 1. If the pri nt job is cu rrently pr inting, canc el it by press ing the Cancel button on t he product c ontrol panel. NOTE: Pressing th e Cancel butt on clears the job that the pr oduct is currently processing.

Use copy fu nctions One-touch copy 1. Load the d ocument o nto the scan ner glass or into the document feeder (M 1210 Serie s). 2. Press the Sta rt Copy butt on to start copying. 3. Repeat the proc ess for each copy. Mult iple copies Create mult iple copies (M1 130 Series) 1.
3. Press the arro w buttons to adjust the numb er of copies. 4. Press the St art Copy button to sta rt copying. Create mult iple copies (M121 0 Series) 1. Load the d ocument onto the sca nner glass or into the do cument fe eder. 2. Use the keypad to enter the numbe r of copies.
Cancel a cop y job Cancel a copy job (M11 30 Series ) Press the Can cel button on the product co ntrol panel. NOTE: If more than one pr ocess is running, pres sing the Cancel button c lears the current process and all pending processes. Cancel a copy job (M12 10 Series ) 1.

Change the copy quality se tting (M1130 Series) NOT E: For this model, you cannot c hange the copy-quality setting f or indivi dual cop y jobs. U se this proced ure to chan ge the def ault copy-qual ity sett ing for al l copy j obs. 1. Use the pr inter driv er to chang e the defau lt settings.
Change the c opy quality se tting (M12 10 Se ries) 1. Pres s the C opy S etti ngs bu tton two times to open the Copy Quality menu. 2. Use the arrow buttons to select a copy-quality option, and press the OK button. NOT E: The set ting retu rns to the default value afte r two minutes.
3. Clean the sca nner glass and the whit e plastic backin g with a soft cloth o r sponge that has been mo istened with nonab rasive glass cleane r. CAUTION: Do not use abras ives, acet one, benzene , ammonia, ethy l alcohol, or carbo n tetrach loride on a ny part of the produ ct; these can dam age the prod uct.
Adjust the lig htness or darkness f or copies (M121 0 Series) 1. Press th e Lighter /Darker button. 2. Use th e arrow buttons to increase or decre ase the Lighter/D arker setting.
Copy on b oth si des (dup lex) Copy a two-sid ed original to a o ne-sided document 1. Load the f irst page o f the docume nt onto the scanne r glass or i nto the d ocument feed er (M121 0 Seri es). 2. Press th e Start Copy b utton. 3. Flip the origi nal, and then reload it onto the scanne r glass or i nto the d ocument feed er.
4. Remo ve the copie d page fr om the output bin and place it face down in to the input tray. 5. Press th e Start Copy b utton. 6. Remo ve the copie d page fr om the output bin, and then set it a side for manu al coll ating. 7. Repea t steps 1 through 6, following the or iginal docume nt page orde r, until all pages o f the origin al are copied.

Scan by using other so ftware The produ ct is TWAI N-compliant and Windows Imaging Appli cation (WIA )-compliant. The produc t works with Windows-ba sed program s that suppo rt TWAIN-co mpliant or WI A-compl iant scanning devices a nd with Macintosh -based programs that supp ort TWAI N-compliant scanni ng device s.
Cancel a scan To canc el a scan job, use one of the following pro cedures. ● On the prod uct control pa nel, press th e Cancel butto n. ● Click the C ancel button in the onscreen dia log box.

Set up fax Install and connect the h ardware Connect fax to a telephone line The produc t is an analog device. HP reco mmends using the product on a dedicated analog teleph one line. Connect additional devices The produc t includes two fax por ts: ● The “line ” port , which conne cts the product to the wall telep hone jack.
4. To conn ect an inter nal or ext ernal mo dem on a co mputer, p lug one end of a telep hone cord i nto the product “te lephone” port . Plug the othe r end of the telephone cord into the modem “line” port. NOTE: Some mod ems have a second “line” port to connect to a dedi cated voice li ne.

Change the f ax speed The fa x-speed setti ng is the m odem protoc ol that the product uses to send fax es. It is t he worldw ide stan dard for f ull-duplex modems that send and re ceive d ata across telephon e lines a t up to 33, 600 bits per s econd (b ps).
The product is receiving faxes but is not sending them. Cause Soluti on If the product is on a digital system, the system might be generating a dial tone that the product cannot detect. Disable the detect-dial-tone setting. If the error persists, contact the system servic e provider.
The control panel shows a lo w-memory error. Cause Soluti on The fax might be too large, or the res olution might be too high. Try one of the following: ● Divide a large fax into smaller sections, and then fax them individually. ● Clear stored faxes to make more memory available for outgoing faxes.
Problems receiving faxes NOT E: Use the fa x cord that came wi th the produ ct in order to ensu re that th e product f unctions correctl y. The product cannot receive faxes from an extension telephone. Cause Soluti on The extension-telephone setting might be disabled.
The product is not answering incoming fax calls. Cause Soluti on A voice-messaging s ervice might be int erfering with the product as it attem pts to answer calls . Do one of the following: ● Disable the messaging service. ● Get a telephone line t hat is dedicated to fax calls.
Faxes are being recei ved very slowly. Cause Soluti on The fax might be ver y complex, such as one with many graphics. Complex faxes take longer to be received. Breaking longer faxes into multiple jobs and decreasing the res olution can increase the t ransmission sp eed.
