There are two stylus sto r ag e area s on t he printer: a slot that st ores the stylus until you need to us e it and a hole wh ere you can rest the styl us and keep it ha ndy. Photosmart Menu The follow ing o ption s a re a vail able in the Photos mart menu when you i nsert a memory card or touch the Home icon on the touch screen f rame . 1 Bluetooth indicator light : Indicates whether bluetooth is on or off. 2 Ink level : Indicates the amount of ink estimated to be remaining in the print cartridge.

You can select from a greate r num ber of paper sizes when you print from a computer than when you print wi tho ut a computer. When you print witho ut a comp ute r, t he printer senses the paper size bei ng us ed a nd sca les the image to fit on the pa per size being used.

4 Print from a Bluetooth device This section describes how to p rint from any device with Blue to oth wireless technology, a short-range communicati ons technology that enables a w ide ra nge of devices to connect with each oth er w it hou t th e clutter of cables.
To connect to and pr in t fr om other Bluetooth devices 1. Make sure that yo u have instal led the necess ary software on the Blueto oth device. 2. Have the HP Photosmart search for available Bluet oot h devices. NOTE: It is required that t he Bluetooth Radio is turned on t o en able the Bluetooth opti ons in the Bluetooth M enu.
5 Print without a computer This section contai ns the following topics: • Print from a m emory card • Save photos fr om a memory card to another device • Print from a PictBridge-cer tified camer.
Supported memory c ards The HP Photosmart print er can read a variety of memory cards. These cards are manufactured by severa l ven dors an d are available in a variet y of storage capacit ie s .
Print photos fr om a memory card or US B d ev i c e This section describes severa l w ays to pri nt p hot os from a memory card, includi ng on e photo, mult iple photos, mul tip le copies of the sa me pho t o, and so on. Important : Your photos are instantly dry, an d can be handled immedi ately after they are printed.
4. If you want several copies of the same photo, touch the up an d down arrows on the copies icon and se t the number of copi es to be printed. 1 Number of photos selected 2 Number of copies 5. Touch the arrow keys to browse through p hotos and select ot her photos you w ant to print.

You can apply various speci al effects including Brightness , Contrast , Saturation , Slimming , Retro , and Posterize depe ndi ng o n th e cat egory you choose. You can also modify the effe ct by changing the sett ings available for that effect. To use the Design Gallery creative opti on 1.
Create albums The Albums creative option let s you add ph otos to photo album books. You can sel ect from several catego ries, incl uding: Seasons , Kids , Daily Life , and Special Events . To use the Albums crea tive opti on 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive.
9. In the Album Pages window the recommended nu mber of pages th at will create the best looking album is displaye d. Change the number of page s i f d esire d, an d then touch Do ne . Set the number of copies, and t hen touch Done .The album opens wi th the sel ected photos placed on p ages.
Create Gr eeting Cards The Greeting Cards option lets you make a personal ized greeting card with your phot os. You can modify the ef fect by changing the settings avai lab le for t hat effect. To use the Gree ting Card creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive.
7. Set the number of copies, and t hen touch Done . 8. Touch Prin t . NOTE: You cannot save greet ing cards. Print as many copies of your greeting card as you need before you tu rn off the printer or remove the memory card. Passport photos To use Passport Photos mode 1.
4. Load 10 x 30 cm (4 x 12 inches) pap er w hen prom pted. Touch OK . 5. Browse through your pho to s and t ou c h on e to open it in 1-up view. While the Panoramic Photo s mode is on, the printer di splays photos in the pa noramic aspect ratio. This means onl y part of each photo appe ars.
Create Photo Layouts The Photo L ayouts creative option lets you pri nt several photos on a single sheet o f paper. To use the Photo Layo uts cr ea tive option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash dr ive. 2. Touch Crea te on the Photosmart menu. 3. Touch the Ph oto Layout creative option.
Enhance or edit your photos You can enhance or edit your p hot os in various ways, as explained in the following: • Use Photo Fix • Crop a pho to • Remove red-eye fr om you r ph otos • Use Pet.
4. Touch the Rotate icon if you want to rotate th e crop box 90 degrees clockwise. 5. Drag the crop bo x with your finger or t he stylus to reposition it , touch Do ne , and then touch Prin t . Remove red-eye fr om your photos The printer p rovides a way to red uce red-eye that can occur in p hotos take n with a flash.

6 Print from a computer This section describes how t o print photos when the HP Photosmart A640 series printer is connected to a comp ute r , an d you want to print a photo from an image editing application.
NOTE: Set up the printer and inst al l th e printer software before trying to tra nsfe r or print photo s f rom a connected comput er. F or more information, see Software installation . To save photos from a memory card to a connected computer 1. Insert a memory card that contai ns ph ot os into the correct memory card slot in t he printer.

Change the print setti ngs for the print job This section descri bes how to change print se tt ings, such as paper type or print quality, when printing from a comp ut er.
Change the paper type For best results, always select a specific paper type that matche s the media you are using for the print job. To select a specifi c paper type 1. Open the file that you want to print. 2. Follow the steps for your operating system.

6. In the Paper Size drop-dow n li st, select the size of pa pe r that you have loade d. 7. Select any other print set tings that you want, and the n cli ck OK (Windows) or Print (Mac OS). If you printed on photo paper wit h a tear-off tab, remove the tab to ma ke the document completely borderless.
Print panoramic photos For true panoramic pri nt ing , you must have taken a panoramic photo. Al so, use HP panorama paper 10 x 30 cm (4 x 12 inch). Print on index cards and other small media Guidelines • Use only cards and sm all med ia tha t m eet the printer pape r-size specifications. • Do not exceed the pap er tra y capaci ty w hen lo ading media. For more i nf orma t io n, see Printer specif ications .

View estimated ink levels You can view the estima ted ink l evel of t he print cartridge instal le d in the printer on the printer itsel f. T he p r int er screen displays an ink-leve l icon th at sho.

5. Hold the repla ceme nt cartridge with the label on to p. Slide the cartridge at a slight upward angle into the cradle so t he copper-colored contacts go in f irst. Push the cartridge unti l it snap s in to place. 6. Close the print cart ridge door.
Print a test page The information on a te st pag e can be helpful if you need to cont act HP support. It also contains informat ion ab out ink levels, print or in k cart ridge performance, print er se ri al number, and so on. To print a te st page from the printer 1.
Follow these ti ps to help maintain HP print cartridg es and ensure consistent print quality: • Keep all unuse d pri nt cart ridges in thei r orig inal seal ed packa ges until they are needed. Store print cart ridges at room temperatu re (1 5–3 5 d eg rees C or 59–95 degrees F).
8 Troubleshooting Before contacting HP support, read this section for troublesh ooting tips or go to the onlin e support services at www.hp.com/support . TIP: HP recommends using a USB cable 3 meters (10 f eet) or less in length. Using a longer USB cable may cause e rrors.
Mac users a . Double-click the Ap plications : Hewlett-Packard folder. b . Double-click HP Uninstaller and follow the on screen instructions. 2. Pause or disable an y act ive virus protection applications. 3. Quit all sof tw are ap pl ications. 4. Turn the printer off, w ait 1 0 secon ds, a nd t hen turn the printer on.
The printer d oe s not appear i n Pr in te rs and Faxes (Windows only ) Try the following sol ut ion s to re solve the issue. If the first solu ti on d oes n ot so lve the problem, continue trying the remaini ng soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
Solution 2: Make sure Software Ins t all Mod e is enabled Solution: Make sure Software In stall Mode opti on is enabl ed in the printe r menu. To enable Software In stall Mode 1. Touch the Set up icon to displ ay the Setup menu. For m ore information, see Setup Menu .
I want to attach the printer to my co mputer to transf er photos only, but the software installation pro gra m keeps appearing Solution: To transfer photos f r om th e p rint er to your computer with out installing software, disable Software Ins t all Mode on the print er a nd then connect the print er to your computer with a U S B ca ble .
Solution 1: Check the pow er cord Solution: • The printer ma y be plugged into a power stri p that is turned off. Turn on the powe r strip, and then t urn o n th e pri nt er.
The printout did not appe ar Try the followi ng so luti on for this problem. Solution: Try the following st eps to clear the paper jam: • If the paper came p art way through the front of the printer, ge ntl y pul l the paper towards you to remove it.
Solution 3: Make sur e that the printer powe r co rd is securely attache d Solution: Make sure that the printe r power cord is securely attached and the printer is turned on. Cause: The printer might no t be co nnected to a power sour ce. If this did not so lve the issue, try the ne xt solution.
4. Plug the powe r cord back into the p rinter. 5. Plug the USB cable back into the USB port on the back of the printer. 6. If the problem pe rsists, unp lug the power cord and the U SB cab le an d u ni nsta ll the printer software: a . From the Windo ws Start menu, go to All Programs > HP > HP Ph otosmart A640 seri es > Uninstal l .

Solution 3: Print on corre ct si de o f paper Solution: Make sure the paper is loaded with the side to be printed f acin g up . Cause: You may be printing on the wron g side of the paper. If this did not so lve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 4: Clean prin t cart rid ge Solution: Clean th e print cartridge.
Solution 1: Wait until Blueto oth pr in ter is ready to receive data Solution: Make sure the Blue too t h ra dio is turned on. For more inf ormation see, Print from a Bluetoot h device . Cause: The Blueto ot h rad io may not have been turne d on or th e pri nte r itse lf may not be ready to receive da ta .
Cause: You ma y be too far from the prin ter. No page came out of the printer. Solution: For a list of the fil e fo rmat s tha t th e pri nter supports, see Spec ifications . Cause: The printer may not recognize the type of fi le se nt b y the device with Bluetooth wirele ss tech nolog y.
