1 Welcome Welcome to the HP Deskjet D4300 Print er series Help. This guid e primarily explains how to use your computer and th e printer together. For more informa tion on transferring photos from digi tal cameras and other USB devices to your compute r using the printer, see the follow ing table and select an appropri ate topic.

1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the printer buttons to turn the printer on and off, cancel a print job, and restar t a job. The printer ligh ts give you visual cues about the status of t he printer.
Power button an d light Use the Power button to turn the printer on and off. It can take a few secon ds for the printer to turn on after you press the Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flashes w hen the printer is processing. CAUTION: Always use the Power button to turn the printer on and off.
Resume button and lig ht The Resume light f lashes when an action is required , such as loading paper or clearing a paper jam. When the problem is solved, press the Resume button to con tinue printing.
The Ink Level ligh ts show ink level information f or each print cartridge, f our for the tri-color cartridge and fo ur for the black/photo cartridg e.
Front USB port lights To transfer photos from a digital camera, external card reader, or USB flash drive, to you r computer, ju st plug the camera or other device into the printer's front USB port. You can then print the p hotos using HP Photosmart So ftware.
Unfold the paper trays To unfold the paper tray s 1. Lower the input tra y. 2. Lower the output t ray. 3. Pull out the output-tray extension. Paper trays 15 Get started.
Input tray The input t ray holds paper or othe r media. 1 Input tray Paper guide Print on different sizes of media by sliding the paper guid e to the right or to the left . Output tray Printed pages are de posited in the output t ray. 1 Output tray Raise the output tray to load paper or other media.
To prevent paper f rom falling out of the out put tray, pull out both sect ions of the output- tray extension. I f you are printing in the Fast Draf t mode, raise the output-tray exte nsion stop. 1 Second section of output-tray extension 2 Output-tray extension stop Fold the pape r trays To fold the paper trays 1.
4. Raise the outp ut tray. 5. Raise the i nput tray. Print cartridges Three print cartridges can be used with the printer. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-color print car tridge 3 Photo print cartridge .
Use print cartridges The print cartridges can be used in the following ways: • Everyday printi ng : Use the black and tri-color print cartridges fo r everyday print jobs.
NOTE: When the printer ope rates in ink-backup mode, a message is d isplayed on screen. If the me ssage is displayed and two print cartridges are in stalled in the print er, verify that the prot ective piece of plastic tape has been removed from each print cartridge.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connects t o the computer with a universal seri al bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printi ng performance, use a USB 2.0 com patible cable. For instruction s about connecting the printer with a USB cabl e, see the Setup Gu ide that came with the printer.
5 Print photos using the front USB port You can transfer photo s from a digital camera, externa l card reader, or USB flash drive to your computer, and then print them.
To print from the front USB port 1. Load photo pape r into the printer. For instructions abou t loading photo paper, click o ne of the following opti ons: • Print borderless photos • Print photos with a border 2. Connect your camera o r other USB device to the front USB port usi ng a USB cable.

6 Print photos The printer software o ffers several features that make pri nting digital photos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn ho w to print ph otos Print borderless photos . Print photos w ith a border . Learn how to perform other ph oto printing tasks • Use the photo print cartridge for great colors and virtually grain-free photos.
• Open the file i n a software program such as HP Photosmart Softwa re and resize the photo. Ensure t hat the size corresponds to the paper size that you want to use. • For maximum fade re sistance, use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper. • Verify that the phot o paper that you are using is flat.
1. Open the photo in a so ftware program that allows editing, such as HP Photosmart Software. 2. Open the Printer Properties dialog box . 3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
4. Place the photo paper in the right side of the input tra y. The side to be printed on should face down an d the short edge should point tow ards the printer. NOTE: Some paper sizes might extend beyond the edge of the input tray. 5. Push the paper into the printer until it stops.
4. In the Printing Shor tcuts list, click Photo Printing -with white bo rders , and then select the following optio ns: • Print Quality : Normal or Be st NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advanced tab, an d then select Enabled from the Maximum dp i drop-down list.
Photo print cartridge The photo print cartridge, when used in conjuncti on with the tri-color pri nt cartridge, provides virtually grain-f ree photos. It offers excepti onal fade resistance for ph otos that are printed on HP Prem ium Plus Photo Paper.
To specify ad vanced color settings 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Color tab, and then click th e More Color Options button. The Advanced Color Settings dialog box is displayed. 3. You can adjust t he following settings: • Adjust the Brightness , Saturation , and Color Tone to affect how overall colors are printed .
Storage • Keep unused photo paper in a sealed plastic bag. St ore the packaged photo pa per on a flat surfac e in a cool place. • When you are ready t o print, remove only the pa per that you plan t o use immediately from the p lastic bag. When you have f inished printing, return any unused photo pa per to the plastic ba g.
If you performed the default typical install ation of the printer softw are, you also installed the HP Photosma rt Software. With HP Photosmart Software you ca n easily: • Organize, edit, and share .

Print brochures Guidelines • Do not print borderle ss brochures in ink-backup mode. Always have two print cartridges installed in the printer. For more information, see Ink-backup mode . • Open the file in a softw are program and assign the brochure size.
Print greeting cards Greeting cards • Unfold prefol ded cards, and then place the m in the input tray. • For great results, use H P Greeting Card Paper. • Do not exceed the in put tray capacity: 20 cards. Prepare to print 1. Raise the outpu t tray, and then remove all paper from th e input tray.
For example, when a f our-page booklet is printed on both si des of the paper, the pag es are reordere d and printed like this: Guidelines Do not exceed the i nput tray capacity: 100 sheets of paper. Prepare to print 1. Raise the outpu t tray. 2. Slide the paper g uide all the way to the l eft.
6. When prompted, reload the printed pag es in the paper tray as shown below. 7. Click Continue to finish printing the booklet . Use the What's This? help to learn about the fe atures that appear in the Printer Properties dialog box. F or more information, see What's This? help .

Prepare to print 1. Raise the outpu t tray, and then remove all paper from th e input tray. 2. Slide the paper guide all the way to the left. 3. Place the iron-on transfer paper in the right side of the input tray. The side to b e printed on should fa ce down.
8 Printing tips Learn how to use printing shortcuts, sele ct a paper type, change the print resolution, se t the page orde r, print multiple page s on a single sheet, previ ew a document, and use two- sided printin g. Click any of the foll owing links: Check your prin ter • Connect the printer .
NOTE: When you select a p rinting shortcut the appropria te printing options are automatically displayed . You can leave them as is or change them. This secti on contains the fo llowing topic s: • U.
3. In the Printing Shor tcuts list , click the pri nting shor tcut that you want to delet e. 4. Click Delete . The printing short cut is removed from the list. NOTE: Only the shortcut s that you have created can be deleted. The original HP shortcuts cannot be deleted.
4. Click OK . 5. Select any other print sett ings that you want, and then click OK . Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskjet au tomatically chooses a print qua lity and speed setting depe nding on the paper type se tting you select. You can also cha nge the print quality sett ing to customize the sp eed and qu ality of the prin t process.
To get the mo st benefit from maximum dpi mode, use it to print high-qualit y images such as digital photogra phs. When you select the maximum dpi setting, the printer software displays the optim ized dots per inch (dpi) that the HP Deskjet p rinter will print.
3. Click Document Op tions , and then click Layou t Options . 4. Select one of the f ollowing Page Order options: • Front to back : Prints the first page of the document last. Th is setting saves time because you do no t have to reorder the print ed pages.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up to 16 pag es on a single sheet of paper. To print multiple pages on a si ngle sheet of paper 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Pages Per Sheet drop-down list , select the number of pages that you wa nt to appear on each sheet of paper.
To resize a document for a di fferent paper size 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. Click Scale to paper size , and then select the target paper size in the drop-d own list. The target pape r size is the size of the paper on which yo u are printing, not the size for which the docum ent was formatted.
6. After the odd-numbe red pages have been printed, reloa d the printed pages with the printed side f acing up. 7. Click Continue to print the even-numbered pages.

4. If your Web browser supports it, select the items on the Web pa ge that you want to include in th e printout. For example, in Internet Explore r, click the Options tab to select options such as As laid out on screen , Only the selected frame , and Print all linked documents .
9 Printer software • Make the HP Deskje t the default printer • Set default print settings • Printer Properties dialog box • What's This? he lp • Download pri nter software upd ates Make the HP Deskjet the default printer You can set the H P Deskjet as the default printer to use from any software program.
To save time when printi ng, set the default print sett ings to options that you use oft en. That way, you do not have to speci fy the options every time you use the print er. To change the defa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digital Imaging Mon itor icon on the right side of t he Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Pri nter Properties dialog box can vary dependi ng on the software prog ram you are using. What's This? help Use the What's This ? help to lea rn about the featur es that you see on the Printer Properties dialog box.

Choose cartri dge combinations for best res ults • Text and graphics: Combine tri-color and black pri nt cartridges. • Color photos: Combi ne tri-color and photo print cartridges. Always install th e tri-color print cartridge in the left side of the print cartrid ge carriage.
4. Wait until th e print cartridge carria ge moves to the right si de of the printer and is idle and quiet. 5. Press down on the print cartrid ge, and then slide it out of the print cartridge carriage. 6. Remove the repla cement print cartridg e from its packaging and car efully remove the plastic tape.
7. Slide the print ca rtridge at a slig ht upward angle in to the carriage until the cartri dge snaps into place. 8. Close the printer cover. Align print cartridges for op timum print qu ality. For information abo ut storing print cartridges, see Mainta in print cartridg es .
To clean the print cartr idges 1. Open the pri nter Toolbox . 2. Click Clean the Print C artridges . 3. Click Clean , and t hen follow the onscreen inst ructions. If your documents are sti ll faded after cleaning, manu ally clean the print ca rtridge contacts.
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet ejects ink onto the paper in a fine mi st, ink smudges will eventually appe ar. To remove smudges, stai ns, or dried ink from the exterior 1. Turn off the HP De skjet, and then disconnect the po wer cord.
To prepare to clea n 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until th e print cartridge carriage mo ves to the right side of t he HP Deskjet and is idle and qui et. 3. Remove the print cartridg es and place them on a piece of pape r, with the copper strips facing up.
Print cartridge storag e and handling Follow these guid elines to help maintain H P print cartridges and ensure co nsistent print quality: • When you remove a photo pri nt cartridge from the printer, store it in a print cartridge protector to prevent t he ink from drying out.
To remove the print cartr idge from the print cartridge protector 1. Press down and back on the to p of the protector to release the pri nt cartridge. 2. Slide the print cartridg e out of the protector. CAUTION: Do not drop the print cartridge. Dropp ing the print cartridge can damage it.
11 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartridg e reorder number, see the printed docume ntation that came with the HP Deskjet . You can also use the software that came wi th the HP Deskjet to fin d out the reorder number for the prin t cartridge.

To resolve the problem, follow the instructio ns in Resolving print cartridge error messages . Print cartridge p roblem message The printer cannot print if the print cartridges are faulty, or if th ey are not installed properly.
Cause: A genuine H P print cartridge was previously used in another printer. Original HP ink de pleted Solution: Follow the prom pts on the computer screen to contin ue or replace the indicated print cartrid ges. For more informati on, see Replace print cart ridges .
removed from each print cart ridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridge contacts, the pr inter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is inst alled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Pri n ters folder or from the prin ter icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect all ap plications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft Word. To set the paper size in Microso ft Word 1.
Installation progr am stops Cause: If the installation progra m stops when it looks for new hardware, one of the following issues is causing a communication problem: • The USB cable is old or defecti ve. • Software, such as an antivirus program, is run ning.
To resolve the pr oblem 1. Disconnect the USB ca ble from the printer. 2. Disconnect the power cord f rom the printer. 3. Wait approximat ely 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the power cord t o the printer. 5. Reconnect the USB cable to the printer. 6. If the “Unknow n Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The printe r lights indi cate the pr inter status. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights 4 Front USB port lights To resolve the problem t hat is causing the lights to flash , click the appropriate link.
If the Power light is flashi ng, the printer is preparing to print. The ligh t stops flashing when the printer has received all data. Resume l ight is flashing 1 Resume l ight If the Resume li ght is flashing, check the f ollowing conditions: • The printer might be out of paper.
Print Cart ridge Status lights are on or flashi ng The printer has two pri nt cartridge status lights. 1. The left status ligh t represents the tri-color print cartridge, wh ich is installed in the left side of the print ca rtridge carriage. 2. The right status li ght represents the black or the phot o print cartridge.
Otherwise, follow these steps: 1. Raise the printer cover, remove the print cartridge on the right, and then lower the cover. 2. Follow one of these steps: • If the Power light is flashing: Open the pr inter cover, reinsert the print cartridge that you removed , and then remove the other p rint cartridge.
• Solution 3: Cl ear the print queue • Solution 4: C heck the printer cable co nnection • Solution 5: Verify the printer dri ver configura tion • Solution 6: Ch eck if the printer is paused or.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your computer to clear the print queue. To clear the print qu eue 1. Restart your computer. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check the p rint queue.
After reconnecti ng the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting the pro duct through a USB hub, make sure t he hub is turned on. If th e hub is on, try connecting direct ly to your computer. 5. If the produ ct does not start printing automati cally, start another print job .
6. Check the driver listed in the Driver drop-down menu to verify that the product is using the c orrect driver. The name of your prod uct should be listed as the d river. 7. If the wrong drive r is selected, select the correct driver fro m the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the p rint queue manually Solution: Manual ly clear the print queue. To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software application is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the soft ware application is the problem. To verify the softwar e application 1. Close the soft ware application and re open it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software a pplication.
Best or Maximum dp i print mode is selecte d The printer prints more slow ly when Best or Maximum dpi is selected as the print quality. To increase the printer speed, se lect a different print qual ity mode. Printer is in ink-b ackup mode The printer might print more slowly if i t is in ink-backup mode.
To determine which cartridge is having the pr oblem 1. Make sure the printer is on. 2. Open the pri nter cover. Wait unti l the print cartr idge carriag e moves to the righ t side of the printer and is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the tri-color print ca rtridge from the slot on the le ft.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the error has b een resolved, then there is a proble m with the black print cartridge. • If the error has not be en resolved, then there is a prob lem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have iden tified the problem cartridg e, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure i t is compatible wi th your printer. Compatible print cartridges are listed in the ref erence guide that ca me with your printer. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selection n umber, install a new prin t cartridge.
Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1 : Turn the p ower off and on • Solution 2 : Clear any pape r jams • Solution 3: Move the printer carriage • Solution 4 : Verify the p ower source • Solution 5: Remove and reinstall the print cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the pow er off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move the pr inter carriage Solution: If the printer carriage i s still stuck, try moving it as described in t he following pro cedure. To move the printe r carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power co rd from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify th e power source Solution: Verify that the printer is properly connected to a suitable power source. To verify the powe r source 1. Verify that the compu ter and the printer have the co rrect power plugs depending on your country/region.
4. Remove the rear access door. Press th e handle to the right, and then pull out the door. 5. Remove any paper that is insid e the printer by pulling it out from the back of the printer. If you are prin ting labels , verify that a labe l did not b ecome detached fro m the label sheet while passi ng through the pri nter.
• Use a different t ype of paper. • Use only on e type of paper i n the input tra y at a time. Printer ejects paper Solution: If t he printer ejects the pap er, try one of the foll owing solutions: • Verify that th e protective piece of plastic tape has been remove d from the print cartridges.
If this did not solve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Chec k the paper Solution: Check the paper loade d in the input tray and the print se ttings. To check the paper in the in put tray 1. While the product is on, rem ove the power cord from the back of the prod uct.
4. Click the button that opens th e Printer Properties dialog box. Depending on you r software application, this button might be ca lled Properties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Preferences . 5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Resizing Options area, click the appropri ate paper size from the Size list.
Solution 4: Use the HP Pape r Feed Cleaning Kit Solution: Some Deskjet product s require a special kit, called t he HP Paper Feed Cleaning Kit, to clean the paper feed rollers and resolve t his issue. To see if this aff ects your product, go to: www .
Solution 6: Contact HP supp ort for service Solution: If you have com pleted all of the steps provided in the previous solutions, contact HP support for servic e. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and the n click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support.
Check the printer prope rties Open the Printer Properties di alog box and verify the follo wing options: Tab Setting Features Size : An appropriate paper size Paper Type : An appropriate photo paper Print Quality : Best or Maximum dpi NOTE: For more information on enabling the maximum dpi mode, see Maximum dpi .
Fading occurs ne ar the edges of a photo If fading occurs a pproximately 25 to 63 mm (1.0 to 2.5 inches) from the edge of a photo, try the follow ing solutions: • Install a photo print cart ridge and a tri-color print cart ridge in the printer. • Use maximum dp i mode to print the photo.
Image is printed at an angle Solution: Verify that no problem exists w ith the source image. F or example, if you are printin g a scanned image, verify th at the image was not crooked when it w as scanned. If the problem is not caused by the source image , follow these steps: 1.
Verify that the photo paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curl ed, place the paper in a plastic bag and g ently bend it in the opposite dire ction of the curl until the paper lies flat. If the prob lem persists, then use photo pa per that is not curled.
If the printout has an unwanted border, try the fol lowing solutions: • Align print cartridges . • Open the Printer Properties dialog box , click the Features tab, and verify t hat the selected paper size matches bot h the paper size that the photo i s formatted for and the size of the paper th at is loaded in the printer.
Print quality is poor This secti on contains the fo llowing topic s: • Wrong, inaccurate, or bleed ing colors • Ink is not fi lling the text or grap hics complete ly • The printou t has a horizo.

If you are satisfi ed with the print qu ality, continue pri nting in ink-backup mode. Or, replace the mi ssing print cartridge. For more information, see: • Ink-backup mode • Replace print ca rtridges Cause: A print cartridge was m issing, and the product was printing in ink-backup mode.
