1 1 Printing Basics Buttons and Lights The HP DeskJet printer buttons (shown below) let you turn the printer on and off, cancel a print job, or resume printing. The lights give you visual cues about the state of your printer. The buttons and lights from left to right ar e: Cancel Button – Press this button to cancel the current print job.
2 Printing Basics 1 Paper T r ays F old-Up T ray The Fold-Up tr ay, at the fr ont of the printer, contains the IN and OUT tr ays. The Fold-Up tr ay must always be lower ed to print or to access the ink cartridges. IN T ray T o print, place paper or other media types in the IN tr ay.
3 Printing Basics 1 OUT T ray The printer sends finished pages to the OUT tr ay. OUT T ray Flap Down – This is the typical position for most types of printing. The down position also allows single envelope printing and printing on media smaller than 100 x 148 mm or 4 x 5 5/8 inches.
4 Printing Basics 1 How to Print The printer is controlled thr ough a software pr ogram that you install on your computer. The softwar e pr ogr am provides a dialog box (lik e the one shown below) that you use to communicate with the printer. In the dialog box, you select settings such as paper size and type, orientation, and print quality.
5 Printing Basics 1 From your softwar e progr am, try this: 1 Click File Print . 2 Y our software pr ogram opens a Print dialog box, similar to the one above. From the Print dialog box, click whichever button you see— Properties , Setup , or Printer .

9 2 Beyond the Basics Getting the Right Paper Most plain photocopy paper works fine in your printer, particularly paper that is mark ed for use in inkjet printers. T o get the best r esults, use one of the Hewlett- Packar d papers, which were developed especially for HP inks and your printer.

25 3 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges Print Cartridge Status The Print Cartridge Status Light flashes when one or both of your print cartridges are low on ink, improperly installed, or malfunctioning. It will also flash if you are trying to use the wr ong print cartridge type.

27 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 Replacing Print Cartridges T o r eplace a print cartridge: 1 T o access the print cartridge cradle, lower the F old-Up tr ay, and then press the Power Button to turn on the printer. 2 Open the top cover.
28 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 5 Remove the replacement print cartridge fr om its packaging and car efully remove the pr otective vinyl tape. Do NO T touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. T ouching these parts will result in clogs, ink failur e, and bad electrical connections.
29 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 Storing Print Cartridges T o maintain excellent print quality fr om your print cartridges: • K eep all print cartridges in their sealed packages, at room temper ature (60-78˚ F or 15.6-26.6˚ C), until you are r eady to use them.
30 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 Cleaning Print Cartridges When Do Y ou Need to Clean? Clean the print cartridges if your printed page is missing lines or dots, or if it contains ink streaks.
31 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 Manually Cleaning the Print Cartridges and Print Cartridge Cradle In order to pr operly clean the print cartridges and cr adle, you will need distilled or bottled water and cotton swabs or a similar lint-free absorbent material that will not stick to the cartridges.
32 Using and Caring for Your Print Cartridges 3 Manually Cleaning the Print Cartridge Cradle 1 Using clean, moistened swabs, wipe the underside of each wall of the cradle. 2 Repeat until no ink residue is seen on a clean swab. 3 Reinsert the print cartridges, then close the printer’s top cover.
33 4 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong T roubleshooting Tips It’s frustr ating when things go wr ong, but the following pages contain tips that can help you determine what the problem is and how to fix it. Be sure cable connections are secur e. Mak e sure that you ar e using the right cable for your operating system.
34 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 The softwar e did not install correctly. • There may be a conflict with your virus pr otection progr am. OR • There may be a conflict with another softwar e progr am. OR • Y our printer softwar e didn’t install properly.
35 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 When I connect a USB cable between the printer and my computer, an “Unknown device” message appears. • Static electricity has built up in the cable between your computer and printer. OR • Y ou may have a defective USB cable.
36 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 Why won’t it print? What is the problem? Possible cause T o solve the problem… No page came out of the printer. Power may be off or ther e may be a loose connection. 1 Mak e sure the power is on. 2 Mak e sure that all cable connections are secur e.
37 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 A blank page came out of the printer. Y ou may be out of ink. 1 Lift the printer cover and check the Print Cartridge status icons to mak e sur e you ar e not out of ink. See “Print Cartridge Status” on page 25.
38 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 I have a USB cable, and when I try to print I get a message saying “Ther e was an error writing to LPT1.” Y ou may not have plugged your USB cable in befor e installing the softwar e. 1 Disconnect the USB cable fr om your printer.

Y ou may not be using the best media. • Mak e sure that you ar e using media intended for HP DeskJet printer s. • Print quality is dr amatically impro ved if you print on paper specifically designed for a certain output (photogr aphs, for ex ample), rather than using plain paper.
43 Getting Help When Things Go Wrong 4 Print quality is poor. (continued) Y ou may have for gotten to remove the vinyl tape fr om the print cartridge. Mak e sure that you have r emoved the protective piece of vinyl tape on each of the print cartridges.
