5 Removal and Replacement Procedures Micro T ower ( MT ) Chassis Adh eren ce to the procedures a nd precautions des cribed in t hi s chapter is es sential for pr oper service. After c om p le ti ng a ll nec essary remov al and re pla cement procedures, run the Diagnostics u ti li ty to verify that a ll components opera te proper l y .

6 Restore and Recover y Micro soft Sys tem Rest ore If you h av e a p roblem that m ig ht be due to software that was inst alled on y our compu ter , use System Restore to return the comput er to a previous restore po int . Y ou can al s o set restore point s m an ua ll y .
Y ou must choose one of the fo ll ow in g methods to perform a System Recovery: ● Recovery Im age — Run the System Recovery from a recovery i ma ge stored on your hard d isk drive. T h e recovery i ma ge is a fi le that contain s a copy of the o ri gi na l factory -shipp ed s oftware.
System Recov e ry at System Start up CAUTION: System Recovery delet es a ll data an d programs you create d or ins tal led . Back up any im por tant data to a rem ovabl e disc. If W indows is not responding, but the computer is working, fol low these steps to per form a System Recovery .
Reco very Di scs Y ou should cr eate a set of recovery discs from the recovery i ma ge stored on your hard di sk drive. Th is im a ge contains the op erat ing system a nd software program files that were or igina lly ins tal led on y our computer at the factory .
7 Computer Diagnosti c Features Hewl ett-P ack ard Vision Diagn osti cs NOTE: HP V isi on Diagnostics is i nc l u de d on CD w ith some com puter models only .
NOTE: If the system does not boot to the CD in the op tical drive, you may need to chang e the boot order in the Com pute r Set up (F10) uti lit y . 5. At the boot me nu, select eithe r the HP Vision Diagnostics uti lit y to test the various hardware component s in the computer or the HP Memory T est uti lit y to test mem ory on ly .
T est T ab T he T es t tab allows yo u to choose various parts of the system to test. Y ou can also choo se the type of test and testing m ode. Th ere are three types of tests to choose from: ● Quick T est — Provides a pr ede termin ed script where a sample of each hardw are co mpo nent is exercis ed.
T he Status tab al so show s : ● T he devices b e i n g tested ● T he test status (running, w aitin g, passed, or fail ed) of ea ch dev ice b e in g tested ● T he ove ra ll test progress of al l.
Help T ab T he Help tab contains a Vision Help section , and a T est Components sectio n. Th is tab include s search and inde x f eatures. Y ou may also revi ew the HP End User License A gr eem ent (EULA), as well as the HP Vis ion Diagno stic a pp l ica t io n version in form atio n on this tab.
Prot ectin g the Softw are To prote ct software from los s or dam age, y ou should keep a backup copy of al l system s oftware, app licati ons , a nd rel ated f iles stored on the hard dr i ve. S ee the o perati ng system or backup ut ilit y doc ume ntati on f or instructions on making backup copies of data files.
8 T roubleshooting W ithout Diagnosti cs This chap ter provides in form atio n on how to i den tify and correct m inor problems, such as diskette drive, hard dr ive, opt ical dr i ve, graphics, a ud io , memory , and software problems.
● Boo t the computer to the Sa fe M ode to see if it w i ll boot wit hout a l l of the drivers l o ad ed . When b oo ti ng the o perat ing system, use ― L a s t Know n Co n fi gur a ti o n. ‖ ● Refer to the comprehe nsive o n l in e te chnica l support at http:// www .
● Wa ke the compu ter by pressing any key on the keyboard or pressing the power button. If the system remains in suspend mo de, shut down the computer by pressi ng and h ol di ng the power button for at least four seconds then press the power button a g ai n to restart the c omputer .
Solving Gen eral Problem s Y ou may be ab l e to easily resolve the gen eral problems described in this section . If a probl em persists a nd you are u na ble to resolve it yourse lf or if you f e el uncomfo rtable about performing the opera tio n, contact an authorized dealer or reseller.
Co mput er appears locked up and will not tur n off when the power but ton is presse d. Cause Solu tion Software control of the power switch is not funct ional . 1. Pres s and hold the power button for at le ast five seconds until the computer turns off.
Curs or will not mov e usin g the arrow keys on the keypad. Cause Solu tion The Num Lock key may be on. Press the Num Lock key . The Num Loc k light should not be on if you want to use the arrow keys. Can not re mov e co mput er co ver or access panel.
Poor perf orm ance is experie nced. Cause Solu tion Some software applicatio ns, especially games , are stress ful on the graphics subsystem Computer needs to be restarted .
Solving Diskett e Problem s Commo n causes a nd solution s for disk ette problems are listed in the f ol l ow in g tabl e. NOTE: S om e comp uters do not support int ernal disk ette driv es.
A pro blem has occu rred with a disk trans acti on. Cause Solu tion The directo ry structure is bad, or there is a problem wit h a file. In Micro sof t Window s 7, right -clic k Start, click Explore, and right -click on a drive. Select Proper ties then select the T ools tab.
Solving Hard Driv e Problem s Hard drive err or occurs. Cause Solu tion Hard disk has bad sectors or has failed. 1. In Micro sof t Window s 7, right -clic k Start , click Explore , and right-click on a drive. Select Proper ties then select the T o ols tab.
Solving Media Card Reader Problem s CAUTION: Do not insert or remove memory cards when the in -use l i ght is flashing. To do so may cause data loss, or it may perma n ent ly d ama ge the card read er . Medi a card will not work in a digi tal camera after for matti ng it in Micr osof t Windo ws 7.
Do not know how to re mov e a media card correctly . Cause Solu tion The computer’s software is used to safely eject the card. On the Window s deskt op, open Computer , right -clic k on the correspon ding drive icon, and select Eject . Then pull the card out of the slot.
Solving Display Problem s If you encounter display problems, see the docume ntat ion that came with the mon ito r a nd to the commo n causes and solution s listed in the foll owing tabl e. Screen is blan k, an d monit or powe r light is not lit. Cause Solu tion Power cord is not properly connected.
Mon itor doe s not func tio n properly when use d with energy saver featu res. Cause Solu tion Monito r without energy saver capabilities is being used with Disab le monito r energy saver feature. energy saver feat ures enabled. Dim characte rs. Cause Solu tion The brightnes s and contrast controls are not set properly .
“No Co nnect ion, Check Sign al Cab le” displays on screen. Cause Solu tion Computer is not turned on. Monito r video cable is disconnect ed. Press the power button on the fron t of the monito r . Connect the video cable between the monito r and compu ter .
Solving Audio Problem s If the computer has a udi o featur es and you encount er a ud io problems, see the common caus es a nd solutions listed in the f ol lo wi ng tabl e. Sound does not come out of the speaker or hea dph one s. Cause Solu tion Softw are volum e contro l is turned dow n or muted .
Sound fro m hea dpho nes is not clear or muf fled. Cause Solu tion Headphones are plugged into the rear audio output connector . The rear audio output connector is for powered Plug the headphones into the headphone connector on the front of the computer.
Solving Printer Problem s If you encounter printer problems, see the docum entation that came with the printer and to the commo n causes a nd solution s listed in the f o ll ow i ng tabl e. Print er will not print. Cause Solu tion Printer is not turned on and online.
Solving Keybo ard and Mous e Problem s If you encounter keyboar d or mouse problems, see the docum e ntat ion that came with the e qui pm e nt a nd to the common causes a nd solution s listed in the f o ll ow i ng tabl e. Keyboard co mman ds an d typin g are not rec og nized by the co mpu ter .
Mou se doe s not res pond to move ment or is too slow . Cause Solu tion Mouse connector is not properly plugged into the back of the computer . Program in use has stopped responding to commands. Mouse is not detected. Mouse may need cleaning . Surface under the mouse is too smooth for the roller ball to work eff ectively .
Curs or mov es too fas t or too slow. Cause Solu tion Cursor speed needs adjustment. Adjust the cursor speed: 1. Click Start > Co ntrol Panel > Hardware an d Sound > Mouse .
Solving Hardw are Installatio n Problem s Y ou may need to reconfigure the computer when you add or remove hardware, such as an a ddi t io nal drive or expansion card. If you install a p lu g and pla y device, Windows autom a ti c all y recog nizes the devi ce and configu res the computer .
New or existing device does not work after installin g a new device. Cause Solution There is a conflict with an existing devi ce. To re s olve a device c onflict, y ou may need to disab le one of the dev ices or uninstall an old d evice driv er: 1. Click Start , and c li ck Control Panel .
Solving Netw ork Problem s S om e common causes an d solution s for networ k problems are listed in the foll owing tabl e. These gui delines do not discus s the proces s of d ebu gg in g the netw ork c ab l in g. Wake- on -LA N fea ture is not func tio ning.
Network driv er does not dete ct network co ntroll er . Cause Solu tion Network controller is disabled. Incorre ct network driver . 1. Run Comp uter Setup and enable network contro lle r . 2. Enable the network con trolle r in the ope rati ng sys tem via Devic e Mana ger .
Diag nosti cs passes, but the co mpu ter doe s not co mmu nica te with the network. Cause Solu tion Network drivers are not loaded, or driver parameters do not match current configura tion. The network controller is not configure d for this computer .
Solving Memo ry Problem s If you encounter memory problems, some co mm on causes an d solution s are listed in the f o ll ow in g tabl e. CAUTION: Power may still be supplied to the DIMMs when the computer is turned off.
Solving CD -ROM and DV D Problem s If you encounter CD -ROM or DVD problems, see the common causes a nd solutio ns listed in the f o ll ow i ng t ab le or to the document ati on that came with the op ti on al device. System will not boot fro m CD -ROM or DVD drive .
Can not ejec t co mpac t disc (tray -loa d unit) . Cause Solu tion Disc not properly seated in the drive. Eject button may not be functioning . Turn off the compu ter and inse rt a thin metal rod into the emergen cy eject hole and push firm ly . Slowly pull the tray out from the drive until the tray is fully extended, then remov e the disc.
Rec ordi ng or copyin g CDs is diffic ult or im possi ble. Cause Solu tion Disc space has been exceeded. Other applica tions are causing a resour ce conflic t. Wrong or poor quality media type. Network is slow . The rec ordin g soft ware may not let you add a track if it exceeds the available space on your disc.
Solving USB Flas h Drive Problem s If you encounter USB flash drive problems, comm on causes and solution s are listed in the f o ll ow i ng tabl e. USB flas h drive is not seen as a drive let ter in Wind ows. Cause Solu tion The drive letter after the last physical drive is not available.
Solving Front Pan el Component Problem s If you encounter problems with devices connected to the front p ane l, refer to the common causes a nd solutions listed in the foll owing tabl e. A USB devic e, head pho ne, or micr op hone is not reco gni zed by the co mput er .
Solving Internet Acce ss Problem s If you encounter Internet access problems, consult your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or refer to the commo n causes and solution s listed in the foll owing tabl e. Una ble to co nnec t to the Inter ne t. Cause Solu tion Internet Service Provider (ISP) account is not set up properly .
Una ble to co nnec t to the Inter ne t. Cause Solu tion IP address is not configured properly . Cookies are corrup ted. (A ―c oo ki e‖ is a small piece of informat ion that a Web server can store temporar ily with the Web browser. This is useful for having the browser remember some specific informat ion that the Web server can later retrieve .
Solving Software Problem s Most softwar e problems occur as a result of the foll owing: ● Th e ap pl i ca ti on was not insta lled or configured correc tly . ● The re is insufficient memory a va i l abl e to run the ap pl i c at io n. ● The re is a confl ict between applications.
9 POST Error Messages This a pp en di x lists the error mess ages a nd the various au di bl e sequences that you may encounter duri ng Power- On Self-T est (POST) or computer restart, the prob able source of the probl em, a nd steps you can take to resolve the error condit ion.
