T his spread s the f orc es of a crash over t he st r ongest bones in your upper body. If t he seat belt touches or cros ses your n eck, or if it crosses you r arm instead of your shou lder, you n eed to adjust t he seat belt anchor heigh t.

T he lap/s houlder belt goes over your s houlder, acr oss y our c hest , and a cr oss y our hips . To f as ten th e be lt, i n se rt the latc h plat e int o t he buckle , t hen t ug on t he belt t o mak e sur e t he buck le is lat ched (se e page f or how t o proper ly posit ion the belt ).

If a seat belt is worn du ring a crash, it must be re place d by your dea ler. A belt t hat ha s be en w orn dur ing a crash m ay n ot p rovi de the same le vel of prot ect ion in a subse quent cr as h. T he dea ler should a lso inspec t t he anchor s f or da mage and r epla ce them if needed.

If the impact is on t he passenger ’s side, t he pa ssenger ’s side curt a in airb ag wi ll i nf late eve n if t here are n o occupant s on t ha t side of t he ve hicle. Thi s i nd ic ato r a le rts yo u th at the passe nge r’s f ront ai rbag has been shut of f because weight sensors det ect a bout 65 lbs (2 9 kg) or less (t he weight of a n inf ant or small child) on t he f ront pass enger ’s se at . It does there is a p roblem wi th th e air b ag .
If wat er or anot her liquid soa ks into a se at - back , i t can pr event th e si de ai rbag cutof f system f r om worki ng proper ly. Improper ly r epla cing or covering f ront seat -back covers can pr ev ent your side air bags f rom inf lat ing dur ing a side impa ct .
− − − Child ren dep end on adults to protect them. However, despi te t heir best int ent ions, ma ny a dult s do not know how t o protect child passengers. If you have child ren, or ever need to driv e w it h a child in your ve hicle, be sure t o r ea d t his sect ion.

Only a re ar -f a cing c hild sea t pr ovides proper suppor t f or a ba by’s hea d, neck, and ba ck. A n inf a nt must be proper ly res t ra ined in a re ar -f a cing, r eclining child sea t unt il t he c hild re ache s t he sea t make r’s weight or height limit f or t he sea t , and th e child is at lea st one year ol d.
Of t he di f f erent s eats avai lab le, we recomme nd t hose t ha t hav e a f ive - poi nt harness system as sho wn. In any of these sit uat ions, we str ongly r ecommend t ha t you inst all th e child sea t dire ct ly be hind t he f ront passenger’s seat, move the seat as f ar f orward as n eeded , an d leave it unoccupied.
In sea t ing posit ions and v ehicle s not equipped w it h L A T CH, a L A T CH- compat ible child se at c an be inst a lled using a sea t belt . What ever t ype of sea t you choo se, to prov ide pr oper prot ect ion, a c hild seat should meet three requir ement s: L ook f or F MV SS 213 or CMVSS 213 on the bo x.

When not using the L A T CH syst em, all chi ld seats must be secured to the vehic le w it h t he la p pa rt of a la p/ shoulder belt . Wit h th e child s ea t in t he de sire d sea t ing posit ion, r out e t he be lt t hrough t he child sea t a ccording to the seat maker’s instructions, the n in ser t th e latc h pl ate i nto th e buckle.
