- 1 - 1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Ha wking Tech nolo gies HWUG 1 Wireless 802.11 u sb Adapter wi th removable antenna. The removable antenna e nables user to upgrade to a hig her power antenna for a wider wireless coverage.

- 3 - 1.4 Wireless Network Options / Quick Tutorial The Peer-to-Peer Netw ork (also known as Ad-Hoc Mode) This network installation lets you set a small wi re less workgroup easily and qui ckly. Equipped with wireless PC Cards, wirele ss PCI, or Wireless USB adapters, you can share files and printers directly between each PC and laptop.
- 4 - 2 Installation Procedure Before you proceed with the inst all ation, please notice following descriptio ns. Note1 : Please do not install the HWUG1 into your computer b efore installing the software program from the CD. Note2: The following installation was operated under Windo ws XP.

Follow the instruction of the program to plug in the Mini USB Adapter into the USB port of your desktop or laptop computer .

- 7 - 2.1 V erify Device Installation To verify that the device has been properly inst all ed in your computer and is enabled, go to Start Æ Settings Æ Control Panel Æ System ( Æ Hardware) Æ Device Manager .
- 8 - 3 NETWORK CONNECTION Once the driver has been installe d, you will need to make adjust ments to your network settings. In Windows 98SE/ME 1. Go to Start Æ Settings Æ Control Panel Æ Net work . 2. Make sure that you have all the followin g components installed.
- 9 - 4. Highlight Microsoft , and then double click o n the item you want to add. Click OK . After returning to the Network scre en, you can ma ke you r computer is visib le on the network by enabling the File and Print Sharing . 5. Click the Identification tab.

- 14 - 4 Configuration Utility The Hawking Wireless Conf iguration Utility is a power ful application that helps you configure the HWUG 1 and monitor the link status and statisti cs of your wirele ss connection. The Configuration Utility appears as an icon o n the system tray of your Windows operating system while the adapter is running.
- 15 - 4.2 Site Survey When you open the Co nfiguration Utility, the syst em will scan all wireless channels to find all access points/stations within the accessible range of your card and autom atically connect to the wirele ss device with the highest signal strength.
- 16 - 4.3 Profile The “Profiles List” is for you to manage the netwo rks you con nect to frequently. You are able to Add/Delete/Edit/Activate a profile. Parameter Description Profiles List The profiles list display all the profiles and the relative informatio n including Profile Name, SSID, Channel, etc.
- 17 - 4.3.1 Configure the Profile (Add/Edit a Profile ) System Configuration Parameter Description Profile Name Define a recognizable profile name for you to identify the dif ferent networks. SSID The SSID (up to 32 printabl e ASCII characters) is the unique name identified in a WLAN.

T r ansmit Power If you wish to lower the tr ansmit power of the card to save the power of your system, you can select the lower percent ages from the list.
- 19 - 4.3.2 Authentication vs. Security Under the profiles t ab, you are able to specify the ty pe of security/authentication mode used to connect with a wireless network. T o access, create a new profile or click “edit” on one of the profile s and select the “Authentication and Security” t ab.
