3 Configuration Utility The Configuration Utility is a pow erful applicat ion that helps you configure the HWU54DMA and monitor the link status and statistics of your wireless connection. Each time you insert the Hawking Hi-Gain card the Hawking Wireless Utility should automatically load.
Connect Button Click “Connect” to connect to the selected network. Add t o Prof i le B u tto n Add the selected network to Profiles list. 3.2 Profile The “Profiles List” is for you to manage the networks you connect to frequently. You are able to Add/Delete/Edit/Activate a profile.
3.2.1 Configure the Profile System Configuration Parameter D escription Profile Name Define a recognizable profile name for you to identify the dif ferent networks. SSID The S S ID (up to 32 p rintabl e ASC II char act ers) i s the un ique name identified in a WLAN.
Parameter D escription Network T y pe Infr astr uctu re – This operation mode requir es the presence of a n 802.1 1 Access Point. All communication is done via the Access Point or Router .
Authentication vs. Security Parameter D escription Authentication T ype This setting has to be con sistent with th e wirele ss networ ks that the card intends to connect to. All security keys within a network must match t o allow success ful communica t ions.
Parameter D escription Encryption Mode None – Disable the WEP Data Encryption. WEP – Enable the WEP Data Encryption. When the item is selected, you have to continue setting the WEP En cryption keys.
3.3 Link Status From the “Link Status” option, you can view all the information of the network you are connecting to. You can use this tool in while at the same time repositioning the Hi-Gain antenna to find the optimal location for antenna placement.
Signal S trength This bar shows the signal strength level. The higher percentage shown in the bar , the more radio signal been received by the c ard. This indicator he lps to find the prop er position of the wireless device for quality network operat ion.
3.4 Statistics This option enabl es y ou to v i ew the a v ail able s tat is tic information with its Tx counts (Tx succ es s, Tx error, RTS Success and RTS Failed), and its Rx counts (Rx su ccess, Rx erro r). You may r eset the counters by clicking ”Reset Counter”.
3.5 Advanced This option enables you to configure more advanced settings, for example: wireless mode, protection mode and etc. Parameter D escription Wirele ss Mode 802.1 1 B/G mix – If you have a mix of 802.1 1b and 802.1 1g wireless s tations in your network, it is recommended to se tting the card to this mode.
On – Always enable the protection mode. Off – Always disable the protection mode. Parameter D escription ADHOC_OFDM When the netwo rk t ype is in Ad Hoc mode, that the card can only work i n 1 1b data ra te. It is defi ned by W i-F i orga nizat ion.
4 Troubleshooting This chapter provides solutions to problems usually encountered during the ins tallation and operation of the adapter . 1. What is the IEEE 802.1 1g standard? 802.1 1g is the new IEEE standard for high-speed wireless LAN communications that provides for up to 54 Mbp s data r ate in the 2.
6. What is B S S ID ? A s pecific Ad hoc LAN is called a Basic Service Set (BSS). Computers in a BSS must be configure d with the same BSS ID. 7. What is W E P ? WEP is Wired Equivalent Privacy , a data privacy mechanism based on a 40 bit shared key algorithm, as described in th e IEEE 802 .
13. What is Sprea d Spectrum ? S pread S pectrum technology is a wideband radio frequency technique developed by the military for use in rel iable, secure, missio n-critical commun ication systems. I t is de signed to trade o ff bandwidth e fficiency for reliability , integrity , and security .
