1-3 Features The S20BLK Power Conditioner ’ s major features are described in the following paragraphs. Communications and Management A universal serial bus (USB) port, RS-232 port, and Network Managem ent Card (embedded W eb server) provide m ultiple methods for monitoring and managi ng the S20BLK, and the equipment connected to it.
1-4 Network Management Card An Ethernet port is located on the S20BLK rear panel, and enables the S20BLK’ s embedded Network Management Card (NMC) to connect to any Ethernet network. The NMC (W eb server) enables users to re motely monitor and mana g e th e S20BLK from any W eb browser .
1-5 Isolated Noise Filter Banks The S20BLK isolated noise filer banks (I NFB) eliminate electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI and RFI) that , when severe enough, can negatively impact sound and video quality .

1-7 V acuum Fluorescent Display The vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) conveys unit and power statu s information. It is also used to display information when changing unit settings. Note: The VFD and light emitting diod es (LEDs) can be dimmed or turned off independently of ea ch other via the front control panel SETUP push button .
1-8 Down Arr o w Push Button This pushbutton is used to change (decrease or turn off) parameters for various user-selectable settings such as: Audible Alarms, Sensitivit y , Display Dimmer , LED Dimmer , Go T o Bat If, Outlet 1 & 2 Delay (in seconds), Low Bat W arning, Bat Rep Date , and so on.
1-9 Rear Panel Controls and Connectors The rear panel connectors for the S20BLK Conditioner are shown in Figure 3. Each numbered callout corresponds to a numbered descripti on in th e list that follows Figure 3.
1-10 Outlets - These include the two rows of six outlets (total of 12 outlets) on the rear of the S T ype Power Conditioner , shown in Figure 3. These outlets are arranged based on the type of filteri.
1-11 CIRCUIT BREAKER – A press-to-r eset ci rcuit breaker is prov id ed. When it is “tripped ” due to an electrical surge or overload, it pops out and shuts down output power to the ou tlets. T o reset the Circuit Breaker , press it in. Caution: When resetting the Circuit Breaker, push the button in quickly, and release the button.
1-12 RS-232 Port The RS-232 serial port allows you to monito r and m anage the S20BLK, and also provides the ability to integrate the S20BLK into your home automation network . Note: This port can only b e functi onal when the USB cable is not connected to the S20BLK.

2-2 Inst alling the Unit The S20BLK may be installed on a flat, solid surface or rack-mounted. Proper placement of the S20BLK should be accomplished in accordance with the following proced ures: Inst alling the Unit on a Flat Surface Place the unit on a solid, flat surface that is capable of supporting at least 60 lbs.
2-3 Inserting and Connecting the Battery In accordance with APC’ s interpretation of Department of T ransportation regulations, APC ships this device with the in ternal battery pack disconnected. The front bezel of the unit is also not attached to the unit when it is sh ipped.

Install the front bezel , as shown in Figure 6, by aligning the four pins located on the back-side of the bezel with the holes in the left and right sides of the unit.
2-5 Powering On and Connecting Equipment 1. Power on the S20BLK unit and perform system test. 2. Connect the equipment. 3. Connect the data line cables.

2-7 SELFTEST RESUL T ; SELFTEST HAS P ASSED — Figure 13 displays the message TEST HAS P ASSED , which indicates that self-test ran successfully to completion. If the messag e T EST HAS F AILED is displayed, please contact APC T echnical Support. Figure 13.
2-8 S t atus and Informational Screens The following paragraphs describe the vari ous status and informationa l screens that are available w ith the S20BLK.
2-9 EST. RUNTIME: XHRS; FUEL: XXX% This message is show n in Figure 17. Each un it can also display the estimated runtime as EST . RUNTIME (in hou rs), as well as the FUEL capacity of the internal battery pack (as a percentage) based on the tota l load connected to the device.
2-10 SOURCE: XXXXXXX; EST. RUNTIME: XHRS Screen This screen, shown previously in Fig ure 19, indicates which type of sour ce the unit is deriving power from ( UTILITY , BA TTERY , or ST ANDBY ). It also displays the EST . RU NTIME (in hours) based on the power source, and connected equipment LOAD .
2-11 Model Number and Serial Number Screen This screen, shown in Figure 22, provides informat ion about th e S20BLK that you have purchased. It also provides the correct serial number for the uni t. Note: Always have this information available any time you contact APC Technical Support.
2-12 Outlet Status Screens The two screens in Figures 25 and 26 sh ow which of the four outlet banks are turned on or off. The outlet banks can be turned on or of f independently via the RS-232 serial port, which is located on the rear of the unit. In th e near future this capability will also be available via the W eb.
2-13 S20BLK Setup Y ou can use the front panel SETUP and Arrow Up/Down pushbuttons to configure (turn on or off) various functions provi ded by each S20BLK unit. When you press the SETUP pushbutton, the unit fu nctions are displayed in the followin g order: 1.
2-14 AUDIBLE ALARM Setting – When the alarm is set to ON , as shown in Figure 27, it indicates an abnormal conditio n with the power or unit. It provides an audible tone (beep) whenever the unit detects an internal pr oblem, or a problem wi th an externally connected battery pack.
2-15 Figure 29. DISPLAY DIMM ER (HIGH) Setting Screen LED DIMMER Setting — This screen, shown in Figure 30, lets you set a brightness level of HIGH , LOW , or OFF for the front-panel light emitting diode (LED) indicators. Use the SETUP pushbutton to advance to the LED DIMMER screen (not shown).
2-16 OUTLET DE LA Y1 and OUTLET DELA Y2 — These settings let you set a defined time delay ( 0 to 10 seconds) for when the unit provides power to the rear panel outlet marked Switched Delayed1 ( TUNER/AUX ), or Switched Delayed2 ( SUBWOOFER and/or AMPLIFIE R ).
2-17 Figure 36. DO QUIK SELFTEST Screen DO RUNTIME CAL Setting — This function, show n in Figure 37, allows you to manually initiate a Runtime Calculation test to calibrate internal measurements, which should result in more accurate runt ime estimates.
2-18 SCREEN SA VER: ON/OFF Setting — This function, shown in Figure 40, allows you to force the unit to continuously alternate a message S20 POWER CONDITIONER WITH BA TTER Y BACKUP between the two li nes of fi elds on the VFD. This feature h elps to maintain disp lay quality , as well as extendin g the life of the VFD.
3-1 Chapter 3 T roubleshooting This chapter describes some possib le problems that might occur , and the probable causes and solutions. They include: 1. Unit will not turn on. 2. The AV equipment connected to the S Type unit re boots or turns of f during or after the unit switches to bat tery powe r.
3-2 Connected equipment reboot s or turns off during or after the unit is on battery power Note: The unit will not turn on and a ccept incoming utility power if the power is out of range. The unit can still be "cold-started" using battery power by pressing and ho lding the power switch in until the unit beeps.

3-4 Limited W arranty American Power Conversion (APC) warrants it s products to be free from defects in materials and work mansh ip for a period of two years from the da te of purchase. Its obligation under this warranty is lim it ed to repairing or replacing, at its own sole option, any such d efective products.
