Follow ing the table are instructions for changing the settings. Fo r a comp lete list of the test tool’s adjustable settings, refer to the later section “Setup.

All tests except the w ire map test may produce results with an asterisk when the asterisk is required by the selected test standard.

I f you are using a sm art remo te unit, turn its rotary switch to O N. 2. Use a 2m patch cable of the correct impedance to connect the rem ote to the far end of the cable link.

Getting Starte d Rotary Switch 2 2-17 Autotest Autotest is the m ost frequently used function in LA N cable testing. A utotest performs all of the tests necessary to qualify the cable y ou are testing. When the Autotest is com plete, the tests that were run are listed with the ov erall result for each test.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 2-18 The following tests apply to coaxial cable: • I mpedance: Measures the im pedance of the cable. • Resistance: Measures the loop resistance of the cable, shield, and terminator. • Length: Measures the leng th of unterminated cables.
Getting Starte d Rotary Switch 2 2-19 Setup Allows you to do the following : • Select a test standard and cable type. • Select an averag e cable temp erature when tem perature is required by the selected test standard. • Set the test tool to test cable installed in conduit when a conduit setting is required by the selected test standard.

Also allows editing of the report identification information. Special Functions Allows you to do the following : • View or delete test reports saved in m emory .
Getting Starte d Turning On the Test Tool 2 2-21 Selecting a Language for Displays and Reports The test tool displays results and prints reports in English, Germ an, French, Spanish, and Italian. To select a language for display s and reports, proceed as follows: 1.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 2-22 Overvoltage Test The test tool periodically checks for dc v oltages on the cable connected to the RJ45 jack. A dc voltag e means that the test tool is connected to an activ e telephone cable or other power source. If v oltage is detected, the following messag e appears: WARNING! EXCESSIVE VOLTAGE DETECTED AT INPUT .

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 2-24 Selecting a Test Standard and Cable Type The test standard and cable type you select determ ine which standards are used and which tests are run during cable testing . The test tool is equipped with information for all the com m on test standards and cable types.
Getting Starte d Configuring the Test Tool 2 2-25 An increase in cable tem perature causes an increase in attenuation. To compensate for this increase, the test tool uses the temperature y ou select to m odify the attenuation test limits.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 2-28 Setting the Power-Down Time r To extend battery life, y ou can set the power- down tim er to automatically switch the test tool to a low-power m ode after a selected period of inactivity. You can also disable the power- down tim er.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-2 Autotest on Twisted Pair Cable The procedures for an Autotest on shielded and unshielded twisted pair cable are the same. When shielded cable is selected, the test tool perform s an additional test for shield continuity if the shield test is enabled in SETUP .

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-8 Resistance The resistance test measures the dc loop resistance for each cable pair. The resistance results screen displays the resistance, lim it, and pass/fail result for each cable pair. A PASS result means that the m easured resistance is less than the limit.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-10 Attenuation Note Incorrect conduit or temperature settings can cause false attenuation results. You can change these settings in the SETUP mode, as described in “Configuring the Test Tool” in Chapter 2. The attenuation test measures the loss of sig nal strength ov er the length of the cable.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-12 NEXT Test The NEXT test measures the crosstalk between cable pairs. This crosstalk v alue is expressed as the difference in amplitude (in dB ) between the test signal and the crosstalk sig nal. NEXT is m easured from the m ain-unit end of the cable over a frequency rang e defined by the selected test standard.

Return Loss (RL) The R L test m easures the difference between a test signal’s amplitude and the amplitude of sig nal reflections returned by the cable.

Autotest Autotest on Coaxial Cable 3 3-19 PSNEXT (Power Sum NEXT; M odel DSP-2000) The PSNEXT results show how m uch each cable pair is affected by the com bined NEXT from the other pairs. PSNEXT is expressed as the difference in am plitude (in dB) between the crosstalk received on a cable pair and a test sig nal transmitted on the other pairs.

Autotest Autotest Results for Coaxial Cable 3 3-21 1. Turn off any PC nodes connected to the cable y ou are testing. 2. If y ou want the Autotest to report cable length, rem ove the terminator from the far end of the cable. 3. Turn the rotary switch to A UTOTEST.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-22 Resistance The resistance test measures the loop resistance of the cable and the term inator. If a terminator is not connected or if the cable is open, the resistance v alue is reported as OPEN . I f the cable or the term inator is shorted, the resistance value is reported as near 0 Ω .
Autotest Saving Autotest Results 3 3-23 Saving Autotest Results The test tool’s mem ory can store the results of 500 or more Autotests, depending on the software version and test standard used. Y ou can save the results from an Autotest anytim e after the Autotest is complete, but before another A utotest or a Single Test is started.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 3-26 The result printed on a report summ ary can be a pass or fail, or warning. A failure of any test required by the selected test standard produces a fail result on the report summ ary. A warning appears on reports for twisted pair cable if a length, impedance, propag ation delay, or delay skew test produced a warning.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 4-2 Scanning Function The Single Test versions of the wire m ap, resistance, T DR, and TDX analy zer tests include a scanning function, which y ou can activate by pressing the # Scanning ON softkey . The scanning function runs the test repeatedly and updates the display each tim e a test is com plete.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 4-6 The TDX Analyze r The TDX (Time Dom ain Crosstalk) analyzer display s the locations where crosstalk is occurring on the cable. You can view the test results in a list or plot format. The list form at shows the largest crosstalk v alue detected on the cable.

Figu re 4-2 show s an example of a TDX analy zer plot and Table 4- 3 describes the items on the screen.
Running Individual Tests The TDR Test 4 4-9 The TDR Test The TDR (Time Dom ain Reflectometry ) test helps you locate im pedance anomalies on a cable by reporting the locations of sig nal reflections caused by the anomalies. The test locates anomalies caused by problems such as shorts, opens, poor connections, and mism atches in cable types.

If y ou are using a DSP- 100 main unit as a remote, turn the rem ote unit’s rotary switch to S MART R EMOTE.

In an open cable, a signal’s energ y is not dissipated by a terminating im pedance, so the signal bounces back towards the source.

The terminating device is a resistor with a value equal to the cable’s characteristic impedance.
Basic Cable Testing ACR 7 7-19 A negativ e reflection percentage indicates that the polarity of the reflection is the opposite of the original sig nal. Negativ e reflections are caused by abrupt decreases in the cable’s impedance, such as those caused by m ismatches in cable ty pes or shorts on the cable.
