Rapier 48w Sw itch 6 Selecting a Site Befor e y ou install the s witch, r evie w the f ollowing cons iderations about its location. ■ The Rapier 48w s witch r equir es an ambient temperatur e fr om 0º C to 50ºC (32º F to 122º F). ■ There sho uld be adequate fro nt-to-back airflow ar ound the switch and its ven ts .
Installation and Safety Guide 7 Installing the Switch Y ou can install the switch on a lev el surface , such as a desktop or bench, in a standard 19-inch rack, or in a 23-inch rack. The ports on the switch must not be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to Outside Plant or its wiring (NEBS r equir ement).
Rapier 48w Sw itch 8 Rack-mount the switch 1. Ensure the rack has sufficie nt space for the switch and its c ables. For the switch’ s requirements, see “Selecting a Site ” on page 6 . 2. Install cage nuts , if requir ed, so they are ready for the rack-mount scr ews in the follow ing steps.

Rapier 48w Sw itch 10 Applying P o wer to the Switch The specific pow er supp ly r equirements f or the Ra pier 48w ar e clearly displa yed on the r ear of the switch. If the supply is o utside the accepted range f or the switch, the swit ch ma y not operate or damage to the switch ma y result.
Installation and Safety Guide 11 Rapier 48w DC switch Follow these instructions when c onnecting the DC s witch variant. Read “Saf ety” on page 23 of this document befor e connecting a DC po wer suppl y . Wa r n i n g Only trained and qualified personnel should connect a DC pow er supply .
Rapier 48w Sw itch 12 Connect the switch to gr ound The pr otective earth connection should be connect ed befor e pr oceeding with the follow ing powe r connections. The primary ground f or the equipment is a two stud gr ounding block (bearing the gr ounding symbol) loca ted on the left rear of the chassis, adjacent to the DC pow er connector .
Installation and Safety Guide 13 3. Connect the A f eed -48 V wire to the scr ew t erminal labelled “A -” on the rear panel of the switch, and use a flat scr ewdriver to tighten the scr ew to a tor que of 0.5 to 0.8 Nm (4.4 to 7.1 lbf in). Ensure no wi re strands pro trude fr om the terminal.
Rapier 48w Sw itch 14 Connecting Data Cables to the Switch Once initial config uration is complete, connect the switch to the netw ork. Wa r n i n g The Ethernet, DS3, T1, and management/asyn ports of the equipment are suitable for connection to intra-build ing or unexposed wiring or cabling only .
Installation and Safety Guide 15 The SFP transceiv er must be inserted the right wa y in the slot: ■ T o install an SFP in port 49 (upper), the release l ev er hinge m ust be at the bottom. ■ T o install an SFP in port 50 (lower), the releas e lev er hinge must be at the top.
Rapier 48w Sw itch 16 Configuring the Switch The Rapier 48w sw itch can be configur ed with the Command Line Interface (CLI). Befor e configuring the switch, y ou must mak e some basic connections explained in the f ollowing pr ocedure. Befor e starting the pr ocedur e, ensure that the switch is installed and operating.
Installation and Safety Guide 17 4. Change the passw ord. Change the passw o rd as soon as po ssible because a manager account with the default pass wo rd is a serious secu rity risk. Remember the new passw ord because ther e is no wa y to re triev e it if you forget it.
