Make sure the ON LINE indicator i s lit (P age 8) and the operator access door is closed, and then send a file from the host computer to the printer: • If the print is too lig ht or too dark (smudged), or if some dots are not being pr inted, adjust the printhead g ap.

Operator's Guide 7 SWITCH PA NEL The swit ch panel is located at the r ight-front corner of the printer. The switch panel contains four indicator l ights and four key pad switches. JB0-BD PA PER Paper Out (Fault) Indicator . Glows amber w hen the printer i s out of paper.

Operator's Guide 15 BA SIC CONNECTIONS POWER RECEPTA CLE The power receptacle is l ocated at the left-rear corner of the printer, below the power on/off switch. DA0-H One end of the power cord pl ugs into the lower portion of the receptacle. The other end of the power cor d plugs into a standard three- prong, g rounded electrical outlet.
16 Basics INTERFA CE CONNECTORS Serial Parallel JB0-AA1 Serial and par allel inter face connectors are located near the ri ght-rear corner of the printer.
Operator's Guide 17 Serial Interface The serial i nterface connector is a standard R S-232, 25-pin, D- type connector. Normall y, thumbscrew s attached to the cable connector are used to lock the cable connector to the pri nter connector. For more information on seri al connectiv ity, see Appendi x B.
18 Basics Three sets of low-high beeps are heard when a paper jam occurs. 4S e c Four-second solid beep is heard when: • Paper runs out* • Left tractor is too f a r right • Paper out sensor fails ... Intermittent single beeps are heard when a string of bad data is received on serial interface.

22 Operations To load paper, follow these steps: 1. Open operator access door. 2. If you plan on loading the same type of paper, note the setting of the printhead g ap adjustment lev er and then move pr inthead gap adjustment lev er towar d you (aw ay from paper), as far as possible.

Operator's Guide 25 Left Tractor JB0-L1 6. Align paper on tractor sprockets. M ake sure that the paper is strai ght. 7. Adjust the position of the rig ht tractor so that the paper is neither stressed nor buckled. The sprocket pins should sit comfortabl y in the middle of the paper's sprocket holes.

Operator's Guide 27 Printhead Gap Adjustment Lever JB0-AJ1 Adjust the printhead g ap adjustment lev er for desired print q uality. Note : The ideal setting of the printhead gap adjustment lev er for longest ribbon and printhead li fe is just before printed dots begin to disappear .

Operator's Guide 29 SETTING TOP OF FORM Note : The configuration menu option for form leng th must be set correctly before setting the top of form. (The factory default form length is 11 in.: usually set to correspond to 11 in. between hori zontal perforations.

Operator's Guide 31 SWITCHING NLQ A ND DRA FT You can sw itch back-and-forth betw een near letter quali ty (N LQ) and draft qualit y pri nt modes by pressi ng and holding ON LINE and then momentarily pressing NLQ : + In NLQ mode, the NLQ indicator lights.
32 Operations Emulations and Printer Drivers W hen a printer acts like another pr inter, it i s said to emulate that pri nter. Your pr inter can emulate an Epson FX -100, IBM Propr inter X L, or DEC LA210 printer. You can sw itch betw een emulations, as detailed i n "Changing Emulations" that follows.
Operator's Guide 33 CHA NGING EMULA TIONS The factory default startup emulati on is Epson FX-100 , w hich means that the printer acts l ike an Epson FX- 100 printer after y ou turn on the power. You can change the default star tup emulation using the configuration menu.

For this feature, the activ e character set is defined as the menu-selected default character set along with any active overl ays (O CR A, OCR B, download char acters).

42 Operations What Is a Charact er Set? A character set consists of up to 256 pri ntable patterns and printer instructions assig ned to 256 possible codes. The character set tells the printer w hat to do or what to print w hen each of these codes is receiv ed from the computer.
Configuration This section prov ides details on using the pr inter’s config uration menu. Among other thi ngs, the configur ation menu contains the printer ’s changeable configur ation settings.
46 Configurati on Formatted data files, such as what MS- W indows, or W ordPerfect, or Lotus 1-2-3, or another modern softwar e application w ould send to the printer, contai ns control commands * imbedded w ith the text to change many of the configurati on settings to something other than the factory or customized defaults.

50 Configurati on A DJUSTING THE PRINTER’S PERFORMA NCE The best method for adjusting the pr inter’s per formance to match your needs is to: 1. Make interface changes (phy sical printer connections). 2. Make emulation chang es (printer behavior : IBM, Epson, or DEC).
Operator's Guide 51 Howev er, because printer driv ers do not or cannot change some printer settings, such as the inter face or emulation, those settings ar e important to the printer’s function. These setting s must be correctly set as default settings so they are in effect when the printer is turned on.

58 Configurati on Source: This is the memory sour ce of the character or control code. The two possibilities are ROM and RAM: • ROM stands for read onl y memor y w hich is permanent memory . • RAM stands for random access memor y w hich is temporary memory.

64 Configurati on 7 Bits: Limits the printer's ability to handle gr aphics and restricts it to accessing only the lower character and contr ol data bytes ( 0-127) in the character sets.
Operator's Guide 65 Stop Bits Pressing YES pr ints out the present stop bit status: • 1 Bit (factory default) • 2 Bits The printer uses the stop bi t(s) to detect the space in-betw een data bytes. The stop bit follow s the parity bit if parity is enabled.
66 Configurati on computer using uni vers al control commands. Y ou can then specify up to 128 custom characters. Even if y ou do not intend to downl oad custom characters, mi nimiz ing the input buffer to 532 bytes has some side-effect advantages.

68 Configurati on On: The printer pr ints near letter q uality (NLQ) characters in 10 12, and 15 pitch (10, 12, and 15 char/i n.). NLQ character s have about tw o to three times the dot density of draft quality characters. N LQ characters are more attractiv e than comparable draft quality characters.
Operator's Guide 69 Bold Print Pressing YES pr ints out the activ e interface setting: • Off (f actory default) • On Off: The printer prints standard nor mal-w e ight characters. On: The printer pr ints bolded character s. Bold (or emphasi zed) characters appear "fatter" than normal-w eight char acters.
70 Configurati on Note : Character s can only be italici zed in the Epson emul ation. Also, barcodes and optical char acter recogni tion (OCR ) fonts cannot be italicized. Subscript/Superscript Pressing YES enabl es you to include subscr ipts and superscri pts in your text.

72 Configurati on Lines/Inch Pressing YES pr ints out the activ e line space setting: • 6 lpi (factory default) • 8 lpi This sets the number of lines per verti cal inch. For an 11 i n. form, the printer pr ints a maxi mum of 66 lines at 6 lpi or 88 at 8 lpi.
Operator's Guide 73 Skip Perf Pressing YES pr ints out: • Off (f actory default) • On Off: The printer prints across the hori zontal per foration, unless instructed otherw ise by the computer 's software applic ation. This is the pr eferred setting i n most instances.
74 Configurati on On: The printer automati cally supplies a line feed for every carriag e return command from the computer. ( Sometimes referred to as Auto Line Feed.
Operator's Guide 75 Paper Jam Detect Pressing YES pr ints out: • Off • On (factory default) The printer uses a paper motion sensor on top of the left tractor to detect paper jams. If the paper is supposed to mov e but it does not, then the printer flashes the PA PER indicator and sounds the beeper.

Although only one character set can be the default character set for the Epson emulation, y ou can assign a national -use character map or a code page default for each of the three.
