6 Introduction Introduction Your Epson ® LX-300+II printer provides high-quality printing and superior performance i n a compact design. This 9-pin dot matrix printer provides: ❏ A variety of paper paths to suit your printing needs.
Introduction 7 ❏ Chapter 5, “Options and Consum ables,” describes how to use options such as the roll paper holder and cut-sheet feeder, and explains how to replace the ribbon cartridge. ❏ Chapter 6, “Product Informatio n,” contains technical information about the printer.
8 Introduction When setting up the printer ❏ Do not place the printer on an unstable surface or near a radiator or heat source. ❏ Place the printer on a flat, stable surface.
Introduction 9 When operating the printer ❏ Adjust only those controls that are covered in the user documentation. Improper adjust ment of other controls may result in damage requiring ex tensive repair by a qualified technician.
10 Introdu ction When maintaining the printer ❏ Unplug the printer before cleaning it, and alw ays clean it with a damp cloth only. ❏ Do not spill liquid onto the printer. ❏ Except as specifically explai ned in this manual, do not attempt to service the printer yourself.
Paper Handling 11 Chapter 1 Paper Handling Your printer can handle continuous paper in either the push or the pull position, as well as single sheets and special papers such as labels and envelopes. For instructions on using continuous paper, see the following section.
12 Paper Handling Printing with the push tractor Follow these steps to load contin uous paper on the push tractor: 1. Turn off the printer. 2. Remove the printer cover and the paper guide, and pull th e paper release lever forward to the continuous paper position.
Paper Handling 13 4. Slide the left sprocket so the pins are aligned with the 0 mark on the printer scale (which is beneath the tractor). Push the lock lever back to lock it in place. Then slide th e right sprocket to match the width of yo ur paper, but do not lock it.
14 Paper Handling 8. To separate the incoming pa per from the printed paper, attach the paper guide by holdin g it horizont ally and fitting its notches over the printer’s mounting posts as shown below. Then slide the paper guide toward the front of the printer until you feel it click.
Paper Handling 15 Removing a print ed document fro m the push t ractor Follow these steps to remove the printed document: 1. Press the Tear Off (Font) button. The Tear Off (Font) lights start flashing. (This indicates that your pape r is at the current tear-off position.
16 Paper Handling To feed continuo us paper back ward to the standby position, where you can remove the paper, first tear off any printed sheets. Then press the Load/Eject button. Open the sprocket covers on the tractor and remove the paper. c Caution: Always tear off your printed document before you press the Load/Eject button.
Paper Handling 17 Printing with the pull tractor To load continuous paper using th e pull tractor, you must move the tractor to the pull tractor po sition, as described below. If your tractor is already installed in this position, make sure the printer is turned off and skip to step 6.
18 Paper Handling 5. To remove the tractor from the push position, gently squeeze the lock tabs on both sides and then rotate the tractor up to pull it away from the printer. 6. Lower the tractor onto the moun ting slots at the top of the printer as shown below, and tilt it back until you fe el it lock into place.
Paper Handling 19 7. Unlock the sprockets by pulling the bl ue lock levers forward. 8. Feed the paper into the rear paper slot as shown below, and pull it up. Position the paper using the scale on the printer as a guide. Printing starts to the right of the position marked 0 (under the paper now).
20 Paper Handling 9. Slide the left sprocket so its pins are aligned with the holes in the paper and push the blue lock lever to lock the sprocket in place. Then slid e the right sp rocket to match the width of your paper, but do not lock it. Move the paper supports midway between the two sprockets.
Paper Handling 21 11. To separate the incoming pa per from the printed paper, attach the paper guide. Hold it horizontally and fit its notches over the printer’s mounting posts. Then slide the paper guide toward the back of the printer until you feel it click.
22 Paper Handling Adjusting the top-of-form position The top-of-form position is the position on the page where the printer starts printing. If your printing appears too high or too low on the page, you can use the Micro Adjust mode to adjust the top-of-form position.
Paper Handling 23 Note: ❏ The printer has a minimum and a maximum top-of-form position. If you try to adjust it beyond these limits, the printer beeps and stops moving the paper. ❏ When the paper reaches the defa ult top-of-form position, the printer beeps and stops moving the paper briefly.
24 Paper Handling You can use the tear-off feature in two ways: ❏ Manually, by pressing the printer’s Tear Off (Font) button ❏ Automatically, by turning on th e Auto tear-off function in Default-setting mode. Using the Tear Off button After the printer finishes printing your document, check tha t the Tear Off (Font) lights are n ot flashing.
Paper Handling 25 Adjusting the tear- off position If your paper’s perforation is not aligned with the tear-off edge, you can use the Micro Adjust mode to move the perforation to the tear-off position. Follow these steps: 1. Make sure the Tear Off (Font) lights are flashing.
26 Paper Handling 5. After you set the tear-off position, press the Paus e button to exit Micro Adjust mode. 6. Tear off the printed page s. When you resume printing, the printer automatically feeds the paper back to the top-of-form position and begins printing.
Paper Handling 27 Follow these steps to load a single sheet: 1. If continuous paper is loaded in the push tractor, press the Load/Eject button to feed it back to the standby position. 2. Push the paper release lever back to the single-sheet position and make sure the paper guide is in th e upright position, as shown below.
28 Paper Handling 4. Insert a sheet of paper between the edge guides until it meets resista nce. The printe r au tomatically pulls it into the correct printing position. When the printer receives data, it begins printing. If the document is more than one page, the printer beeps three times after printing each page.
Paper Handling 29 Printing on Special Paper With the LX-300+II, you can print on a wid e variety of special paper types, including multipar t forms, labels, and envelopes.
30 Paper Handling 2. The numbers next to the leve r indicate the thickness setting. Use the table below to sele ct the appropriate paper thickness. 3. Close the printer cover. Multipart forms You can use continuous or single-sheet carbonles s multipart forms of up to five parts (one or iginal plus four copies).
Paper Handling 31 ❏ If you need to adjust the loading position, use your application software, or chan ge the loading position as described on page 22. ❏ When you use side-crimped conti nuous multipart forms, the copies may not align with the or iginal.
32 Paper Handling ❏ To remove the labels from th e printer, tear off the fresh supply at the back of the printer; then press the LF/FF button to advance the remaining labels out of th e printer. c Caution: Never feed labels back ward th rough th e prin t er; they can easily peel off the backing sheet and jam the printer.
Using the Prin ter Software 33 Chapter 2 Using the Printer Software The Epson software includes the printer driver software and EPSON Status Monitor 3. The printer driver allows your computer to control the printer and enables your Windows software applications to take full advantage of the pri nter’s capabilities.
34 Using the Printer Software Accessing the Printer Driver You can access the printer driver from your Windows applications or from the Start menu: ❏ When you access the printer driver from a Windows application, any settings you make apply only to the application you are using.
Using the Prin ter Software 35 2. Make sure your printer is se lected in the Name drop-down list: 3. Click Printer , Setup , Properties , or Options . (The button you click depends on your app lication and you may need to click a combination of these buttons.
36 Using the Printer Software From the Start menu Follow these steps to access the printer driver from the Start menu: 1. For Windows 98, Me, 2000, or NT, click Start > Settings > Printers . For Windows XP Professional, click Start > Setting s > Printers and Faxes .

You see the Document Properties window: In Windows 2000, XP, or NT, you can also click Properties to display the Properties window: 3.
38 Using the Printer Software Changing the Printer Driver Settings The following table shows the prin ter driver settings. Note that not every setting is available in all versions of Windows. Setting Explanation Paper Size Select the paper size you want to use.
Using the Prin ter Software 39 * See Windows Help for more information. Printer Font Settin g Select a character table group to use: Standard , Expanded , and None (Bit Image printing). When Standard or Expanded is selected, the pri nter uses the device fonts.
40 Using the Printer Software Defining a custom paper size If your paper is not included in the Paper Size drop-down list, you can add the size to the list. For Windows 98 and Me: Click Custom or User Defined Size and enter the paper size in the window that appears.
Using the Prin ter Software 41 Monitoring settings Using EPSON Status Monitor 3 EPSON Status Monitor 3 allows you to monitor your printer’s status, alerts you when printe r errors occur, and provides troubleshooting instructions when needed.
42 Using the Printer Software Setting up EPSON Status Monitor 3 Follow these steps to set up Status Monitor 3: 1. Open the printer driver and select the Utility menu.

44 Using the Printer Software Installing EPSON Status Monitor 3 If you need to install Status Monitor 3, you can either down load it from Epson’s web site; or if you have the Printer Software CD-ROM, you can follow these steps: 1. Make sure the printer is off and Windows is running on your computer.
Using the Prin ter Software 45 Setting Up Your Printer on a Network If the printer will be shared over a standard Windows network, follow the instructions in this section to set up the printer server and client computers.
46 Using the Printer Software Windows 98 or Me Follow these steps to set up the printer server in Windows 98 or Me: 1. Click Start > Setting s > Control Panel . 2. Double-click the Netw ork icon. 3. Click the File and Print Sharing button on the Configuration menu.
Using the Prin ter Software 47 Note: ❏ Do not use spaces or hyphens fo r the share name, or an error may occur. ❏ When sharing the printer, be sure to set EPSON Status Monitor 3 so that the shared pr inter can be monitored on the server. See “Setting up EPS ON Status Monitor 3” on page 42.
48 Using the Printer Software If you see the following message in Windows XP, click either Network Setup Wizard or If you understand the security risks but want to share printers without running the wizard, click here. In either case, follow the on-scree n instructions.
Using the Prin ter Software 49 In Windows XP, select Share this printer , then type the name in the Share name box and click OK . Note: Do not use spaces or hyphens for the share name. Follow the instructions on page 49 to set up the client computers so they can use the printer on a network.
50 Using the Printer Software Note: ❏ This section describes how to access the shared printer on a standard network system using th e server (Microsoft workgroup). If you cannot access the shared printer due to the network system, ask your network admini strator for assistance.
Using the Prin ter Software 51 5. Click the computer or server that is connected to the shared printer, and the name of the shared printer. Then click OK . Note: The name of the shared printer ma y be changed by the computer or server it is connected to.
52 Using the Printer Software Note: You can change the shared printer’ s name so that it appears only on the client computer. Windows 2000 or XP Follow the steps below to set up clients in Win dows 2000 or XP.
Using the Prin ter Software 53 3. Select Network printer (for Windows 200 0) or A network printer, or a printer atta ched to another computer (for Windows XP), then click Next . 4. For Windows 2000 , select Type the printer name, or click Next to browse for a printer , then click Next .
54 Using the Printer Software 5. Click the icon of the computer or server that is connected to the shared printer, and the name of the shared pri nter. Then click Next . Note: ❏ The name of the shared printer may be changed by the computer or server that is connec ted to the shared printer.
Using the Prin ter Software 55 6. For Windows 2000, select whether to use the printer as the default printer, then click OK . For Windows XP, if another driver is already installed, select whether to use the printer as th e default printer, then click OK .
56 Using the Printer Software 4. Click the icon of the computer or server that is connected to the shared printer and the name of the shared printer. Then click OK . Note: ❏ You can also type “(the name of the computer that is locally connected to the shared printer) (the shared printer’s name)” in Network path or queue na me.
Using the Prin ter Software 57 Installing the printer dr iver from the CD-ROM This section describes how to install the printer driver on the clients when the server and clients use different operating systems. Note: When installing on Windows 2000, XP, or NT cli ents, you must access Windows as th e Administrator.
58 Using the Printer Software The folder name depe nds on which operating system is being used. 3. Select the name of the printer, and click OK . Then follow the on-screen instructions. Note: If you also want to install EPSON Status Monitor 3, see page 44 for instructions.
Using the Prin ter Software 59 To cancel printing of all documents, select Purge Print Documents (Windows 98 or Me) or Cancel All Documents (Windows 2000, XP, or NT) on the Printer menu. Uninstalling the Printer Software If you need to reinstall or upgrade the printer driver, first uninstall the current printer driver.
60 Using the Printer Software 4. Select EPSON Printer Software , and click Add/Remove or Change/Re move . 5. On the Printer Model tab, select the LX-300+II icon, and click OK .

Note: You can uninstal l only the Monitored Printers utility of EPSON Status Monitor 3. When the utility is uninstalled, you cannot change the setting of Monitored Printers fr om Status Monitor 3.
62 Using the Printer Software 2. Select EPSON USB Printer Devices , and click Add/Remove . Note: ❏ EPSON USB Printer Devices appea rs only in Windows 98 or Me when the printer is connec ted to the computer with a USB interface cable. ❏ If the USB device driver is not installed correctly, EPSON USB Printer Devices may not appear.
Using the Control Panel 63 Chapter 3 Using the Control Panel The buttons and lights on the control panel let you: ❏ Adjust line and form feeding ❏ Load and eject paper ❏ Select a built-in font .
64 Using the Control Panel 2 Tear Off (Font) button ❏ Advances continuous paper to the tear-off position. ❏ Feeds continuous paper backward from the tear-off position to the top-of-form position. ❏ In Micro Adjust mode, selects one of the s ix built-in fonts.
Using the Control Panel 65 6 Paper Out light ❏ On when no paper is loaded in the selected paper source or when paper is not loaded correctly. ❏ Flashes when paper has not be en fully ejected or a paper jam has occurred. 7 Pause light ❏ On when the printer is paused.
66 Using the Control Panel Follow these steps to use the control panel to select a built-in font: 1. Make sure the printer is on but not printing. If it is, wait until it stops. 2. Hold down the Pause button for three seconds to enter Micro Adjust mode.
Using the Control Panel 67 Changing the Default Settings The default settings control many printer functions. While you can often set these functions thro ugh your software or printer driver, you may some times need to change a default settin g from the printer’s control panel using the Default Setting mode.
68 Using the Control Panel Page length for tractor This setting allows you to set the page length (in inches) for continuous paper. Skip over perforation This feature is available only when continuous paper is selected. When you select On , the printer provides a one-inch (25.
Using the Control Panel 69 Auto tear off When Auto tear off is on and you are using continuous paper with the push tractor, the prin ter automatically advances the paper perforation to the tear-off posi tion, where you can easily tear off the printed pages.
70 Using the Control Panel High speed draft When you choose On for High speed draft, the printer prints up to 300 cps (characters per second) at 10 cpi (characters per inch). When you choose Off , the printer prints up to 225 cps at 10 cpi. I/F (interface) mode The printer comes with three kinds of interfaces; parallel, se rial, and USB.
Using the Control Panel 71 Data length Set the data length of the serial interface to 7 bit or 8 bit . See your computer manual and softw are documentation for the proper setting. Parallel I/F bidi rectional mode The parallel interface bidirectiona l transfer mode is used when this feature is turned on.
72 Using the Control Panel Buzzer (beeper) The printer beeps when an error occurs. (See “Using the error indicators” on page 77 for more in formation on printer errors.) If you do not want the printer to b eep when an error occurs, turn this setting off.
Using the Control Panel 73 2. Hold down the Tear Off ( Font ) button and then turn on the printer. The printer enters Default Setting mode and prints instructions for selecting the language. The current language is indicated by which control panel lights are on.
74 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Chapter 4 Maintenance and Troubleshooting This chapter explains how to clean and transport the printer, and provides basic troubl eshooting information. Cleaning the Printer To keep your printer operating at its best, you should clean it thoroughly several times a year.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 75 c Caution: ❏ Never use alcohols or thinn ers to clean the printer; these chemicals can damage the printer components and the case. ❏ Be careful not to get water on to the printer mechanism or electronic components.
76 Maintenance and Troubleshooting 4. Make sure the tractor that comes with your printer is installed in the push position. 5. If an additional pull tractor is installed, remove it. If any options are installed, remove them and pack them in their original boxes.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 77 Using the error indicators If your printer stops working and one or more control panel lights are on or flashing or the printer beeps, use the followin g table to diagnose and fix the pr oblem. If you cannot fix your problem using this table, go to the next section.

80 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Printing The printer does not print The lights come on briefly and th en go off. The lights stay off even when the powe r is turned on again. Cause What to do The voltage ratings of the printer and electrical outlet may no t match.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 81 The Paper Out and Pause lights are on and the printer beeps three times. Cause What to do No paper is loaded. Load paper in the printer. The printer sounds like it is printing, but nothing is printed. Cause What to do The ribbon cartridge may not be installe d properly or the ribbon may be worn out.
82 Maintenance and Troubleshooting The print is faint or uneven Dots are missing in printed characters or graphics Parts of printed characters are missing at the bott om. Cause What to do The ribbon cartridge may not be installed properly . See “Replacing the Ribbon Cartridge” on page 105.

84 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Paper Handling Single sheets do not feed properly The printer’s page length setting may not match the size of the continuous paper you are using. Check the Page length fo r tractor setting in Default Setting mode. See page 68.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 85 Continuous paper does not feed properly Paper feeding is crooke d or the paper jams. Cause What to do The paper was not fed correctly or is the wrong type. Turn off the printer and pull out the paper. Insert a new sheet straight into the paper guide.
86 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Paper feeding is crooked or the paper jams. Cause What to do The paper supply is obstructed. Make sure the paper supply is not obstructed by a cable or some other object. The paper supply is too far away from the printer.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 87 Options When you use the cut-sheet feeder, the paper does not feed properly When you switch between single sheets and continuous paper, the printer beeps three times and the PAUSE light comes on. Cause What to do You may have tried to change the paper release lever position while paper remained in the printer.
88 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Two or more sheets feed at one time. Cause What to do You may have loaded too many sheets in the bin. Remove some sheets. You may not have fanned the stack of paper before loading it into the bin. Remove the paper, fan the stack to separate t he sheets , and r eload it in the bin.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 89 Switching between the cut-sheet feeder and the push tractor does not work properly Using the pull tractor with the push tractor, continuous paper does not feed properly The desired paper type does not load. Cause What to do The paper release le ver may not be in the proper position.
90 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Correcting USB Problems If you are having difficulty usin g your printer with a USB connection, read the information in this section. Make sure that your computer is a Windo w s 98, Me, 2000, or XP pre-installed model Your computer must be a Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP pre- installed model.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 91 If your drivers are correctly installed, EPSON USB Printer Devices should appear on the Device Manager menu. If EPSON USB Printer Devices does not appear on the Device Manager menu, click the plus (+) sign beside Other devices to view the installed devices.
92 Maintenance and Troubleshooting If USB Printer or EPSON LX-300+II does not appear under Other devices , click Refresh or unplug the USB cable from the printer, then plug it into the printer again. 4. Under Other devices , sele ct USB Printer or EPSON LX-300+II and click Remove .
Maintenance and Troubleshooting 93 6. Turn off the printer and restart your computer . Then reinstall the drivers from the beginning, following the instructions in the User’s Guide .
94 Maintenance and Troubleshooting 3. Gently remove any paper insid e the printer, including any torn pieces. You can use the kn ob on the right side of the printer to help feed the paper out. c Caution: Use the paper feed knob to cl ear paper jams only whe n the printer is off.

98 Options and Consumables Chapter 5 Options and Consumables The following options are av ailable for your LX-300+II: ❏ Single-bin cut-sheet feeder (C806371 ) ❏ Additional tractor (C800301) ❏ Ro.
Options and Consumables 99 4. Hold the cut-sheet feeder with both hands and press on the latch levers. Fit the notches in the cut-sheet feeder over the mounting posts on the printer. Releasing the latch levers locks the cut-sheet feeder in place. 5. Slide the left paper guide so it is al igned with the triangle mark.
100 Options and Consumables 6. Pull the paper set levers all the way forward until the paper guides retract and lock open to allow for paper loading. 7. Take a stack of paper and fan it. Then tap the side and bottom of the paper on a flat surface to even up the stack.
Options and Consumables 10 1 12. Attach the paper guide to the cut-sheet feeder as shown below. 13. Slide the left edge guide to the center until it stops at the guide mark.
102 Options and Consumables Optional Tractor You can purchase an additional tractor (C8003 01) and improve the performance of continuous paper handling by using two tractors at the same time. This is especially useful with continuous pre-printed forms and multipart forms.
Options and Consumables 10 3 8. Turn on the printer. Then hold down the LF/FF button to feed one page. 9. Release the sprocket lock levers on the pull tractor and adjust the sprockets to match the width of the paper you are using. Make sure the sprockets on both tractors are aligned so that the paper is not crooked.
104 Options and Consumables Roll Paper Holder The optional roll paper holder (# 8310) allows you to use your printer with 8.5 inch (216 mm) roll paper. Follow these steps to install and use the roll paper holder: 1. Turn off the printer an d remove the paper guide.
Options and Consumables 10 5 5. Set the shaft and paper roll onto the roll paper holder. Orient the roll so that paper feeds from the bottom of the roll. Then turn on the printer. 6. Bring the leading edge of the paper up over the paper path guide for single sheets and insert it into the printer path for single sheets until you feel resistance.
106 Options and Consumables Follow these steps to install or replace the ribb on cartridge: 1. Make sure the prin ter is turned off. w Warning: If you have just used the printer, the print head may be hot; let it cool for a few minutes before re placing the ri bbon cartridge.
Options and Consumables 10 7 6. Insert the ribbon cartridge into the printer as shown; then press both sides of the cartridge firmly to fit the plastic hooks into the printer slots. 7. Use a pointed object, such as a ball point pen, to guide the ribbon between the print head and ribbon guide .
108 Options and Consumables 8. Turn the ribbon-tightening kn ob in the direction of the arrow to help feed the ribbon into place; it should not be twisted or creased.
