6 Getting to Know Your Printer Using the push and pull tracto r in com bination You can impro ve paper feedin g and redu ce paper jam s by using two tract ors at the same time. T his is especially helpful for printin g on continuous pr eprinted forms or multipar t forms and for print ing high-qual ity graphics.
Getting to Know Your Printer 7 Printing on single sheets You can loa d single sheets from the to p or the front of the pr inter. You can loa d ordinary singl e sheets from either position, even with con tin uous pap er alr ead y load ed in th e pus h tra ctor.

1 Setting Up the Prin ter 1-3 You must remove all protecti ve materia ls packed around and ins ide yo ur p rinte r befo re y ou set it up and tu rn on the po wer . Follow the di rections on t he Notice Sheet (packed wit h the prin ter) to rem ove these mate rial s.
1-4 Se tting U p the Prin ter ❏ Avoid electr ical outlets c ontrolled b y wall switches or auto mati c ti mers. An in te rrupt ion in pow er can e rase info rmation in t he memory of your pri nter or computer. Also avoid outlets on the same ci rcuit as l arge motors or other applianc es that can cause voltage fluctuati ons.
1 Setting Up the Prin ter 1-5 Installing or Replacing the Ribbon Cartridge EPSON recommends t he use of genuine E PSON black ri bbon cartrid ges (#7753) or EPSON film r ibbon car tridge (#7768) . Products n ot manufact ured by EPSON may cause damage to your printer no t cover ed by warr anties.
1-6 Se tting U p the Prin ter 3. Lift the print er cover by its back ed ge and then pull it st raight up and off . 4. Push up the tabs o n each side of the paper tension unit and lift the u nit up and off the printer. Store the paper tensio n unit in a safe p lace.

Then slid e the print h ead to the middle of the pri nter by ha nd. 6. If a used r ibbon cartr idge is i nstalle d, grasp the cartrid ge by its handle and pull it straight up .
1-8 Se tting U p the Prin ter 7. Remove the new rib bon cart ridge f rom the package. T urn the ribbon-t ightening knob in the directio n of th e arrow to remove an y slack in t he ribbon.
1 Setting Up the Prin ter 1-9 9. Use a pointed object , such as a bal l point p en, to guid e the ribbon be tween the pr int head and ribbon guide. Turn the ribbon-tigh tening knob to help feed the r ibbon into p lace. 10. Slide the print head from side to side to mak e sure it moves smoothly.

Repl ace the printe r cover by firs t inserti ng the front tab s into the slots on the pr inter and then lo wering the cove r into place.

Check the label o n the back of t he printer to make sure its voltage matches that of your electrical outlet. Also make sure the plug on your pr inter’ s power cord ma tches your ele ctrical outlet.
1-14 Setti ng Up t he Printe r Connecting the Printer to Your Computer Your print er has two separa te interf ace connections: an IEEE-128 4 compatible parall el interf ace and Type B opt ional int erface . See “Opt iona l interfa ce c ards” o n page A -4 for more inform ation.
1 Settin g Up th e Pri nter 1-15 3. Squeeze the wire c lips together u ntil t hey lock in pla ce on both sides of the connector. 4. If your cab le has a ground wi re, connect it to the pr inter’s ground connector as shown below. 5. Plug the ot her end of the cabl e into the co mputer.
1-16 Setti ng Up t he Printe r Installing the Printer Software After you connect the pr inter to your compu ter, you need to instal l the software inc luded on the EPSON pr inter soft ware CD- ROM shi pped wi th your pr inter.
1 Settin g Up th e Pri nter 1-17 ❏ If you wish to make a diskette version of the printer software on your CD-ROM, in sert the CD and run the EPSETUP program. In the dialog box that ap pears, click the Driver d isk c reat ion ut ilit y button and follow the on-screen instructions.
1-18 Setti ng Up t he Printe r Installing the printer software in Windows 3.1 or NT 3.5x Follow the steps below to install the print er software in Windows 3.1 or NT 3 .5x systems. Note: Installing the printer software on Window s NT 3.5x may require network administration pri vileges.

Open the paper gui de cover and remove the paper guide by hol ding bo th edge s and l ifting it up. 3. S et the p ape r rele ase lev er to the pus h tr actor pos iti on.
2-8 P rintin g on Continuous P aper 4. Release the lef t and right sprocket s by pulling the sproc ket lock le vers forw ard. 5. Slide the left sprocket to the left margin of the p aper using t he scale on the p rinter. (Pri nting starts a t the “0” mark .

2-10 Printing on Continuou s Paper 10. Slide the e dge guides t o the middle of th e paper gui de. Then close the pap er gui de cover. 11. Turn on the printer. Y ou may need to check and chang e the pri nter drive r se tting s as desc ribed i n C hapte r 4.
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-11 Removing a printed document from the push tractor To remove the pri nted document, fol low these steps: 1. Make sure the T ear Off/Bin ligh ts are flas hing. (This in dicates you r pape r i s at the cu rre nt te ar-off posi tion.

2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-13 Reinstalling the tractor in the push position If a tract or is insta lled in the p ull posi tion, you need to remove it and install the paper tension unit as descri bed on “Removing the pull tra ctor” on page 2-24 before u sing the push t ractor.
2-14 Printing on Continuou s Paper Using the Tractor in the Pull Position Using the tr actor in the pul l posit ion is ideal for p rinting on thi ck and heavy c ontinuous pap er, such as multi part forms or continuous pap er with labe ls. However, you can not use the tear- off feature with the pull tractor.

Tear off t he supply of c ontinuous labels at the perforat ion nearest the p aper entry slot.

2-30 Printing on Continuou s Paper Switching to printing on continuous paper To switch from print ing on si ngle sheets t o print ing on co ntinuous paper wit h the push tracto r, follow these step s: 1. If a single sheet remains in the printer, press the Load/E ject button t o eject it .
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-31 Adjusting the Top-of -Form Position The top-of-form posi tion is the position on the page where the pri nter star ts p rin ting. If yo ur p rin ting app ears too h igh or lo w on the page, you can use the micr o adjust featur e to adjust the top- of-form position.

2-34 Printing on Continuou s Paper Advanc ing th e Paper to the Tear-O ff Ed ge If you use the push tractor , you can use the tear-off feature to advance yo ur conti nuous pape r to the p rinter’s t ear-of f edge when you finish printing. You ca n then easily tear off the p rinted docu men t.

You can print on ordinary singl e sheets, single-sheet multipart forms, postcards, and envelop es.

Be sure to follow these gu idelines: ❏ Use on ly carb onless mu ltip art forms bo und as shown be low.
