Even if you are familiar wi th oth er typ es of p rin ters, be su re to fo llow thes e pre caut ions carefully t o ensure safe, effici ent operati on.

When you remove t he photoconductor uni t from the printer, always set the unit on a cl ean, smooth surface. Al so, avoid touchi ng the drum, since oi l from your sk in can perm ane nt ly d amag e i ts s urfa ce a nd may aff ect prin t q ual ity.

8 Safety In struct ions For United Kingdom Users The EPSON AcuLaser C8600 is a pa ge printer which util izes a semiconductor laser. There is no possib ility of danger from the la ser, provid ed that the printer is opera ted according to the in struction s in the gu ides provid ed.

Note: Keep all packing materials as you will need them w hen transporting the printer.
Assembling the Printer 11 Installing the Toner Cartridges Before instal ling the to ner cartri dges, read th e following ha ndling precaut ions: ❏ Do n ot in sta ll use d to ner c artri dge s into th e pri nter . ❏ If toner get s onto your ski n or clothe s, wash it off with soap and wa ter im medi ately.
12 Assembli ng the P rinte r 1. Open the f ront cover. 2. Check the colo r in the car tridge instal lment window and prepare t he cartridge o f the same color.
Assembling the Printer 13 3. Take the cart ridge out of its p ackage, and gently shake i t. 4. I nse rt the tone r ca rtrid ge a ll th e way unti l it s tops . 5. Turn the cartridge kn ob as shown bel ow. c Caution: Be sure to turn the knob all the way to the locked position.
14 Assembli ng the P rinte r 6. Push up the switch l ocated at the u p per left, t hen release it . 7. Turn the up per knob clock wise until i t stops. The swi tch automatica lly drops down and the next empty cartri dge slot appears. Note: If the knob cannot be moved, first check that the switch is in the upper position.
Assembling the Printer 15 Installing the Photoconductor Unit Handling precau tions ❏ When installin g the photoco nductor uni t, avoid exposi ng it to room lig ht any longe r than necessa ry. ❏ Keep the phot oconduc tor unit out o f the reach of children.
16 Assembli ng the P rinte r 2. Turn the l ever as shown bel ow. 3. Insert the photocond uctor unit as shown below. Note: Make sure that the unit is completely inserted into the slot.
Assembling the Printer 17 4. Turn the two levers a s shown belo w. 5. Close the front cover. w Warni ng: Do not dispose of used pho toconductor units in fire, as they can explode and cause injury.
18 Installing Options 3 Installing Options If you purchased any opti ons wit h the pr inter, install them before plugging in the printer. To install an optio nal paper ca ssette or optional Duplex Unit, follow the i nstructions on the pr oduct pack age.

20 Installing Options 3. Identify the Hard Disk Dr ive socket. 4. Instal l the Hard Di sk Drive secur ely with t he screws. c Caution: You should not remove any mod ules from the circuit board. Otherwise, the printer will not work. 5. Connect the two connectors of t he cable as shown bel ow.
Installing Options 21 6. Lower the two clamps to inser t the cable, t hen raise the clamps. 7. Return the p rinter t o its orig inal state, as shown below.
22 Installing Options 8. Plug the p rinter’s power cord into an el ectrical outlet. 9. Turn on the printer. 10. To confi rm that the Ha rd Disk Drive is installe d correct ly, print a st atus sheet.
Installing Options 23 Follow these steps t o install an optional memory module. c Caution: Before you install a memory module, be sure to discha rge any static electricity by touching a grounded piece of metal. Otherwise, you may damage static-sensitive components.
24 Installing Options c Caution: ❏ Do not force the DIMM into the slot. ❏ Be sure to insert the DIMM facing the correct way. ❏ You should not remove any modules from the circuit board. Otherwise, the printer will not work. 5. Return th e printer to its o riginal stat e, as shown on page 2 1.
Installing Options 25 3. Identify t he ROM slots. 4. I nse rt the modu le firmly int o slo t A or B , as shown below. c Caution: ❏ Do not force the ROM module into the slot. ❏ Be sure to insert the module facing the correct way. ❏ You should not remove any modules from the circuit board.
26 Installing Options Installing an Interface Card Your printer comes with a Type B i nterface slot. Var ious optional interfa ce cards are ava ilable to expa nd your print er’s interf ace options. Note: Mac OS 8.5.1 t o 9.X supports the T ype B IEEE 1394 I nterface Card (C12C8237 2 ✽ ).
Installing Options 27 4. Slide and push t he interface ca rd into t he slot firmly, t hen fasten the screw as shown below. 5. Plug the pr inter’s power c ord into a n electr ical outl et. 6. T urn o n th e prin ter. 7. To confirm that the int erface card is inst alled correctly, print a status sheet.

Tes ting and Connecting th e Printer 29 Testing the Printer To test whet her the pri nter is set up correct ly, print a status sheet, following t he procedures bel ow. You will have to first lo ad the MP tr ay w ith pa pe r. Loading paper Follow these steps t o load pa per into the MP t ray.
30 Testing and C onnecting the Printer 3. Press the En ter button a gain. The messa ge on the LCD panel star ts flashing and the print er starts pr inting a st atus sheet. 4. Check that the pr inter has prin ted the status sheet clear ly and that the i nfo rmat ion on th e op tion s in stal led in t he pr int er is correct.

N Note: ❏ Use a shielded, twisted-pair parallel cable, or a USB Revision 1.1 complia nt cable. ❏ When the cable has a grounding wire, secure the wi re with the screw below the connector.

Note: If the EPSON Installation Program screen does not appear automa tically, d ouble-clic k the My Co mput er icon, right-click the CD-ROM icon, and clic k Open in the menu that appears.
34 Installing the Printer Software Note for Windows XP users: While you install the p rinter drive r, the foll owing d ialog box may ap pear. If this happens, click Continue Anyway to continue the installation.
Installing the Printer Software 35 c Caution: Turn off any anti-virus software before install ing the printer driver. 1. Make sure that the pr inter is turned off . Insert the CD-ROM that comes wi th your pr inter into your CD -ROM driv e. 2. Double- click the Insta ll Softwar e folder.
36 Installing the Printer Software Selecting your printer in the Chooser After you hav e installed the printer driver, you need to open the Chooser to sele ct your print er. This procedure i s necessary the first time you use a pri nter a nd wh en y ou wa nt to swi tch to another pr inter.
