3 PictureMate Charm TM is your easy-to-us e, personal photo lab. Just insert a dig ital camera memory card and you’re ready to print brilliant , long-lasting photos. Because PictureMate ® is light and portabl e, you can print whenever and wherever you take pictures.
4 Special F eatures Printing with your PictureMate beco mes even easier with these spec ial features: From PictureMate’s photo viewer screen, you can view your photos and press Print to print the ones you want. Or you can select to print all photos.
5 Supported Photo Formats Make sure your photos meet these requireme nts for printing with your PictureMate (without a co mputer): ● JP EG files only ● Resolutions rang ing from 80 × 80 to 92 00 × 92 00 pixels PictureMate recognizes and prints the first 9 ,990 photos on your memory card.
6 PictureMate Buttons Start printing Change the number of photos displayed Turn PictureMate on or of f Display optional settings menu Move through photos and menu options Stop printing or cancel setti.
7 Before you print with PictureMate, you need to: ● Insert your memory card (below) ● Load paper (see page 7) When you finish printing, you can remove your memory card (see page 9). Inserting Your Memory Card 1 Move the handle to the back. Then open the top cover .
8 4 Press the P On button to turn on PictureMate. 5 Insert the memory card in to the correct slot, as shown on the right. Insert just one card at a time. Note: PictureMate can’t read mu ltiple cards at once. 6 Push the card in carefully until it s tops (it won’t go in all the way).
9 Removing Y our Memory Card When you are ready to remo ve a memory card, first make sure the memory card light is not flashing. Caution: Do not rem ove a card while the memory card light is flashing; you may lose photos on y our card. Top slot : Push in the card and re lease it, then pull it straight out of the s lot.
10 3 Slide the edge guides outward. 4 Create a stack of up to 20 sheets of paper and separate the sheets slig htly by fanning them. 5 Place your paper into th e slot between the edge guides with the glossy or white r side up. Slide the edge guides inward slightly.
11 After you inser t your camera’s memory card, PictureMate displays your photos on the photo viewer screen (shown at right). Note: You can adjust th e angle of the photo viewer screen by raising or lowering the top of t he screen. Be sure to lower the screen before closing the p rinter lid.
12 Note: If your memory card has more than 1000 photos, PictureMate divides them into groups of 999. You can select the group you want to view and print. See page 10 for more information. Press the Display button to switch between one photo displaye d with or without text, one p hoto with a “filmstrip” of 5 additional pho tos, or 6 photos.
13 The preview screen shows the layout, number of sheets, and other settings you have chosen, for example: Note: For more in formation about print set tings, see page 17. 6 Press l or r to review your selected photos. If you change your mind, press the Stop/Clear button.
14 2 Press l or r to choose Select Photos , then press OK . 3 Press l or r to highlight Select All Photos , then press OK . 4 If you want more than one copy of each pictu re, press r to increase the number of copies or l to decrease it. 5 T o preview your pho tos, press Print .
15 5 After selectin g all the dates you want, press OK . The photos taken on the selected date(s) appear on the screen. 6 Press l or r to view the selected photos. 7 Follow the steps on page 1 2 to select photos , set the number of copies for each, and print.
16 Storing and Displaying Your PictureMate Photos Photos printed on Pictur eMate photo paper are beautiful and long-lasting . F ollow these guidelines to make sure they will l ook great for generations. Caring for Y o ur Photos ● T o avoid scratches or smudg ing, do not rub the printed side of the photo.
17 By pressing the Menu button, you can: ● Choose from a variety of layouts (see page 1 8) ● Print a proof sheet ( see page 1 9) ● Remove red eyes from your pho tos (see page 1 9) ● Fix photos.
18 Choosing a Layout By default, your photos are printed at the full 4 × 6 size, without borde rs. If you want to print picture s with white borders or place several small pho tos on one sheet of paper , you can use the Layout menu to change the layout.
19 Printing a Proof Sheet Y ou can print small thumbnail images of all the photos on your memory card , 20 images per page. 1 After inserting a card, press Menu . 2 Press l or r to highlight Utility , then press OK . 3 Press l or r to highlight Print Proof Sheet , then press OK .
20 Note: These se ttings affect only your printe d pictures. They do not change your original image files. 1 After inserting a card, press Menu . 2 Press l or r to highlight Basic Print Settings , then press OK . 3 Press l or r to highlight Enhance , then press OK .
21 Adjusting Borderless Expansion When you print borderless pictures, your im ages are automatically expanded an d cropped. If your pict ures are cut off around the edges, y ou can adjust the amou nt of expansion and cropping. 1 Press Menu . 2 Press l or r to highlight Setup , then press OK .
22 5 Press l or r to select B & W or Sepia , then press OK . Y ou can see the ef fect on your photo. Adding Camera Text If your camera allows you to add text to your photos, you can print the pictures along with th e text. This setting is available for borderless photos only.
23 PictureMate can pri nt photos stored on a: ● PictBridge-enabled dig ital camera (this page) ● Bluetooth-enabled device (requ ires an optional Bluetooth Photo Print adapter; see page 24). Printing From a Digi tal Camera Y ou can connect a digital camera that supports PictBridge prin ting to PictureMate and use the camera to control printing.
24 Printing Wirelessl y From a Bluetooth Device Y ou can print photos wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled P D A , cell phone, or computer wh en you use the op tional Bluetooth Photo Print Adapter. T he adapter (par t# C1 2C8243 83) is available from yo ur local reseller or Epson (see page 69).
25 4 Select the photo you want to print from your Bluetooth device and send it to PictureMate: ● Windows ® : Send photos directly to PictureMate with your Bl uetooth file sharing program. See the documentation included with your computer’s Bluetooth adapter for details.
26 To use Pictu reMate with y our computer, you must first: ● Install the PictureMate software on your computer from the PictureMate CD as descri bed here. ● Connect PictureMate to your computer with a U SB cable. If you don ’t have a USB cable, you can buy one from your local computer dealer or from Epso n.
27 Note: If you have prob lems installing the softwar e, see page 64. Installing Softw are for W indows Before you start, make sure PictureMate is NOT connected to your compute r and does NOT have a memory card insert ed in it. 1 Press the P On button to turn on PictureMate.
28 After a moment, you see this screen: 6 Connect the USB cab le to any open USB por t on your computer. T hen conn ect the other end to the USB por t on the back of PictureMate. Y our Pi ctureMate software is installed. Note: If you see a screen like th is one, remove your memory card and click the X in the corner to close it.
29 8 When you see a message that installation is complete, click Exit . 9 Follow the on-screen instructions to reg ister PictureMate. 10 When you’re done, remove the CD.
30 After a few minutes, you see this screen: 7 Connect the USB cab le to any open USB por t on your Macintosh. Then connect the other end to the U SB por t on the back of PictureMate. If you’re using Mac OS X 1 0.5.x or later , skip to step 1 0. If you’re using Mac OS X 1 0.
31 Print From a Computer Follow these basic printing instructions for your computer: ● Windows (below) ● Macintosh (see page 37) Printing F rom a Wind ows Comput er Y ou can print photos from an imaging appl ication, the Windows Photo Gallery or Photo Viewer (page 31), or the Picture and Fax V iewer in W ind ows XP (page 34).
32 3 Click the Print icon at the top of the screen, then select Print from the drop-down menu that appears. 4 Make sure your printer is selected, then choose PictureMate Photo Paper as the P aper type setting. ( 4×6 i n is automatically selected as the Pap er size setting.
33 ● Y ou can change the Co lor Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t af fect your original). Auto Correction improves the quality of photos that are too dark or have a color cast. Scene Correction lets you choose the subject of your photo so that PictureMate can correct it appropriately .
34 Printing with the Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer 1 Locate the photo you want to print on your computer. 2 Right-click the photo, highlight Open With , and select Windows Pictu re and Fax Viewer . 3 Click the Print icon at the bottom of the screen.
35 6 When you see this screen, select your EPS ON PictureMate model and click Printing Preferences . Y ou see the printer settings screen: 7 Choose from the fo llowing settings: ● Select Borderless to print a photo without borders. Select Borders to print with a white border all around.
36 ● Y ou can change the Co lor Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t af fect your original). Auto Correction improves the quality of photos that are too dark or have a color cast. Scene Correction lets you choose the subject of your photo so that PictureMate can correct it appropriately .
37 During printing, this window appears on your computer screen showing the prog ress of your print job. Y ou can cancel printing if necessary and see your photo cartridge status. Printing F rom a Macintosh See the section below for your Mac OS operating system.
38 In Previe w , you see the se ttings show n below: 5 Open the Paper Size menu and place your cursor on the 4×6 i n option. Y ou see exten ded options: ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borderless) to print without any borders. ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borders) to print with white borders all arou nd.
39 ● Borderless prints are automatically expanded. If too much of your photo edges are cut of f , set the Expansion slider to Min . If you see a white edge on you r photo, select Mid or Max . 9 T o reduce or remove red-eye ef fects, select Extension Settings from the pop-up menu and choose Fix Red-Eye .
40 ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borderless) to print without any borders. ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borders) to print with white borders all arou nd. Note: iPhoto ® ex pands two sides of an image to the maximum print area, so y ou may see small borders in iPhoto prin ts.
41 ● Y ou can change the Co lor Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t af fect your original). Sepia changes the colors to brown for an old- fashioned look . Black & Whit e changes a co lor photo to black-and-white. ● Borderless prints are automatically expanded.
42 Y ou can inser t a memory card into PictureMate and copy the photos from the card to your computer . Y ou can also copy photos from your computer to the memory card. Make sure your PictureMate software is installed and PictureMate i s connected to your com puter as described in “Installin g Software and Connecti ng PictureMate” o n page 2 6.

44 Windows 2 000 Access your card just as you would access a drive on your computer . T o copy photos to and from your computer and card, drag and drop the photos to the card or folder.
45 When PictureMate needs a new Print Pack, you will see a message on the photo viewer screen. The Print Pack contains a new photo cartridge and photo paper.
46 Replacing the P hoto Cartridge Make sure you have a new Picture Mate Print P ack before you remove the old photo cartridge. Once you remove the cartridge, you must inst all the new one right away . Caution: Before y ou replace the cartridge, read the “Pho to Cartridge Safety Instructions” on page 81.
47 Warning: Keep photo cartridg es out of the reach of children and do no t drink the ink. If ink gets on your hand s, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If in k gets in your eyes, flush them thoroughly with water. If disco mfort or vision problems continue after flush ing, see a doctor immed iately.
48 Caution: If the cartridge is not inserted co rrectly, PictureMate will n ot be able to print. 8 Close the cartridge door all the way . Checking Photo Cartridge Status Y ou can check the status of your Print Pack at any time. 1 Press Menu . 2 Press l or r to highlight Maint enance , then press OK .
49 PictureMate’s han dle makes it easy to carry short distances. If yo u have the optional battery , you can use PictureMate just about anywhere, even if an electrical outlet is not available. Tip: You can order an optional Pic tureMate Carryi ng Case (part number PMBAG06) or rechargeable battery (part number C12C831082) from Epson.
50 Using the Optional Batte ry T o buy the optional ba ttery, check with your PictureMate retailer or go to www .MyPictureMate.com. See page 69 for more information on purchasing PictureMate s upplies and accessor ies. With a fully charged battery , you can print about 100 photos.
51 The power light flashes during charging when PictureMate is off . It takes about 2 hours t o fully charge the battery when PictureMate is off . It takes lon ger when you use PictureMate while it is charg ing. The power light tur ns of f wh en the battery is fully charged (if PictureMate is turned off).
52 Y ou can change the way PictureMate works by using the Setup menu. Y ou can set the following prefer ences: ● T urn the print preview sc reen off or on (on t he right) ● T urn on a screensaver .
53 3 Press l or r to highlight Display Settings , then press OK . 4 Press l or r to highlight Print Preview , th en press OK . 5 Press l or r to choose Off or On , then press OK . Turning the Screensaver On or Off Y ou can have PictureMate di splay a screen saver or slideshow of your photos after 3 minutes of inactivity.

57 Checking and Cleaning the Print Head If your pr int quality i s not as good as it used to be—if photos are too light, are missing colors, or have li nes running through them—Pic tureMate’s print head nozzles may need cleaning. Y ou can check the nozzles an d clean the print head if necessary.
58 ● If the pattern has g aps or missing lines, s elect No then press OK to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 60 seco nds. PictureMate makes some noise an d you see an Auto Cleaning message. If you don’t see any improvement after cleaning three times, see “Print Quality Prob lems” on page 64.
59 2 Press Menu . 3 Press l or r to highlight Maintenance , then press OK . 4 Press l or r to select Head Alignment , then press OK . Y ou see a confirmation screen: 5 Press Print .
60 Aligning the Print Hea d Using the Comput er Y ou can align the print head using your compu ter . 1 Make sure PictureMate is connected to yo ur computer and paper i s loaded. 2 Windows : Right-click the printer icon on your taskbar (in the lowe r right corner of your screen).
61 If you can’t find a square without li nes or streaks, choose the one that looks th e best. T hen click Realignment to print another alignment pattern and repeat this step. Note: The square you select becomes the mid dle square (#5) the next time you align the print head.
62 Caution: Never use a hard or abrasive brush, or alcohol or thinner for cleaning; they ca n damage the comp onents and case. Don’t get water on the c omponents and don’t spray lubricant s or oils insi de PictureMate. Printing and Oper ation Problems The On light and photo view er screen don’t turn on.
63 ● Make sure paper is not jammed and is loaded correctly , and make sure the handle is not resting on the paper . See page 9. PictureMate is on, but nothing prints.

66 Problems With Paper Feeding Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. The paper may be damp. Load new paper . Paper do esn’t feed correctly or jams. ● If paper doesn’t feed, remove it, separate the sheets slightly, and reload it between the edge guides.
67 Uninstalling Pictu reMate Software Y ou may need to uninstall and then reinstall your PictureMate software on your computer. T h is may be necessary when you upg rade your operating system, for example. However , you don’t need to uninstall this online User’s Guide .
