1 Welcome The EPSON ® Expression ® 1640XL is a 42-bit color, large-fo rmat p rofess ional s canner design ed to meet th e need s of gra phic art s profes siona ls, and business graphics users. It’s ideally suited for sm all LAN (Local Area Network) users who want to share a s canner with in their wo rkgroup.
2 About Your Software The EPSON Expression 1640XL scanner includes these leading-edg e applications for professi onal-quality scans : EPSON TWAIN Pro Exclusive professional-quality scanne r driver with powerful features for controlling e very aspect of your scan.
3 Getting More Information There are several ways to learn more about your EPSON Expression 1640XL. In addition to the prin ted ma terials, h elp util ities an d electronic m anual s are a vailabl e on your computer and C D-ROMs.
4 ■ On-Screen Help Most of the applicatio ns that co me with your scan ner include on-screen he lp. For EPSON TWAIN Pro, just click the button or select Help from the menu. ■ Electronic Doc uments Several o f the applicati ons that came with your scan ner include electro nic manuals in the Ado be Acroba t ® PDF format.
5 Reading Your Reference Guide Your el ectroni c EPSON Expression 1640XL Online Reference Gui de is on your EPSON Expression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM. You can view it from the CD-ROM or copy it to your hard drive and vie w it from there. You must have a web browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, versions 3.

7 Viewing Your Other Electronic Manuals To view your electronic m anual for Presto! PageManager for EPSON, ScanSoft TextBridge P ro, or any other PDF manuals, you’l l use Adobe Acrobat Reade r. If Acrobat Rea der is not alre ady insta lled on your comp uter, you can instal l it with th e other scanner software.

9 Registering Please take a mi nute to com plete the electron ic registrat ion form. If yo u are instal ling software under Windo ws, the electro nic registration form wil l display at the end of the software installation p rocess (see “Chapter 2, Setting Up Your Scanner”).

11 Setting Up Your Scanner Setting up your scanne r is easy. For most installa tions, just foll ow the steps in this book i n the order li sted be low. 1. Unpack and choose a place for your scanner. 2. Unlock the scanner. 3. Connect the scanner to your computer .
12 Unpacking Yo ur Scanner Remove the scanne r from the box, th en remove the packin g material from your scanner. Save the packaging in case you need it later.
13 Choosing a Good Place f or Your Scanner Here are s ome points to consi der: ■ Place the scanner on a fl at, stable surface. If the scanner is til ted, it can’t operate prop erly . ■ Make sure to place the scanner where you can easily unplug the power co rd, and where your cable can reach your computer.

15 Unlocking th e Scanner Before connecting the scanner to a power source , you must release the transp ortatio n lock, locat ed on the side of th e scanne r.
16 Attaching the Document Guide Strip The documen t guide stri p makes it eas y to align d ocuments o n the sca nner’s document table. To att ach the document guide strip to the scanne r: 1.
17 Testing Your Scanner’s Operation To make sure your scanner is working properly, it’s a good ide a to turn it on before you connect it to your computer. The scanner’s vol tage cannot be changed. If the label on the back of the scanner does not display the corr ect voltage for your area, cont act yo ur dealer.
18 Connecting the Scann er to Your Co mputer You can connect the scanner to your comp uter in any of these ways: ■ USB If you have a Power Ma cintosh ® with built-in USB support or your computer is running Windows 2000 or Windows 98 (factory i nstalled), you can connect the Expression 1640XL with the USB cable that came with the scanner.
19 Connecting to a USB Interface With the USB interfa ce, you can connec t or re move your s canne r without ha ving to shut down or restart your computer. Don’t disconn ect or connect the USB cable when the Expressi on 1640XL is scanning. Windows 200 0 or Windows 98 must be preinstalled on yo ur computer, no t upgraded.
20 Connecting to a SCSI Interface Before you connect the scanner, you must have an ASPI-com pliant SCSI 2 interface board installed i n your computer (Adapte c SCSI 2 interface bo ards are recommended). So me computers com e with a SCSI 2 board preinstall ed; check your computer docume ntation .
21 Do not conn ect the scanner to the computer whi le it i s turn ed on, or the scanner coul d be damaged. 2. Squeeze the l ock releases on the lock connector en d of your SCSI c able, and then pl ug the cable into e ither SCSI connector on the back of the scanner.
22 Connecting to an IE EE 1394 FireWire Interface If you have purcha sed the optional IEEE 1394 FireWire scanner in terface card, you can connect the scanner to y our Power Macintosh or PC using an IEEE 1394 FireWire interface.
23 Installing the Window s Software Before you begi n installing software, make sure yo u recalibrate your monitor to factory specificat ions. Then follow the instructio ns for your operating system: ■ If you’re running Windows 2000, conti nue with the next secti on, “Installing the Windows 200 0 Software.
24 You may be asked to insert your Windows C D-ROM during this proced ure. Make sure you have your Windows CD-ROM available, or know where to find the Windows source file s on your hard drive. If you need help locating yo ur source files, contact your computer m anufacturer.
25 4. Select Specify a locat ion , if necessary, and click N ext . 5. Browse to EPSON Win2000 on your CD-ROM drive. (The example to the right u ses “F ” as the CD-ROM drive lett er. Your CD-ROM drive le tter may be different.) Click OK to close the Browse window, and then click Next .

Make sure EPSON Expression1640XL is select ed, and the n click t he Properties button.
29 Selecting the Expression 1640XL as You r Default Scanner (Windows 2000) If you have more than o ne scanner connect ed to your comput er, you can set up the Expression 1640XL as the default scanner. 1. Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon in your Windows Contro l Pane l to o pen th e Sca nners and Cameras Pro perties window.
30 Installing the Windo ws 98 Software Before you begin, make sure the Expressio n 1640XL is connected to your computer. Also, make s ure you’ve recalibrate d your monitor to facto ry specifications. This procedure automatically installs your EPSON TWAIN Pro driver and any software you need for a USB connection.
31 4. Select Specify a locat ion , if necessary, and click Brows e . 5. Browse to EPSON Win98 on your CD-ROM drive. (The example t o the ri ght uses “E” a s the C D-ROM drive letter. Your CD-ROM drive letter may be d ifferent.) Cli ck OK to close th e Browse wi ndow, and th en click Ne xt .

36 1. Turn on your scanner first; then turn on your computer. When you se e the window o n the rig ht, click Nex t . 2. Insert your Expression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM in your drive. Then click Other Locations . 3. Browse to the follo wing location on yo ur CD-ROM drive: EPSONWin95 .
37 4. When you see this window, click Finish . Continue wit h the ins tructions i n the next sectio n to ins tall EPSO N TWAIN Pro and other software on your Expression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM.
38 2. Click Add Software . You see the software selection window. A check mark appe ars beside a pplicatio ns selected for installation. If you want to desele ct either Presto! PageManage r or Acrobat Reader, click t he applica tion to cle ar the check m ark.
39 5. When you see th e EPSON Scr een Ca libratio n Utility, m ove the sl ider right or left until the stripes match as closely as possible. Then click OK . 6. Follow th e instructio ns on the s creen to ins tall Presto! PageManager, Acrobat Reader, and complete the 1640XL electronic registratio n form.
40 Installing the Windo ws NT 4.0 Software This procedure installs EPSON TWAIN Pro, Presto! PageManager, and Acrobat Reader. Before you begin, make sure the scanner is attache d to your computer, and that you’ve rec alibrated your screen to factory specifications.
41 4. Click Add Software . You see the software selection window. A check mark appe ars beside a pplicatio ns selected for installation. If you want to desele ct either Presto! Pa geMana ger or A crobat R eader, cli ck the applicat ion to clear the check mark.
42 7. When you see th e EPSON Scr een Ca libratio n Utility, m ove the sl ider right or left until the stripes match as closely as possible. Then click OK . 8. Follow th e instructio ns on the s creen to ins tall Presto! PageManager for EPSON and Acrobat Reader, and complet e the 1640XL electronic registration form.
43 Installing Additional Windows Software Follow th e instructions in this section to i nstall Ado be Photos hop LE, MonacoEZcolor, and ScanSo ft TextBridge P ro. Installing Adobe P hotoshop LE To find out how to upgrade to t he full version of Adobe Photoshop, see the Acrobat file titl ed Upgrade.
44 Installing ScanSoft TextBridge Pro 1. If necessary, insert the EPSON E xpression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM in your drive. 2. If the Software Setup window doesn’t a ppear, double -click the My Computer icon on your Window s desk top, the n double-click th e Epson CD-ROM icon.
45 Installing the Macintosh Software Although you can connect the scanner either before o r after installing the scanner software, you’ll see a message that your scanner driver needs to be installed i f you connect i t before insta lling. Clo se the m essage a nd continue with the ins tallation instructions in the n ext section.
46 5. Click Inst all , and then follow the ins truc tions o n the screen to install EPSON TWAIN Pro and EPSON S canner Mo nitor . 6. When installation finishes, click Restart .
47 Installing Other Software on Your Scanning To ols CD-ROM Follow these steps to finish installing the software on your Expression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM: 1. Double-click the Presto! Pag eManager folder. (If necessary, double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon to open the CD-ROM window.
48 Installing Adobe P hotoshop LE To find out how to upgrade to t he full version of Adobe Photoshop, see the Acrobat file titl ed Upgrade.pdf on the Adobe Pho toshop LE CD-ROM (you must have Acrobat Rea der installe d to vi ew this file). 1. Insert the Adobe Photoshop LE CD-ROM in your drive .
49 Selecting the Expression 1640XL as Your Default Scanner To verify that the scanner is prop erly connecte d or if you have more than one EPSO N scanner connected to your com puter, you can choose which scanner you want to use. Follow these steps to choose the Expression 1640XL as your default scanner: 1.

51 How To Scan This section gives you an overview of the scanning process a nd some tips for gett ing the best scan . It also includes step-by-step scanning instructio ns. Scanning Tips Getting the best scan possibl e depen ds on several factors, in cluding the qual ity of your origina l and the resoluti on you s elect.
52 Keep the following in mi nd when you choose a resoluti on: ■ The higher th e resolutio n you select, the large r the resultin g image fi le will be. For example, an 8.5 × 11-inch origi nal scanned at 300 dpi can produce a 24MB file. The same original scanned at 72 dpi creates only a 1.
53 Batch Scanning You can use batch scanning to save time. Batch scanning allo ws you to scan several images at once, or the same im age with several different setti ngs. 55 Step-by-Step Scanning In structions This section contains step-by-step instructions for scanning an image. Although the Window s inte rfac e is show n, Maci ntosh s teps ar e the same. Placing Your Original Docu ment 1. Raise the scanner cover and place your document face down on the do cument table.
56 Scanning w ith EPSON TWAIN Pro 1. Start your host application (for example, Ado be Photoshop LE). 2. Select your scanner driver. (Unle ss you change your source, you only need t o do this step once.
57 5. Click the Previ ew button. You see a preview o f your scan in the window that opens. 6. Click the Auto Locate button to a utomatica lly define the scan area around the edge s of you r image.
58 Using the ] Start Button You can load a docum ent in the sc anner, press the ] Start button, and watch whil e Presto! PageManager starts and then scans, copies, faxes, or e-mails your document.

64 Using the Document Guide Most scanners scan at a slight angle due to the moveme nt of the carriage. If you find that yo ur sca nned ima ges are bei ng scan ned at an angl e, use th e docume nt guide to adjust the angle of scanning.

68 Calculating the Ad justment Angle If you need t o adjust the document guide ang le, you first need t o determine whi ch way to adjust it and by how much. Fo r example, in the example shown above: The adjusting angle = (scale A - scal e B) / 4 For exa mple: If scale A starts at line 0, then 0 × 0.
69 Scanning You r Aligned Documen t Be sure to remove the protecti ve fil m from bot h the gri d document guide and clear document guide before usi ng them. 1. Lay the clear document guide on the scanner document table wit h the document gu ide holes over th e sca nner sc rew hole s.
70 5. Remove the grid do cument guide. 6. Turn the clear document guid e over and lay it on the documen t table with the document guide h oles over the sca nner sc rew hole s. Make sure the la rger document guide h ole is on the right and yo ur document faces down.
71 Network Scanning You can u se EP SON Scan Ser ver an d EPSON TWAIN Pro Network, two applications on your E PSON Expression 1640XL Scanning Tools CD-ROM, to share yo ur scanner with o ther users in a small workgroup. Your netwo rk must have a scanner serve r (the Windows computer co nnected to the sc anner ) and one o r more client comp uters.

81 Finishing the Scanner Server Installation on Windows 98 Before your computer can share its scanner, you must install EPSON Scan Server. At the same tim e, you can install other software that came with yo ur scanner.
82 You don’t need to install EPSON TWAIN Pro Network to use the scanner connected to your computer— use EPSON TWAIN Pro instead. EPSON TWAIN Pro is automatically install ed when you install the sca nner server soft ware. Only install EPSON TWAIN Pro Network if you want to use an Expression 1640XL att ached to another computer .
83 Setting Up the Default Scanner on Windows 98 If you have more than o ne scanner connect ed to your comput er, you can set up the Expression 1640XL as the default scanner. 1. Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon in your Windows Contro l Pane l to o pen th e Sca nners and Cameras Pro perties window.

88 Use EPSON TWAIN Pro to scan from the Expression 1640XL connected to your compu ter. Only install EPSON TWAIN Pro Network if you want to use an Expres sion 1640XL att ached to another computer. 2. If you’re no t installing EPSON TWAIN Pro, go to step 5.
89 4. When you see th e EPSON Scr een Ca libratio n Utility, m ove the sl ider right or left until the stripes ma tch as clos ely as po ssible. Then click OK . The EPSON Screen Calibration Utility cal ibrates the pr eview image you see in your EPSON TWAIN Pro dri ver to mat ch your moni tor sett ings.
90 If you want to share a differ ent network scanner wit h client computers, you can acces s the EPSON Scan Server window at any time by double-c licking the EPSON Scan Server ic on in the Windows Cont rol Panel. Then select t he scanner y ou want in the Scanner Selecti on list.
91 Changing the Scan Server Start Up Mode When you installed the software, you set up the Scan Server to start in either Dialo g Box mode o r Icon mode.
92 Setting Up Client Computers To set up a client com puter, you’ll need to know the I P address or host name of the scanner server. A lso, make sure the TC P/IP protocol is inst alled (see Append ix B, “Installing the TCP/I P Protocol,” for instructions).
