1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing EMTEC 802.1 1g W ireless LAN USB Adapter . This adapter complies with IEEE 802.1 1g standard, which supports up to 54 Mbps high-speed wireless network connections. It can also work with IEEE 802.1 1b devices. W hen the adapter conne cts to 1 1b devices, the link speed will be up to 1 1Mbps.

2 Installation Procedure Before you proceed with the installation, please notice following descriptions. Note 1: The following installation was operated unde r Windows V ista. (Procedures are similar for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP .) Note 2: If you have installed the Wireless Adapter driver & utility before, please uninstall the old version first.

F . Click “Finish” to complete the software installation. G. Please plug the USB adapter into the USB port of the computer . H. The system will auto detect the USB adapter and complete the drivers installation fo r the adapter automatically . I. Y ou are now able to use the USB adapter .
B. The utility of the adapter is displayed. Click “Available Network” and double-click on the wireless access point you want to connect to. C. Input the security setting if the Access Point has enabled the security and click “OK” to start network connection.

C. Click the access point you want to use if it’s shown, then click ‘Connect’. D. If it’s an unnamed access point (i.e. the SSI D of this wireless a ccess point is hidden), you’ll b e prompted input it ’ s name, and the name must be identical to the SSID setting of t he wire less access point you’re connecting to.
E. If the access point is protected by e ncryption m ethod, you h ave to input its se curity or p assphrase here. It must match the encryption setting on the access point. Click ‘Connect’. F . If you can see this image, the connection b etween your computer and wireless access point is successfully established.
3 Setup Wizard The u tility supports a quick setup wizard for you to connect to the wireless network simply . Please follow the step below to run the setup wizard.
C. The site survey results will show up. Please select the one you’d like to connect to and click the “Next” button. D. In t he Wireless network properties dialog, please fill in the security settings for this wireless network you’d like to connect to and click “OK”.
E. Please specify the IP settings for this wireless network o r se lect to obtain the I P Address from the wireless access point directly . It is recommended to select “Ob tain an IP address automa tically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”.
F . Now you can connect to the wireless network successfully . 13.
4 Configuration Utility The Con figuration Utility is a po wer ful application that helps you configure the Wireless LAN USB Adapter and monitor the link status and the statistics during the communication process. The Configuration Utility appears as an icon on t he system tray and desktop of Windows.
3.1 Utility O v e rview There are several parts in the utility screen. Please refer to the following table for the description. Parameter Description Refresh – Refresh adapter list in the “B“ block. SetWizard – Open the setup wizard fo r quick start the wireless connection.
Parameter Description It is the status b ar that d isplays the current status of the utility . T o close it, please disable the “Status Bar“ in the “View“ item. There are several tabs in the block for you to setup the function of the adapter .
3.2 A va ilable Network W he n you open the Configuration Utility , the s ystem will scan all the channels to f ind all the access points/stations within the accessible range of your adapter and automatically connect to the wireless network with the highest signal st rength.
3.3 General T o check the connection status of the adapter , select “General“. This screen shows the information of Link Speed, Network T ype, Encr yption Method, SSID, Signal Strength, Link Quality a nd Network Address of the adapter . Parameter Description Status It will show the connection status of the adapter .
Parameter Description Signal Strength It indicates the wireless signal strength. Link Quality It indicates the wireless link quality . Network Address It shows the MAC, IP address and other inf ormation of the adapter . Renew IP Click th is button to renew the network address settings of t he adapter .
3.4 Profile The “Profiles List” is for you to manage the networks you connect to f requently . Y ou are able to Add/Remove/Edit/Duplicate/Set Default to manage a profile. Parameter Description Available Profile(s) This list shows the preferred networks for the wireless connection.
3 . 4 . 1 C o n f i g u r e t h e P r o f i l e Parameter Description This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used. There are two kinds of network type described as follows. Infrastructure – This operation mode requires the presence of an 802.
Parameter Description Channel This se tting is onl y available for Ad Hoc mode. Se lect the number of the rad io channel used for the networking. The channel setting should be the same with the network you are connecting to. Network Authentication This setting h as to be consistent with the wireless net works t hat the adapter intends to connect.
WP A2 802.1X – Like W P A, WP A2 supports IE EE 802.1 x/EAP authentication or PSK technology . It also includes a new advanced e ncryption mechanism using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). A ES is required to the corporate user or government use rs.
Parameter Description Network Key The keys a re used t o encrypt data transmitted in the wireless network. Fill the text box by following the rules below . 64-bit – Input 10-digit Hex values as the encr yption keys. For example: “0123456aef“. 128-bit – Input 26-digit Hex values as the encryption keys.
3.5 Advanced The “Advanced” option enables you to configure more advanced settings, for example: Power Save, T urbo Mode, Wireless Mode and etc. Parameter Description Power Save None – The adapter will always set in active mode.
Parameter Description W ir eless Mode 802.1 1 b – This adapter can be compatible with both 802.1 1g and 802.1 1b wire less stations. If there a re only 802.1 1b wireless stations in the network, you can set the adapter to this mode. 802.1 1 g/b – If you have a mix of 802.
Parameter Description Set Defaults Let the setting values return to default. Apply Confirm the settings in the “Advanced“. 27.
3.6 Status This screen shows the information of manufacturer , driver version, settings of the wireless network the adapter is connecting to, linking time and link status. If you don’t ensure the status of the adapter and the network you are connecting, please go to the screen for more details.
3.7 Statistics Y ou can get the real time information about the p acket transmission and receiving status du ring wireless communication f rom the screen.
3.8 Wi-Fi Protected Setup W i- Fi Protected Setup (W PS) is the latest wireless network technology which m akes wireless network setup become very simple. If you have W PS-enabled wireless access point, and you want to establish a secure connection to it, you don’t have to configure the wire less access point and setup data encryption.
3.9 Software AP This adapte r can run as a wireless AP . Please pull down the “Mode” menu and select “Access Po int”. The relative configurations of the AP including channel, SSID, W EP encryption and so on are described as follows.
Parameter Description SSID The SSID (up to 32 printable ASCII characters) is the unique name identified in a W LAN. The ID prevents the unintentional merging of two co-located W LANs . The default SSID of the AP is Fu ll Computer Name + “ _AP“. W ir eless adapters connect to the AP should set up the same SSID as the AP .
3 . 8 . 2 A P A d v a n c e d Parameter Description Beacon Interval Beacon Interval that specifies the duration between beacon packets (milliseconds). The range for the beacon pe riod is between 20-1000 milliseconds with a typical value of 100. DTIM Period Determines the inter val the Access Point will send its broadcast traffic.

5 T roubleshooting This chapter provides solutions to problems usually encountered during the installation and operation of the adapter . 1.
