8 II. CREATING A P OWERLINE NE TWORK A minimum of two Powerline device s are required to e s tab lish a Po werline network. For be s t performance, plug Po werline adapters directly into st an dard wall sock ets. A v oid using multi -socke t ad apters .
9 4. P re ss th e “ Gr oup” button but ton on each P owerline adapter f or less than 3 seconds, within 2 minutes o f each other . The a dapter s will automatically group to gether and gener ate an encrypte d network. Y ou can now setup the HP- 5101W n’ s W i -F i using either II -2.
10 II-2 . iQ Setup 1. Use a W i-F i device (e.g. computer , tablet, smartphone) to sear ch for a W i -F i network with the SSID “Edimax.Se tup” and connect to it. 2. Open a w eb brow ser and if you do not automatically arriv e at the “ Get Start e d” screen shown below , enter the URL http://e dimax.
11 3. Select “Obt ain an IP addre ss automatically ” and then click “NEXT ” . Adv anced users who need to specify an IP addres s for the HP - 51 01W n, select “U se the following IP address” .
12 5. Please en ter a “MAIN ESSID” – this is a name to identify the HP- 5101W n’ s Wi - F i network, which you wi ll connect to fr om y our wirele ss device.
13 7. Please w ait while the HP-5101W n re starts. 8. When the HP - 5101W n has re starte d, the f ollowing “Congr atulations” scree n wi ll be display e d, indicating that wir eless setup is complet e. Y our HP - 5101W n’ s W i -F i should now be ac tive and r eady f or use.

15 II -3. WPS Setup If your wir eless router/ access point supports WPS (W i -F i Pr ot ecte d S etup) then you c an use this method to set up your HP - 5101W n’ s W i -F i network. WPS is an alternative to II -2. iQ Setup. The HP - 5101W n’ s W i - F i settings (including SSID) wi ll be the same as your e xisting rout er/ access poin t .
16 II-4 . Connecting to your HP -5101W n The following st e ps 9-11 are an ex amp le of how to c onnect to a W i -F i network using W indows V ist a. If you are usin g a different version of W indows, the pr oce ss may v ar y slightly – please connect t o a W i -F i network i n the usual manner for oper ating s y s tem.

24 III -3 . Basic Set ting Th e “Basic Set ting ” page enable s y ou to configur e the ESSID , channel number and other basic par am et er s of the wirele ss extender . Mode The e xtender ’ s mode cannot be configur e d – the def aul t mode is “ Acc e ss P oint ” .

26 III-3-1 . Security The wirele ss ext ender pro vides a v a riety o f wirele ss security options (data encryption) which can be con figure d on this page. It is important to c onfigure security to pr ev ent intruder s fr om accessing y our local network and causing damage to c omputer s and server s.
27 III-3-1-1 . Disable Select “ Disable ” to disable wir ele ss encryption for the network. This is not r ecommended - an y one within range c an connect to the device ’ s SSID. Enable 802.1x Authentication Check this bo x to enable 802.1x user authentica tion.
28 III-3-1-2 . WEP W ire d Equivalent Priv acy (WEP) is a basic encryption type. WP A encr yption is recommende d – thoug h some legacy wireless devic es ma y only support WEP . WEP supports data r ate s up to a maximum 54Mbps. K ey Leng th Select “ 64 -bit ” or “ 128-bit ” k ey leng th .

32 III -4 . WPS Setting WPS (W i-F i Prot ecte d Setup) is a simple wa y to e st ablish connections between WPS comp atibl e device s. WPS devices f eatur e a WPS function whi ch can be activ ate d by pushi ng a WPS button on the device or from within the device’ s fir m war e/configur ation i n terf ace.

47 III -7-1. Diagnosis U sing the diagn osis tool, y ou can ping a specific IP addr e ss and automatically r eboot the device if there is no re sp onse. W at chdog and r eboot device Select “ Enable ” or “ Disable ” for the automa tic r eboot function.
48 III -7-2. F irmware U pgr ade The wirele ss e xtender ’ s firmw ar e upgr ade f eatur e allows y ou to upgr ade the sy st em firmw ar e to a mor e r ecent ver sion. Y ou can download the late st firmw ar e fr om the Edimax w ebsite. Do not switch off or disconnect the acce ss point during a firmware upgr ade, as this could damage the device.
49 III -7-3. R eboot If the wirele ss e xtender malfunctions or is not r esponding, then it is r ecommende d that you r e set the device. This f ea ture is use ful if the location of the acce ss point is not con venient t o phy sically use the hardw ar e re s et but ton.
50 IV. POWERLINE U TILITY SOFTW ARE The included CD-ROM con tains P ow erline uti lity softw ar e, which enables y ou to manage and configur e your P owerline netw ork in more d et ai l. The uti lity enables y ou to ma nage all connect e d P owerline adapt ers.
