Intr oducti on 15 1 Introduction This section de scribes the sw itch user -configurable f eatures. F or a li st of all featur es, see t he softwar e version r elease notes. Note: Before procee ding, r ead the r elease notes for this pr oduct . Y o u can downl oad the rele ase note s from the Del l Suppo rt websit e, support.
16 Introduct ion System Features sFlow sFlow is the standard for m onitoring high-speed swit ched and routed netw orks. sFlow technology is built into network equipme nt and gives complete v isib ility into net work acti vity , enabling ef fectiv e management and control of network resources.
Intr oducti on 17 Software Download Softwar e download en ables storage of backup firmwar e images. F or information ab out downloading the software, see "Software Download an d Reboot .
18 Introduct ion Port Aggregat or The P ort Aggregator feat ur e minimi zes the administ ration required for ma naging the P owerConnect M6220/M 6348/M8024.
Intr oducti on 19 Dynamic ARP Inspection Dynamic ARP Insp ection (D AI) is a security feature that r ejects invalid and mal icious ARP packets. The featur e prevents a class of man-in-t he-middle attacks, whe re an unfriendly station intercepts traffic for other stations by poisoning the ARP caches of it s unsuspecting neighbors.
20 Introduct ion Port-Bas ed Features Jumb o Frames Support Jumbo frames e nable transport ing identical data in fewer frames to ensure less overhea d, lower processi ng time, and f ewer interrup ts. Auto-MDI/MDIX Support Y o ur sw itch sup ports auto-dete ction be tw een crossed and straight-throu gh cables.
Intr oducti on 21 Alter nate Stor e and Forwa rd (ASF) The Alternate Store and F orward (ASF) featur e reduces latency for lar ge packets. When ASF is enabled, the memory management unit (MMU) can forwar d a packet to the egr e ss port before it has been entirely re ceived on t he Cell Buffer P ool (CBP) memory .
22 Introduct ion GVRP Support GARP VLAN Registration P rotocol (GVRP) provides IEEE 802.1Q-comp liant VLAN pruning and dynamic VLAN cr eation on 802.1Q trunk ports . When GVRP is enabled, the switch re gisters and propagates VLA N membership on all po rts that are part of the active spanning tree protocol top ology .
Intr oducti on 23 Spanning T ree Prot ocol Features Spanning T ree n ow supports IEEE8 02.1Q-2005 This version of the IEEE Multiple Spanning T r ee Protocol corr ects problems associated with the previous version, provides for faster transition-to-forw arding, a nd incorporates new fe atures for a po rt (rest ricted role and re stricted TCN).
24 Introduct ion Spann ing T r ee Root Gu ard Spanning T ree Root Gua rd is used to prevent the root of a Sp anning T re e instance from changing unexpe ctedly . The priorit y of a Bridge ID can be se t to zero but another Bridge ID with a lower mac addr ess could also s et its priori ty to zero and tak e over root.
Intr oducti on 25 Routing Fe atures VLAN Routing The P owerConnect M 6220/M8024/ M6348 softwar e supp orts VLAN routing. Y ou can also configure the softwar e to allow traffic on a VL AN to be tr eated as if the VLAN wer e a router port.
26 Introduct ion IP Interface Configuration IP interface config uration includes the abili ty to configure the bandwidth, Destination Unr eachable messages, and I CMP Redirect messa ges. IP Helper P rovides the ability to relay various protocols to servers on a different subnet.
Intr oducti on 27 MAC Multicast Support Multic ast serv ice is a limite d broadca st serv ice tha t allow s one-to-m any a nd many-t o-many con nections . In Layer 2 multicast services, a single frame addressed to a specific multicast address is received, and copies of the frame to b e transmitted on each relevant port are cr eated.
28 Introduct ion IPv6 Ro uting Fe atures IPv6 6 to 4 Auto T unnels Automatica lly formed IPv4 6 to 4 tunnels for carry ing IPv6 traffic. The automatic tunnel IPv4 destination addr ess i s derived from the 6 to 4 IPv6 address of the tunnel nexthop.
Intr oducti on 29 OSPFv3 The OSPFv3 Configuration page has been updated with the following changes: • AutoCost Reference Bandwidth field • Defau lt P assiv e Setting field • Max imum P aths incr.
30 Introduct ion Multicast Fe atures IPv4 Mul ticast Fea tures Updated IPv4 Multicast Routing Support The Multicast packa ge code has been extensively re-engineered and furnished with the following: .
Intr oducti on 31 IPv6 Mul ticast Fea tures Protocol Independent Multicast IPv6 Su pport PIM-DM and PIM-SM support I Pv6 routes . MLD/MLDv2 (RFC2710/RFC3810) MLD is used by IPv6 systems (listeners and routers) to report their IP multica st addresses memberships to any neig hborin g multic ast rout ers.
32 Introduct ion Passw ord Manag ement Sec urity P asswor d management provi des increase d network securit y and improved passwo rd control. P asswor ds for SSH, T elnet, HTTP , HTTPS, and SNMP access are as signed s ecurity features. F or more information about password ma nagement, see "P assword Management.
