6 Setting Up Y our XPS Desktop Lifting Y our Computer T o ensure safety and to a void any damage to your computer , lift it by holding the lift points in the front and back of your computer .
7 Setting Up Y our XPS Desktop Before Setting Up Y our Computer When positioning your computer , ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer . Restricting airflow around your computer may cause it to overheat.
8 Setting Up Y our XPS Desktop Connect the Display If you purchased the optional discrete graphics card, connect the display using the connector on the discrete graphics card. Otherwise, connect the display using either the integrated VGA or HDMI connector .

10 Setting Up Y our XPS Desktop Connect the Keyboard and Mouse Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the USB connectors on the back panel of your computer .
11 Setting Up Y our XPS Desktop Connect the Network Cable (Optional) A network connection is not required to complete your computer setup, but if you have an existing network or Internet connection that uses a cable connection (such as a broadband device or Ethernet jack), you can connect it now.

32 Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer . Check your wireless router to ensure it is • powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub).
33 Solving Problems Power Problems If the power light is off — The computer is in hibernate mode, turned off, or is not receiving power . Press the power button. The computer • resumes normal operation if it is off or in hibernate mode. Reseat the power cable into the power • connector on the computer and the electrical outlet.
34 Solving Problems If the power light is blinking amber — The computer has detected an error during POST . There might be a problem with the system board or the power supply.

41 Using Support T ools No boot device available — No bootable partition on hard drive, the hard drive cable is loose, or no bootable device exists. If the hard drive is your boot device, ensur e • that the cables are connected and that the drive is installed properly and partitioned as a boot device.
42 Using Support T ools Hardware T roubleshooter If a device is either not detected during the operating system setup or is detected but incorrectly configured, you can use the Hardware T roubleshooter to resolve the incompatibility. T o start the Hardware T roubleshooter: Click 1.
43 Using Support T ools Starting Dell Diagnostics When you run Dell diagnostics, the computer invokes the Pre‑boot System Assessment (PSA). The PSA includes a series of diagnostic tests for devices such as the system board, keyboard, display , memory, har d drive, and so on.

45 Y ou can restore the operating system on your computer using any of the following options: CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image Restore or the Operating System disc to restore your operating system permanently deletes all data files on your computer .
46 Restoring Y our Operating System System Restore The Microsoft Windows operating systems provide a System Restore option which allows you to return your computer to an earlier operating state (without affecting data files) if changes to the hardware, software, or other system settings have left the computer in an undesirable operating state.
47 Restoring Y our Operating System Undoing the Last System Restore NOTE: Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files and exit any open programs. Do not alter , open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.
