19 2 General Information Document Orien tation This manual describes the operation o f the Agilent Model N3300A, N3301A, N3302A, N330 3A N3304A, N3305A and N3306A DC Electro nic Loads. Unl ess otherwise no ted, all un its will be re ferred to by the descrip tion "elect ronic load" t hroughou t this manual.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 20 Safety Consideratio ns This ele ctronic load is a Safety Class 1 i nstrument, w hich m eans it has a p rotectiv e earth term inal. That term inal must be conne cted to earth g round throug h power source equipped with a g round recep tacle.
Genera l Infor mation - 2 21 The N3301A is a DC Elec tronic Lo ad Mainfram e that is fun ctionally identical to the N3300A, but is a half- rack width with only two slo ts for load m odules. The mainfram e can dis sipate up to 300 watts pe r slot, to a t otal of 600 watts for a fully lo aded main frame.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 22 Operating Mo des The three m odes of op eration a re: ♦ Constant cu rrent (CC). ♦ Constant vo ltage (CV). ♦ Constant resis tance (CR). When program med to a m ode, a module remains i n that mode un til the m ode is chang ed or until a f ault condition, su ch as an overpow er or over temperat ure, occurs.
Genera l Infor mation - 2 23 Triggered Current Level A current level can b e preset ( stored in the elect ronic load ) allowing the inpu t to be updated w hen a trig ger is receiv ed instead o f imm ediately as desc ribed abov e.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 24 Figure 2-2. Constant Resistance Mode Immediate Resistance Level The resi stance lev el can be set at the f ront panel o r via the GPI B ( RES comm and). If the CR mode is a ctive, the new sett ing imm ediately changes the in put at a rate dete rmined by the voltag e or curren t slew s etting (see descrip tion below).
Genera l Infor mation - 2 25 ( VOLT:RANG command). When y ou program a voltag e value, the e lectronic l oad automati cally sel ects the range th at correspo nds to the v alue that y ou program . If the v alue falls in a region where ranges ov erlap, th e electroni c load sele cts the Low r ange.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 26 Transient Operati on Transient op eration en ables the m odule to peri odically swit ch between two load level s, as might be required for testing powe r supplies.
Genera l Infor mation - 2 27 List Operation List mode l ets you generat e complex sequences of input chang es with rapid, pr ecise tim ing, which m ay be synchroniz ed with in ternal or external sig nals. This i s useful when running tes t sequences w ith a m inimum amount of pr ogramm ing overhead.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 28 If the ac l ine is se lected via the G PIB as the trigg er source, trigg ers will be gene rated once f or each cy cle of ac input power. An ac line frequen cy of 60 Hz produc es a trig ger period of 16.6 7 ms; 50 Hz lin e frequency produces a t rigger per iod of 20 ms.
Genera l Infor mation - 2 29 Therefore, bo th minim um transition time and s lew rate m ust be conside red when dete rmining the actual transiti on time. This is shown in Fig ure 2- 8, which shows the m inimum transition t ime for a giv en slew rate as a horizontal line, and a t about a 13.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 30 Input C ontrol Short On/O ff A module can s imulate a short circu it at its input by turning the load on wi th full- scale current. The short c ircuit can be tog gled on/off at the front pane l using the SHORT comm and in the Fu nc m enu, or via the GPI B ( INPUT:SHO RT ON|OFF comm and).
Genera l Infor mation - 2 31 Caution To protec t the elec tronic load f rom possib le damag e, the input v oltage m ust not exce ed the maxim um input voltag e rating specified in the m odule-specific p ages suppli ed with each module. Nev er apply the ac line voltag e to a m odule's input conne ctors.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 32 remain se t until th ey are rese t. If the OT condition still ex ists when th e reset is executed, the module' s input wil l remain of f. You must wa it until the m odule coo ls down before y ou can rese t the OT circu it.
Genera l Infor mation - 2 33 Saving and Recalling Se ttings The elec tronic load has inter nal regis ters in whi ch setting s (mode, cu rrent, vo ltage, resi stance, sl ew, transien t level, e tc.) for e ach module can b e saved. By saving setting s and re calling them later y ou can save programm ing tim e.
2 - Gen eral Inform ation 34 20A Input (prog rammed v ia GPIB or front pan el) ± 1V (2 V peak- peak) 1 k Hz external prog ramm ing sign al The exter nal program m ing signal (+ 1 and - 1 volt) c orresponds to + 6 and - 6 amps at th e input (1 v olt exter nal programm ing input = 1 /10 full scal e).
Genera l Infor mation - 2 35 As shipped from the fac tory, front pane l measur ements fo r input v oltage and cu rrent are calculated from a total of 1000 reading s taken at a 10 micro second sam pling rat e. There are n o trigg er controls for front p anel measurem ents.
37 3 Inst allation Inspection Damage When you rece ive y our electronic load, inspec t it for any obvious dam age that m ay have occurr ed during shipment. I f there is dam age, noti fy the ship ping carr ier and near est Agilen t Sales and Suppor t Office imm ediately.
3 - Installation 38 Installing the Modules Procedure 1. With the m ainfram e off, disconne ct the power cord and rem ove the top cover by loosening the screws wit h a flat- bladed screwd river. 2. Rem ove any packing material f rom inside th e mainfram e.
