Operating Instructions 25 3 Operating Instructions Introduction This section describes the operating controls and indicators, turn -on checkout procedu res, and operating procedures and considerations for the p o wer supply. Front-panel operation and remote resistance/voltage pr o gramm ing is described in this section.

Operating Instructions 27 a. Check th at the rear-panel mode sw itches are set as show n in Figu re 3-3. b. Check th at + lead is connected to +S and the – lead is con nected to –S and tighten ed securely. T he + Sense lead is connected to + Outpu t and the − sense lead is conn ected to − Output lead at the f actory.
28 Operating Instructions Initial Setup and Interconnections WA RNING: Turn off input ac po w er before changing a ny rea r-panel connection and make certain all wires and straps are properly connected and term inal block screws are securely tightened before reapplying power.

30 Operating Instructions Either positive or negative vo ltages can be ob tained from the supply by grounding one of the output terminals. It is best to avoid grou nding the output at any poi nt other th an the pow er supply output termin als to avoid n oise problem s caused by common-mode curr e nt flowing through the lo a d lead s to gro und.
Operating Instructions 31 circuits wit hin the s upply the pow er supply output drops t o zero and the UNREGUL ATED indicator tu rns on. The pow er supply can be disabled by ov ervoltage, overtem perature, or by low or high ac line (main s) voltage. Overvoltage .
32 Operating Instructions crosses the operating lo cus at point 1. P oint 1 is o n the p a rt o f the operating locus d e fined b y the voltage setting, so the pow er supply operates in CV mode. Similarly , the line representing load resistance C, the low est load resistance shown on the graph, crosses the operatin g locus at point 3.
Operating Instructions 33 Figure 3-5. Overrange O peration Constant Voltage Operation By pressing the DISPLAY SETT INGS pushbutton switch you can observe the setting (limits) of both the output voltage and the output current, rather than the actual output values.
34 Operating Instructions Constant Current Operation To set up the p ower supp ly for consta nt curre nt o per ation: a. With power supply turned off, connect the load to the output terminals. b. Turn on the power supply. Hold in DISPLAY OVP pushbutton switch and set OVP ADJUST po tentiometer for the desired OVP trip voltage.
Operating Instructions 35 Figure 3-6. Remote Voltage Sensing Because the sensing leads carry only a f ew m illiamperes, the w ires used for sensin g can be much lighter than the load leads. Each sense lead sh ould have no m ore than 0.2 ohm s resistance.
36 Operating Instructions Analog Programming These instrum ents can obtain their ou tput voltage and cu rrent program ming in formation from three distin ct sources: 1) locally from the front panel, 2) remotely from an external isolated, voltage source or, 3) remotely from an external isolated, resistance.
Operating Instructions 37 Note: If the program min g terminals (VP to P) become open ci rcuited durin g resistan ce programm ing, the output voltage will rise above the power supply rating. The supply will not be damaged if this occurs, but the overv oltage trip poi nt shou ld be properly adju sted to protect the u ser’ s load.
38 Operating Instructions Figure 3-9. Optional Voltage Divider for Program S our ce Constant Current Output, Resistance Control . The setup s hown in Fig ure 3-10 allow s the ou tput curren t to be varied by using an extern al resistor to prog ram the s upply .
Operating Instructions 39 Constant Current Output, Voltage Control . The setup sho wn in Figure 3-11 allows the output current to be varied by using an external voltage to pro gram the supply. A voltag e source variabl e from 0 t o + 5 volts produces a proport ional outpu t current f rom zero to f ull scale.

Operating Instructions 41 Caution: When two supplies are operated in series, they should be pro gramm ed to the same voltage to prevent possible d a mage to the lower voltage supp ly during short circuit co nd itions. Contact the factory if this is not poss ible.
