Getting Started w ith Y our Notebook Refe renc e G ui de 1– 5 Status Li ghts The notebook includes a number of status lights that report po wer and battery status, dri ve acti vity , and keyboard functions such as Caps Lock and Num Lock. The follo wing diagram sho ws the main status lights on the front of the notebook.

4–2 R efer ence Guide Modem and Network C onnecti ons To C o n n e c t t h e M o d e m Ä CAUTION: Y our built-in modem may not w ork w ith m ultiple phone lines or a pr iv ate br anc h ex c hange (P BX). It cannot be connected to a coin-operated telephone and does not w or k w ith party lines.
Modem and Network C onnecti ons Refe renc e G ui de 4– 3 Spec ial Restric tions in C ertain C ountries ■ Many countries impose a black out period after a modem repeatedly fails to connect to a service pro vider . The number of failed attempts and the period you must wait before trying again dif fer from country to country .
4–4 R efer ence Guide Modem and Network C onnecti ons To C h a n g e Y o u r M o d e m S e t t i n g s The modem is already set up to be compatible with telephone systems and modems in most areas. Ho we ver , in some situations, you may hav e to change modem settings to match local conditions.
Modem and Network C onnecti ons Refe renc e G ui de 4– 5 Connec tin g to a Local Area Netw ork (LAN ) Y ou can connect to local area ne tworks (LANs). LANs giv e you access to network resources, such as printers and f ile servers on your corporate network, and possibly to the Internet.
4–6 R efer ence Guide Modem and Network C onnecti ons Using a Wireless L AN Ada pter (Selec t Models O nly) Y our notebook model may include a wireless local area network (WLAN) adapter . A WLAN adapter enables your notebook to connect to a compatible wireless network access point or to another , compatible, wireless-enabled notebook.
Modem and Network C onnecti ons Refe renc e G ui de 4– 7 Mak ing Wi r ele ss Netw o r k Connec tions (Sel ect Mod els Only) If your notebook includes a wireless on-of f button, you can connect by radio to an 802.11 wireless local area netw ork (WLAN) and access computers and other resources on the network.

Add-On D e vi ces Refe renc e G ui de 5– 5 Using Dual Dis pl ay Mode Y ou can extend your desktop by connecting an e xternal monitor to your notebook. 1. Select Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Display . 2. Select the Settings tab .
5–6 R efer ence Guide Add-On D ev i ces To C o n n e c t a 1 394 D e v i c e (Selec t Models O nly) If your notebook has a 1394 port (also kno wn as FireW ire), you can use it to connect de vices such as audio and video equipment, disk dri ves, printers, and other notebooks.
Add-On D e vi ces Refe renc e G ui de 5– 7 Installin g Additional R AM (M emor y) The notebook has 2 slots that hold 2 RAM modules. At least one slot contains a RAM module installed at the factory . Y ou can use both slots to expand your RAM. T o Ins tall a RAM Expansion Modul e Use only PC2100 DDR-266-MHz or higher RAM.
5–8 R efer ence Guide Add-On D ev i ces 6. Match your notebook to the follo wing illustration. Insert the RAM board into the connector at about a 30-degree angle until it is fully inserted. Then press do wn at both sides until both latches snap closed.

Sav e your work and shut do wn the notebook. If you are not sure whether the notebook is of f or in Hibernation, briefly press the po wer button.

6–2 R efer ence Guide T r oubleshooting Audio Problems If No Sound I s Audib le ■ If your model has a volume control, press the + (plus) b utton to increase the volume. ■ Select the speaker icon on the taskbar (if present). Clear the Mute all check box if selected .
T r oubleshooting Refe renc e G ui de 6– 3 CD-ROM and D VD Pr oblems If Y ou Cannot B oot from a CD or D VD ■ Make sure the CD or D VD is bootable. ■ Make sure the CD-R OM/DVD dri ve is selected as the boot de vice. See the “Basic Operation” chapter in this guide to change the boot sequence.
6–4 R efer ence Guide T r oubleshooting If th e Notebook Cann ot Read a CD or D VD ■ For a single-sided CD or D VD, make sure the disc is placed in the dri ve with the label f acing up. ■ Clean the disc. ■ W ait 5 to 10 seconds after closing the tray to give the notebook time to recognize the disc.
T r oubleshooting Refe renc e G ui de 6– 5 If an External Disp lay Does Not W ork ■ Check the connections. ■ The external monitor may not be detected. In the BIOS Setup utility , try setting V ideo Display Device to Both in the System De vices menu.
6–6 R efer ence Guide T r oubleshooting If Files Are Corrupted ■ Open My Computer , and the disk you w ant to scan. Select File > Properties. Select the Check No w box under the Error-checking section of the T ools tab . ■ Run the virus-scanning program.

T r oubleshooting Refe renc e G ui de 6– 9 Memory Proble ms If a Messa ge Reports Tha t Y ou Are Out of M emory ■ Make sure dri ve C is not running lo w on free space. ■ If you are having memory prob lems while running MS-DOS programs, select Start > Help and Support.
6–10 Re fer ence Gui de T r oubleshooting Modem Problems If th e Modem Seems Slow ■ Excess static or noise on a line reduces the ov erall transmission speed of the modem connection. If necessary , contact your telephone company about f ixing this type of problem.
T r oubleshooting Re fer ence Guide 6–11 If th e Modem Dials In correctly ■ Check the telephone number you entered, including any digits required for outside access or long distance. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options. Check the dialing options—look for duplicate digits for outside access or long distance.

If it is on, press the audio mute button. ■ Check the speaker v olume setting. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options, then select the modem and select Properties.

6–14 Re fer ence Gui de T r oubleshooting If a PC Card Modem I s Not W orking Disable the internal modem: 1. Open the hardware De vice Ma nager . Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System. 2. Select Modem to list the current modem de vices.
T r oubleshooting Re fer ence Guide 6–15 If th e Notebook Stops Responding ■ Press ctrl+alt+del and use T ask Manager to end the application that is not responding. ■ Press the po wer button for at le ast 4 seconds to turn of f and reset the notebook.
6–16 Re fer ence Gui de T r oubleshooting ■ Make sure you are using only the A C adapter included with your notebook (or other approv ed adapter that meets the po wer requirements of the notebook). Do not use a 60-watt, 3.16-amp adapter . ■ Mov e the notebook aw ay from an y nearby heat source.
T r oubleshooting Re fer ence Guide 6–17 If th e Notebook Does Not Enter Standby Mode as Expected ■ If you hav e a connection to another computer , the notebook will not enter Standby if the connection is acti v e. ■ If the notebook is performing an operation, it normally waits for the operation to finish before going into Standb y .
