9 War n in g T o avoid electric shock, do no t connect safety extra-low voltage (SEL V) circuits to telephone-network volta ge (TNV) circuits. LAN ports contain SE L V c ircuits, and W AN ports contain TNV circuits. Some LAN and W AN ports both use RJ-45 connector s.

12 Installing on Desktop Caution If you place the Cisco router on a desktop, do not place anything that w eighs more than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) on top of the chassis. Grounding the Chassis Y ou must connect the chassis to a reliable earth ground; the g round wire must be installed in accordance with local electrical safety standards.

14 Caution If you connect dual DC power sources, both sources must be the same polarity . Do not connect a –DC with a +DC source to a Cisco 2691 router . Opposite-polarity sources dama ge the power supply . DC Wiring Requirements A Cisco 2691 router with a DC-input power supply requires co pper wire for the pow er connect ions.
15 War n in g The illustration shows the DC po wer supply terminal block. Wire the DC power supply as illustrated. The proper wiring sequence is ground to grou nd, positive to positive, an d neg ative to negative. The ground wire shou ld alway s be connected first and di sconnected last.

17 5 Power Up the Router Checklist for Power-Up Y ou are ready to power up the Cisco router after the following steps are completed: • Chassis is securely mounted and grounded. • Power and interface ca ble s are connected. • Y our PC terminal emulation program is configured for 9600 baud, 8 data b its, 1 stop bit, and no parity .
18 Y ou may see different startup messages: • If you see the following messa ges, the router has booted with a configuration file and is ready for initial configuration using the Cisco Router and Securi ty Device Mana ger (SDM): yourname con0 is now available Press RETURN to get started.
