6 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION Select a dry location for the t ele- phone’s bas e that is: • Near an AC outlet • Near a telephone line jack • O ut of th e way of norm al act ivit ies .
7 CONNECTING THE BATTERY Imp ort an t: You mu st connect th e bat- tery inside the han dset b efore charg- ing the phone and us ing it. Follow these steps to connect the battery. 1. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw on the battery compa rtment cover on the bac k of th e handset, then press down on the c over and slide it off.
8 CHARGING T HE BATTERY After you i nstall a ne w b attery, place the handset on the base and let the battery charge for about 15 hours be- fore you use it the first t ime. T he IN USE/CHARGE indicator l ights. The pho ne recharges w henev er the handset i s on the base.
9 SETTI NG T HE DIALING MO DE Set T ONE/PULSE on the back of the base for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which t ype you have, do this t est. 1. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE . 2. Lift t he hands et, press TA L K , and listen for a d ial tone.
10 OPE RATION MAKING/AN SWERING A CALL You can use your cordless telephone at the base or away f rom the base. Using the Handset at th e Base You can use the handset at t he base like a reg ular corde d telephone. Just place th e ha ndset on the b ase.
11 CHANGING CH ANNELS Your ET-542’s au to-scan feat ure auto- matically selects a c lear channel when you pick up t he phone. If you experi- ence interferenc e during a cal l, press CH t o s wi tch to another c han nel (25 in all) until you receive be tter recep tion.
12 USING T ONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as ba nk by phone, require t one signals. If you have pulse service, you can still use the se s pec ial ton e s erv ices by follo w - ing th ese steps . 1. Set TONE/PULSE on the b ase to PULSE .
13 Storin g a Number in Memor y 1. Press MEMORY . Note: Wh ile you are storing a number in memory , if you do not press any button on the keypad within about 10 s econd s, a buzz sounds. Y ou m ust s tart the p ro- cess over from the beginning. 2. Dial the phone num ber you want t o st or e.

18 REPLACING THE BATTERY If you follow the inst ructions in “Cha rg- ing the Battery, ” the supplied ba ttery should last abo ut a year. Whe n the battery loses its ability to fully ch arge, order a 3.6-volt, 300-mAH bat tery w ith a connector that f i ts the socke t i n the battery co mpartm ent.
