1.4 Before you proceed T ake note of the following precautions before you install motherboard components or change any motherboard settings. • Unplug the power cord from the wall socket before touching any component.
M5A78L-M/USB3 1.5 Motherboard overview 1.5.1 Placement direction When installing the motherboard, ensure that you place it into the chassis in the correct orientation. The edge with external ports goes to the rear part of the chassis as indicated in the image below .

1.6 Central Processing Unit (CPU) This motherboard comes with an AM3+ socket designed for FX™ / Phenom™ II / Athlon™ II / Sempron™ 100 series processors. 1.6.1 Installing the CPU T o install a CPU: 1. Locate the CPU socket on the motherboard. The AM3+ socket has a different pinout from the AM2+/AM2 socket.
5. When the CPU is in place, push down the socket lever to secure the CPU. The lever clicks on the side tab to indicate that it is locked. 6. Install a CPU heatsink and fan following the instructions that comes with the heatsink package. Y ou can also refer to section 1.
1.6.2 Installing the heatsink and fan Ensure that you use only AMD-certied heatsink and fan assembly . T o install the CPU heatsink and fan: 1. Place the heatsink on top of the installed CPU, ensuring that the heatsink ts properly on the retention module base.
3. Align the other end of the retention bracket to the retention module base. A clicking sound denotes that the retention bracket is in place. Ensure that the fan and heatsink assembly perfectly ts the retention mechanism module base, otherwise you cannot snap the retention bracket in place.
1.7.2 Memory congurations Y ou may install 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB unbuffered ECC and non-ECC DDR3 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets. • Y ou may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dual-channel conguration.

1.7.3 Installing a DIMM Unplug the power supply before adding or removing DIMMs or other system components. Failure to do so can cause severe damage to both the motherboard and the components. 1. Press the retaining clips outward to unlock a DIMM socket.
1.8 Expansion slots In the future, you may need to install expansion cards. The following sub-sections describe the slots and the expansion cards that they support. Unplug the power cord before adding or removing expansion cards. Failure to do so may cause you physical injury and damage motherboard components.
1.9 Jumpers 1. Clear RTC RAM (CLRTC) This jumper allows you to clear the Real T ime Clock (RTC) RAM in CMOS. Y ou can clear the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameters by erasing the CMOS RTC RAM data. The onboard button cell battery powers the RAM data in CMOS, which include system setup information such as system passwords.
1.10 Connectors 1.10.1 Rear panel ports 1. PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse combo port. This port is for a PS/2 keyboard/mouse. 2 . Optical S/PDIF Out port. This port connects an external audio output device via an optical S/PDIF cable. 3. Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) port.
1 1. USB 2.0 ports 1 and 2. These two 4-pin Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports connect to USB 2.0 devices. 12. USB 3.0 ports 3 and 4. These two 9-pin Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports are available for connecting USB 3.0/2.0 devices. • DO NOT connect a keyboard / mouse to any USB 3.
• We recommend that you connect a high-denition front panel audio module to this connector to avail of the motherboard high-denition audio capability . • If you want to connect a high denition front panel audio module to this connector , set the Front Panel Select item in the BIOS to [HD Audio] .
3. A TX power connectors (24-pin EA TXPWR, 4-pin A TX12V) These connectors are for an A TX power supply . The plugs from the power supply are designed to t these connectors in only one orientation. Find the proper orientation and push down rmly until the connectors completely t.
4. Serial A T A connectors (7-pin SA T A3G_1~6) These connectors are for the Serial A T A signal cables for Serial A T A 3Gb/s hard disk and optical disk drives.
5. System panel connector (20-8 pin P ANEL) This connector supports several chassis-mounted functions. • System power LED (2-pin PLED) This 2-pin connector is for the system power LED.
6. USB connectors (10-1 pin USB78, USB910, USB1 1 12) These connectors are for USB 2.0 ports. Connect the USB module cable to any of these connectors, then install the module to a slot opening at the back of the system chassis. These USB connectors comply with USB 2.
8. CPU and chassis fan connectors (4-pin CPU_F AN and 3-pin CHA_F AN) Conn ect the fan cab les to the fan con nect ors on t he moth erbo ard, ensu ring th at t he blac k w ire of e ach cab le m atch es t he grou nd p in o f t he c onne ctor . Only the 4-pin CPU fan supports the ASUS Q-Fan feature.

2-6 Chapter 2: BIOS information 2.2.4 Menu items The highlighted item on the menu bar displays the specic items for that menu. For example, selecting Main shows the Main menu items. The other items (Advanced, Power , Boot, T ools, and Exit) on the menu bar have their respective menu items.
ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 2-7 2.3 Main menu When you enter the BIOS Setup program, the Main menu screen appears, giving you an overview of the basic system information. Refer to section 2.2.1 BIOS menu screen for information on the menu screen items and how to navigate through them.
2-8 Chapter 2: BIOS information LBA/Large Mode [Auto] Enables or disables the LBA mode. Setting this item to [Auto] enables the LBA mode if the device supports this mode, and if the device was not previously formatted with LBA mode disabled.

T ake caution when changing the settings of the Advanced menu items. Incorrect eld values can cause the system to malfunction.

ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 2-17 2.5 Power menu The Power menu items allow you to change the settings for the Advanced Conguration and Power Interface (ACPI) and the Advanced Power Management (APM). Select an item then press <Enter> to display the conguration options.

Conguration options: [Disabled] [Space Bar] [Power Key] [Ctrl-Esc] Power On By PS/2 Mouse [Disabled] When set to [Enabled], this parameter allows you to use the PS/2 mouse to turn on the system.
