5 PREP ARA TION You can power yo ur SCP-98 from any of three power sources: • Inter nal batter y power • Standard AC po wer (with an optional A C ada pter) • V ehicle batter y power (with an optional DC adapter) Note : Connecting a n adapter di sconnects interna l batteries.
6 2. Put the batteries into th e compar tment as indicated by the polar ity symbols (+ and – ) marked inside, with th e back battery over the attached ribbon. 12:00 AM appears. Cautions : • Use only fresh batteri es of the required size and rec- ommended type.

8 Follow these steps to powe r the SCP-98 from a standard AC outlet. 1. Set the A C adapter’ s voltage s witch to 3V . 2. Put the adapter’ s 3.4 mm outer diameter/1.3 mm inner diameter barrel plug onto the a dapter cord’ s small end so it reads TIP–.
9 Cautions : • The recommended DC adapters sup ply 3 volts and deliver at least 300 milliamps. Their center tips are set to negative , and the ir p lugs correctl y fit the SC P-9 8’ s DC 3V jack. Using a DC adapter that does not meet these spec- ifications could damage the SCP-9 8 or the adapter .
10 2. Put the 3.4 mm oute r diamet er/1.3 mm inn er diamete r barrel plug onto the adapter cord’ s smaller end so it reads TIP–. 3. Inser t the barrel plug in to the SCP-98’ s DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the DC adapter’ s other end into the vehicle’ s ciga- rette-lighter sock et.
11 Listening Safel y To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you u se headphones. • Set the v olume to the lo west setting bef ore putting on th e headphones. After you put on the headphones, adjust the volume to a comfor table le v el.
12 SETTING THE CLOCK 1. Set STEREO/MONO/T APE to TA P E . The display sho ws the currently set time. Note : Y ou can set the clock only when the radio is off . 2. Press MODE twice . The time flashes. Note : If you do not press ∨ / HOUR or ∧ / MINUTE within 10 seconds, the currently set time stops flashing and y ou must pr ess MODE twice a gain.
13 3. Repeatedly press ∨ / HOUR until the display sho w s the correct hour . (T o rapidly advance the hours , hold down down ∨ / HOUR .) 4. Repeatedly press ∧ / MINUTE until the display shows the correct minute. (T o rapidly advance the minutes, hold down do wn ∧ / MINUTE .
14 SETTING THE 10KHZ/9KHZ SWITCH The 10kHz/9kHz switch on the back of the cassette compart- ment door is preset to 10kHz . At this setting, the SCP-98 dis- plays the time in the 12-ho ur format and tunes fre quencies in increments of 10 kHz (AM) and 0.
15 USING THE BEL T CLIP To attach the supplied belt clip to the SCP-98, press the clip’s three latches into the correspondi ng slots on the back of the SCP-98.
16 OPERA TION USING THE RADIO Listening to the Radio Make sure that you have headphones or speakers conn ected to the SCP-98. Note : To protect your hearing, set – VO L U M E + to its lowest setting before you turn on the radio. 1. T o tur n on the radi o , set STEREO/MONO/T APE to STEREO f or stereo sound on FM stations.
17 3. Press AM/FM so the display sho ws the desired band ( AM or FM ). 4. T une to the desire d station. Manual Tuning : Repeatedly press ∨ / HOUR or ∧ / MINUTE to tune up or down the se lected band. T o tune the band more quickly , hold down down ∨ / HOUR or ∧ / MINUTE .
18 Notes : • The SCP-98 has a built-in AM antenna, and the head- phones’ or speakers’ cord ser ves as an FM antenna. F or the best AM reception, rotate the SCP-98. F or the best FM reception, fully uncoil the hea dphones’ or speakers’ cord. • If FM stereo reception is p oor or noisy , set STEREO/ MONO/T APE to MONO .
19 3. T une to th e first station you want to store . The display shows the selected frequency . 4. Press ST ORE . M flashes on the display . 5. T o store stations into memor y locations 1–5, while M flashes on the display , press a memor y location button ( 1 – 5 ) to store the current frequency into that memor y location.
20 F or e xample , if y ou press +5 then memor y location button 2 , the radio stores the frequency you selected into mem- or y location 7. Note : If you do not press a memor y location button or +5 within about 10 seconds, M disappears from the displ a y .
21 USING THE CASSETTE PLA YER Make sure that you have headphones or speakers connecte d to the SCP-98. See “Con necting Headphones/Speakers” on Page 10.
22 Notes : • T o protect your hearing, set –V OLUME + to its lowest set- ting before y ou play a cassette tape. • F or the best performance, use only regular length (60- or 90-minute) cassette tapes.
23 3. T ake up any slac k in th e cassette tape by turning its hu b with your finger or a pencil. Cautions : • If y ou do not remov e excess slac k, the tape might become ta n gle d in the pla y mechanism.
24 7. Adjust – V OLUME + to a comf or table listening le v el. 8. Set E-BASS IN/OUT to IN f or e xtra bass eff ect, or to OUT to leav e the bass sou nd unchanged. 9. T o f ast-forw a rd the tape, press . locks and the tape fast-f orwards until it reaches the end of the tape or you press or .
25 Setting the Alarm Time 1. Set STEREO/MONO/T APE to TA P E . The display sho ws the currently set time. 2. Press MODE once. AL (alarm) appears an d the currently set alarm time flas hes. Note : If y ou do not press ∨ / HOU R or ∧ / MINUTE within 10 seconds, AL and the currently set alar m time disappear from the displa y .
26 4. Repeatedly press ∧ / MINUTE until the displa y sho ws the correct minute. T o rapidly advance the minutes, hold down ∧ / MINUTE . 5. When the display shows the correct alarm time, either : • Press MODE.
27 LOC KING THE SCP-98 You can lock the SCP-98 to preve nt accidentally changing th e station you are listening to , replacing a stored station, or set- ting the time or a larm. When your settings are locked, LOCK appears on the display and you cannot adjust the tu ner or set the clock or the al arm.
28 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Your Optimus SCP-98 AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player is an example of superior design and craftsmanship . The followin g suggestions will help you care for the SCP-98 so you can en- joy it for years. Keep the SCP-98 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry im- mediately.
29 RESTORING T APE T ENSION AND SOUND QUALITY After you play a cassette several times, the tape might be- come tightly wound on the reels. This can cause playback sound quality to deteriorate . To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from th e beginning to the end of one side, then turn the tape over and fast-forward to the end again.
30 4. Use a cotton sw ab dipped in denatured alcohol or tape head cleaning solution to clean the play head, pinch roller , tape guides, and capstan. Note : Y our loca l RadioShack store has a complete line of cassette dec k cleaning supplies . 5. When you finish cleaning, press and close the cas- sette compar tment door .
